I never realized just how ambitious Batman & Robin was! I only ever heard all the bad things and seen only bits of gameplay here and there. It actually does make me wonder what it would have been like if it came out a generation later with more time and better tech.
Fun Fact: The basically fully finished ISO of the canceled Superman PS1 game leaked about a year or two ago, supposedly by the same guy who snapped the disc. He took it down shortly after, but people were quick to grab and mirror it everywhere. So it's out there now.
Nice video! I remember I rented Batman & Robin as a kid. It was so hard to control, which made the game way too difficult. I remember being disappointed by it back then. Still, looking back on the game now, it was impressively ambitious for the time. I often wish I could mod some PS1/PS2 era games and tweak them so that they play better.
I remember reading about that Batman & Robin game as a teen and it seemed fascinating to me. Thing is… I’d already grown distrustful of tie in games from my time spent with the Genesis/SNES. Looks like I made the right decision passing it up.
Your channel is awesome, it is great to see so much quality content about the massive library of the PS1. If I may give you an idea, you know what would be really cool to see? You ranking the "retro revivals" that were released on PS1. PacMan, Galaga, Q*Bert, Break Out, Pitfall, Xevious, Centipede, Asteroids, even Pong, all of these and maybe even more 80s games had "modern" polygonal versions on the original PlayStation. And I imagine it wouldn't take much of your time to play each one, as most retain the score-based pick up and play nature of the original arcades. I don know, I think it is a neat idea.
its really amusing how all 4 of these batman games manage to be so awful in such unique ways from one another, some are too ambitious and don't work at all and others lack ambition entirely
I have fond childhood memories of some of these games on demo disk, and seeing them now has brought a painful realisation to me! I had horrible taste as a child for video games! Fantastic video by the way!
What's interesting about Batman Forever is that it's a ST-V arcade board game, which means is a Saturn game ported to the PS1, that's why it took a hit when porting it, the Saturn has a lot of sub-par ports from the PS, so maybe this serves as a counter-punch somehow? Developers could have done a better job but something about ports almost always feel wrong in the result, Grandia is yet another example the Saturn is better even then the "HD Remasters", based on the PS port, for some weird reason.
The other levels of the Superman ps1 unreleased game were also released online. Not just the Mines level... A fight with Mr. Mxyzsptlk, daily planet offices, A subway fight level with Parasite, Parking Garages, Braniac's ship, the fuel station etc...
This and the 6th gen was a real low point for DC games; pretty difficult to find a good game compared to the 8 and 16-bit days, and the more modern efforts like the Arkham trio. The same can kind of be said about their live-action films during the last decade. I will say I generally prefer DC over Marvel when it came to cartoons. DC and Warner Bros. go together like bread and butter and have created some of the most entertaining television animation I've seen. Whether it's the classic 'Batman: The Animated Series', or the modern laugh riots of 'Teen Titans Go!' and 'DC Super Hero Girls'. Marvel probably has more variety, but I generally only cared about Spider-Man and nothing else. Also, the DC Super Hero Girls Nintendo Switch game is a blast. A ridiculous amount of content for a licensed game aimed at children.
A good superman game seems so diifficult to do because of being almost invincible so either he feels OP to someone who doesnt know the lore or too weak. It is possible but we need a dev passionate about the source material and knows their stuff
Bat and Robin, I can see that getting remake just using Batman Arkham engine and gameplay. Or a fan remake try to improve it and make it less janky. Batman Beyond... maybe could been better with an upgrade system and replay level select? gain exp for new combos and upgrades for max health and gadgets damage and speed stats. it be something to do in the game. The Batman "racing game" yeah that one I wonder why that didn't had modified system for the cars and weapons. upgrade the steering, the boost, and armor something like gran turismo or even something basic like R.C. Pro-Am or Rock n' Roll Racing. ps1 Superman hope that one get a finalize fan patch.
Looking back, outside of the odd game or two, for years it was a grim time to be a DC fan when it came to consoles. Marvel games were a better bet in my experience.
Poor Batsy, his games were so bad you'd think Joker made them! I briefly played Batman Beyond, and can concur it is absolute crap. I got bored into level 3
Interested in playing the psx Superman full version. I was given Superman 64 for my 12th birthday and… yeah. Though it’s far from the worst game I’ve played. That title goes Last Action Hero on the Genesis.
(- Second Comment -) Okay, I have to ask something. I'm interested in trying out the Batman & Robin game, but looking it up reveals how expensive a full copy of it is (£40). Speaking as someone who has completed Bubsy 3D seven times, I still haven't forgotten my jaw-dropping expression over first playing it and experiencing the uncomfortable and restrictive quirks of its play control. Even now, it's still hard to control. So does Batman & Robin, by any chance, somehow feel worse to play than not just Bubsy 3D, but also games I've played with worse control like the PS1 Sabrina game? If it does, then that's a game I'm not motivated to burn £40 just to try it.
It's been quite a while since I've played B&R but it did stand out as one of the worse controlling games I've played on the console. Stiff, unresponsive and floaty mixed in with incredibly tight and restrictive camera angles made for a rough experience. It's a fascinating game, but not one I'd be keen dropping 40 quid on personally. Maybe give it a spin in an emulator first to judge for yourself!
Ok ....i get that the batman beyond game (or batman of the future as i knew it as) is probably bad ...but i think the lack of multiplayer is the least of its problems I mean ...its batman beyond .....who would a second player play as? ...i mean its been a while since i watched it but last i chacked the show only really has batman
Superman Returns: The Game was alright. PS3? 300ft Metallo voiced by Malcom McDowell, 80 sq Km of Metropolis... NO RINGS... saving 100 cats, start fires then put them out... did I mention NO fkn RINGS?
Thanks for checking out the video!
Do you agree/disagree with my ranking?
Let me know your favourite/least favourite DC PS1 game in the comments.
Batman Beyond definitely seems to be the worst, but none of them look to be particularly very good!
I never realized just how ambitious Batman & Robin was! I only ever heard all the bad things and seen only bits of gameplay here and there. It actually does make me wonder what it would have been like if it came out a generation later with more time and better tech.

Bloody hell. I've been actively searching for a channel like yours for about a year now. Thank you, RUclips, for no longer hiding it.
At the beginning of this video I was like "if he includes Superman on PS1 this dude knows it all", you did. Beautiful
Couldnt let Batman hog all the screen time 😅
Thanks for watching! :)

11:07 I sometimes hear mentions of the bat credit card, but nobody ever mentioned it's from a company called "Goth Card" apparently.
They do live in Gotham City...
Oof... Really interested in knowing what the "updated" Superman would have been like, I had no idea that had ever almost happened!
Great video, very informative 👍
I remember reading about that Batman & Robin game as a teen and it seemed fascinating to me. Thing is… I’d already grown distrustful of tie in games from my time spent with the Genesis/SNES. Looks like I made the right decision passing it up.
batman & robin looked amazing back then. this and urban chaos were the two open world games before gta 3 that nobody remembers

Great idea, I'll store it away in the potential video folder! Thank you :)
Batman & Robin living up to the Movie!
In the top 3 once again! Great to see!
We putting respect on its name
You could say that “Batman Forever: The Arcade Game” was the... “Best Of The Worst”!
OH MY GAAAAAAAAAAAHD

Thanks for the kind words :)

That version was dumped after this video was made, so if I ever get a chance to talk about unreleased games and prototypes I'll bring it up again.
Batman Arcade seems to be one of the better beat em ups on the PS1, in a manic, trippy way.
Its a trip alright, wacky and just competent enough to be a fun time.
Seán, ye feckin' legend ye. Fair play. This looks good
I've still got a lot to learn but I'm having a good time doing it.
Thanks for watching man, appreciate it!

This is one of the best retro gaming channels I've discovered recently. You deserve more subscribers 👍
Appreciate the kind words, thank you!
You got good tastes.
You should do 'Every Japan-Exclusive Panchinco PS1 Game Ranked & Reviewed'
It would be 12 hours 😅
This brought back some memories! Some of them were in very low graphics lol
Yeah, we've made quite the jump in graphics from the '90s haven't we!
Thanks so much for checking out the video.

Which has worse controls? This game or spawn the eternal?
I've yet to play Spawn the eternal, but I've heard legends about its bad controls.
Definitely seems like they're both on par with each other :P
Looking back, outside of the odd game or two, for years it was a grim time to be a DC fan when it came to consoles. Marvel games were a better bet in my experience.

I think that whole era was rough for Batman and DC games in general. Cant think of a single good game off the top of my head!

@@SeanSeanson I had no idea! Going to add to steam deck now!

I liked flying around in it, so that alone makes it a top tier superman game!
5th gen was the experiential phase for gen 6th...........The best 5th Gen games were ironically 2D titles.
Batman & Robin looked so good, I was about to get it... Then you said it was trash 😂
Batman Forever looks like it would give me a seizure.
*skips straight to Gotham City racer before watching the rest*
Oh...
Damn that looks horrendous
This is the exact range of emotions I went through when starting the game.
@@SeanSeanson my dissapointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
@@SeanSeanson the first game looks kinda fun tho, if it was in token I'd play the shit out of it
in ps1, Marvel >>>>>>>> DC
Shame Batman & Robin plays so poorly as it LOOKS great
I'm sorry but I have taken this too seriously
That's OK! Just don't hunt me down for my bad takes 😅
just admit it , batman and robin is WORSE than superman 64!
is 64 is a bad game, batman and robin is a rageware
