Possible Corruption in HVAC Industry?

  • I know I may be opening a can of worms here but this information is intriguing enough for me to go ahead and share it anyway. I am sure that presently most HVAC manufacturers have little to do with corruption but because of the huge push for high efficiency units the chances of shady stuff happening skyrocketed! It never dawned on me like this before that anything with a programmed circuit board can be programmed to fail at a certain time. And if we add in wi-fi on top of this, that makes things even more hairy since now "remote failure" can be an option. I can totally see how some companies may be tempted to try something like that. Do we have too many ECM motors in stock? No problem. Let's orchestrate a scenario where we all the sudden get a lot of motor orders...

as a mechanical engineer in the HVAC industry, I can assure you that the components are engineered to last up to a point. How else do these corporations continue to be in business? Big corporations dictate the design malfunction after such a time, e.g. up to warranty period. I have said this to many techs and homeowners and they look at me as if I were a conspiracy theorist. But we design products to stop working, unlike the units from the 60s and 70s. You'd be lucky to get 10-12 years on a new AC system. Thanks for sharing!

My 21 years old Whirlpool dryer stopped working for the first time last Saturday. Watched a couple You Tupe clips to see how to open the font of the dryer. I opened it and found the belt for the drum broke. It was an easy fix. I got it back working now.

Ha. Before you mentioned it, I was going to say I’ll take my 12 year old mechanical speed queen washer dryer setup any day. Purely mechanical. I’ve replaced a couple of switches but that’s really it. That’s why I’m trying my hardest to keep my two Armstrong air R22 units original to my house (1989) running. I even got a universal 608 certification so I don’t have to worry about anyone else working on them. And let’s not forget my also original peerless oil fired boiler from 89 as well. Purely mechanical and I service that thing myself. I owe it all to channels like yours- sharing your knowledge. It’s more helpful than you know! Thanks again.

VW was caught several years ago in their emissions scandal.
The engines would bypass all exhaust standards until hooked up to a testing machine.
Car would recognize it was being tested and switch over to meep EPA guidelines then go back to polluting after testing equipment was removed.
Same can happen with anything with a circuit board 😮

I have 14 and 16 SEER Carrier's builder grades in a 4 year old house. Pistons no TXV's. After 1.5 years the 16 SEER's ECM went out. It was under warranty but the labor was more than I can buy a rescue motor so I did that myself. The module was more than a motor. I also put louvered panels on my A/C closet doors for more return air.
The other night at 2am the cap went in the 14 SEER. Replaced it with an Amrad. Next night it was the fan motor. Nobody local had a 1/12 HP. I had one next day air. While in there I replaced the working contactor being it's 4 years old. I also cleaned the coil with Viper Venom while the top was off. I already replaced the cap in the other unit. The 14 SEER has a Broad Ocean ECM blower motor. I don't believe there is a rescue for that one. That motor is over $500. If I couldn't work on my own equipment my bills would be in the thousands.

When I signed the contract (2002) for my new tract home (ranch 2240sqft). I didn’t buy central A/C, but got the specs what they would install. Cost for the A/C was $3500. With the furnace standard was a Trane 100k unit, 80%, optional was a 90%+ for $1500. I opted for the standard 80%. Once the home was built, I bought and installed a 3 ton A/C, with a packaged 3 1/2 ton (42,000 BTU) A coil, with one of my friends that had a license. Total cost for the A/C was $750 and $75 for electrical box, mounting kit, etc. total was $850. Took about 10 hours labor. Today both the furnace and A/C are operating with no problems. Neither have been repaired, but I have looked at them occasionally. I have purchased a capacitor ($10) and a contactor ($4) for the A/C condenser, just in case. I have also purchased an igniter ($15) for the furnace, just in case. I have installed an electronic air cleaner ($350) on the return line after the normal filter. Also installed humidifier (Aprilaire, $120) 🎉and UV filter ($35). Nest thermostat ($75) controls all.
PS: Comment on the Carrier units…..would never buy them, too many problems. Check some of the furnace and A/C reviews and you’ll see what I mean. Thanks!

  • @highwind8124

The problem with planning to have your ECM fail is that when the homeowner replaces the furnace, they'll go with a different name brand.
It's better business-wise to have your motor never fail, because then the homeowner will want the same name brand A/C or heat pump or water heater or whatever.
Carrier's old heat exchanger issue is partially why I don't prefer to install them. Failure can't be good long term.

There was a company called Consolidated Vacuum Corp, CVC, that made ion discharge tubes, to measure vacuum. Those tubes came with two filaments. Two for start up and one for running. One filament was lifetime warranty and one with two year warranty. So once it was running it was ok, but if the starter filament fails they would need to replace the tube.

I just recently sold my last laundromat having been in the business for over 30 years. I can tell you that there are washing machine computer boards out there now that don’t last 2 years. The manufacturer puts a silicone gel over all the components so you can NOT change them out. You have to buy a new board for $200-$280. Some commercial dryer boards can go up to $800. The world has become a replacement society instead of a repairable one. SAD!!!

Lennox needs monitored by the government for price gouging. Prices on some of their parts more than doubled recently and it's not COVID related. Raising prices is understandable but only so much. $3700 for a heat exchanger for a 100kbtu furnace is more than their furnace. That's nuts!

Had this not happened to me, I would not bother commenting. I have two systems that may or may or may not be the brand of topic here ;-) . I had one Motor go out and Fortunately, when my HVAC guy spoke with the warranty rep, they decided to honor warranty because it was within a day or two from having expired. Fast forward a three to four weeks later and the next one goes out. No luck the second time. This is what i experienced so take it with a grain of salt. I have not technical data only the "suspiciously coincidental timing" of the break downs. My HVAC guy also said i should go with non-variable speed motors because they have less problems. Hope than helps some of you out there.

After 35 years, the evaporator coil finally quit. Otherwise my old school single stage AC system was incredibly reliable. When I decided to replace the entire system, I knew any new system will not last 10 years. It's all part of the trend of dumbing down and designing unreliable garbage on the cheap. That's why I stayed with the least amount of "smarts" or advanced technologies. Especially in the age of preprogrammed obsolescence.

  • @loubydal7812
    @loubydal7812 2 месяца назад +2

Not so much coincidence, it's all planned obsolescence. Companies don't want to make things too perfect to make bigger money selling the full appliance, same pushing to buy new cars, electronics and many more stuff. Companies don't have so much interest to repair, little money to make.

I worked in heavy equipment shop years ago (1990s) and their fleet of Ford work trucks continually needed the same parts replaced within a year because they were worn out or failed, mostly suspension and engine and it didn't matter if it was a 150F or a 450F, diesel or gas. Its nothing really new. It's been done for years, it's just that manufactures are getting better at designing a certain life span into their products. They can only go so far because of " implied warranty of merchantability". This means goods sold will do what they are supposed to do and that there is nothing significantly wrong with them for a period of time.

NOTHING is designed to last forever because the manufacturing cost would be extremely high. Anyone who did design their products to last forever would soon go out of business. What I find more important is how the length of manufacturer warranties is shrinking. Short warranties and excessive repair costs drive people to spend way too much on so-called extended warranties (service contracts), or to just replace the product often.

Hey, do you have a video of how to diagnose the problem when the condenser unit isn't getting any power to the contactor? I searched your channel but perhaps I didn't search the right thing. The switch thing in the box (can't remember what it is called) was in, and the breakers were on. But it wasn't coming on, even when I manually turned the fan blade. Previous test showed the capacitor was bad, so I replaced it, and now it test good. Then I did a test that showed the contactor wasn't working right, so I replaced that too. At that time my multimeter was reading 240 coming to the unit so it was getting power, as well as the 24 volts from the thermostat, it just wasn't going out the other side of the contactor when the plunger pulled in. After replacing the contactor now there is no power going to the contactor. In stead of 240 volts (I think it is) my multimeter says 0 volts. I even tried pulling that switch in the box and putting it back in, as well as flipping the breakers off and back on. Still no power going to the Condenser unit. Do you have a video to diagnose this?

I own a Carrier heat pump with a gas furnace backup. The setup is 17 years old and I'm the 2nd owner. I recently had the ECM blower motor in the furnace quit. I paid $800 for a replacement from an online wholesaler- saving retail markup of $400 and labor. While changing the motors, I noticed that the old one had a label that indicated that it was not a factory part. This tells me that this furnace will have the third motor in 17 years. Hmm. After replacing the motor, I found out there may have been a cheap fix. Sure enough, a thermistor in these motors fails and costs $5 to purchase mail order. I did buy a new one and soldered it in. Blamo! Now I've got a replacement for the next time. I wish I knew of the fix at the time I paid $800 for the new motor. Great content here, thanks.

The parts are sourced from numerous subs in several or more countries. I wonder if they even make the nameplates (probably not!). My ECM went after four years, replaced under warranty ( labor not included). They even make the ECM module so you can’t replace the thermistor without a ton of effort. So much for a sustainable society. Even the EVs are starting to hit the scrap yards.

Not in the business, but the DC fan motors are usually pretty indestructible. They do make an aftermarket surge protection “connector module” for the ECM but the reviews seem mixed.
