I feel the same as you Kim, I just retired from the medical world and I printed photos and put on hothead walls of my exam rooms. If a patient really liked one of my photos and wanted to buy one I would just give it to them frame and all. I made a lot of sick patients feel better through my photography. Love your channel.

What a nice thing to do, I bet it lifted their spirits too.
I've been having a lot of hospital visits for cancer treatment, and some of the photography that is on the walls in The Christie are very good at lifting my spirit while sat waiting and walking through the corridors.
Sadly not everyone seems to notice them, but then again if they aren't feeling to good that day it is understandable.

Having a camera is a bit like having a dog - it makes you go for a walk and exercise, explore places, it's the motivation to go and be part of the world around you. I take about 250 photos for every one I actually use. Like you say it connects you to nature, and I'm right with you there!

I am one of those with 1000’s of photos on hard drives. I share them on Flickr mostly. I find it great that I can show people my part of the world as others show theirs. That’s what I enjoy the most about your videos/photos I can visit your area of the world from the convenience of my phone/tablet/computer without flying there….can’t afford to travel the world. So just seeing your photos and videos they have all but one thing….smell. I feel like I am there…and that’s good. I agree totally there is joy in just getting out and taking a picture of a moment in time. You’re philosophy is spot on! Fred in Texas

As others will also say, I don't photographs, I take memories. I am 76 now, and after a lifetime of travel I often just look at some pics randomly, and remember the times my wife, family and myself had. My wife and I have frequently just sat and chatted for long periods recounting the memories inspired by some old pictures.. Fabulous!

A similar subject came up with Allister Ben the other day. I explained that I took images because of the moment, just like you. I keep the images as a record like footprints through my life's journey. Someday I will not be able to go out and I'll have all these images. When I look at them I'll feel transported back to that moment. If someone asks I can tell them all about the evening or morning andcthe location. I might recall a funny story about how I got there or relay a historical event that also happened then. The image becomes a trigger for our mind. It's our image. It's not in a portfolio but it means and feels a lot to us.
Alistair Ben and others are lucky to have a body of top knotch work that they can write and print books. Most of us will just tell stories of our lives. Where when and how each image came about. The drives become a record of us. Our journey. Our footprints in the sands of time. At the end of our life we can hope someone will care for the drives but more than likely our story will fade away in a landfill. Sad but like the dead birds nothing is permanent. The birds will return in time.
Lovely thought process kim. I really enjoyed this video.

I think this is the most compelling video on your channel, thank you Kim. I shoot film, mostly black and white, and do nothing with the images except occasionally post on instagram and use as background for zoom calls.Photography gets me out of the house, exploring and learning my surroundings, and processing the film, scanning negatives, etc., is a nice technical challenge that I enjoy. So, if you like, it's a sanity preservation activity. Luckily I have a day job that frees me from the need to make photography a commercial activity. Thanks Kim, this is a rare youtube video that actually made me think.

Thanks for this video, it did indeed inspire thoughts about my personal purpose in photography.
Essentially I take pictures for myself, I share some on social media and occasionally print as gifts or to make note cards for people, but that is all.
I agree with your point about the process of creating and connecting with your subject as being the reason to do it, it is my way of engaging with the world around me.
However over the last few years I have realised that my photography has fulfilled another purpose and that is to maintain my well-being. I know this is close to your heart and I think you were the first person that I saw on RUclips talking about 'mindfulness'. Over the past two years my sanity has been maintained through going out and taking pictures. Thanks for the vlog.

Spot on! I went through a phase where several years of exuberant photo-taking came to a near standstill, save for occasional iPhone snapshots. Why? The utter despondence that it was all for naught. Having amassed several thousand images, the vast majority have never been seen by anyone but me through the rear-LCD of the camera I took them on.
I recently went on a safari and in preparation, upgraded my kit to do justice to the wildlife and scenics I would encounter. I’m glad I did, not only for actually getting more meaningful images, but it rekindled my passion for freezing moments of beauty.
I’ve since started cataloging my stash chronologically, and by event. It’s taking me and my family on an amazing journey of past experiences. I’ve never sold a print in my life, but would love to. Or a photo-book, perhaps. But that aside, going through this collection has given me the impetus to go out and indulge in the activity again, savoring the moment, whilst preserving memories for the future.

Your right about the bird in the photographs it just adds that little sign of life and freedom to the picture. Nicely done. I love taking pictures of birds because they just signal a simpler way of life, a bit of fun, and a lot of freedom to go where you want to go whenever you want to. They just seem to trigger that dream I’ve always had to be able to fly. The freedom that provides. The opportunity to see the world from a different perspective every day.

I didn't expect that! You eloquently expressed my own sentiments. Some of the images I create are used as screen savers on my laptop, but I typically don't share them with other people. They primarily serve as a tool to improve my own experience and preserve or recall memories. I enjoy the process of photography, learning, and improvement. I use it as a tool for expanding my awareness. For me it tends to shift my focus from the ugliness of the human experience over to the beauty. It is easy for me to get mired in the ugliness, so the search for beauty and making myself more aware of the polar opposite of the ugliness of the external world, helps to balance the equation and have a more enjoyable experience via this extremely limited perspective as a human.

I'm glad you answered your question. People ask me this all the time. Mainly stuff either gets stored on hard drives, the dross gets deleted. Lots on social media. Social media can be like showing slides to friends and family many years ago. The difference is they're not a captive market now and choose whether or not they want to view them. Sharing online in different groups and letting other like minded people gauge your work can be very rewarding too.

23 degrees! You've had it quite easy Kim! Although I'm sure I don't need to tell you that. It's been as high as 34 - 36 here in Nottinghamshire! Having said that, as I look out of my bedroom window there is the most spectacular sunset I've ever seen! The colours in the sky are out of this world! Pinks, purples, oranges! Amazing. And where am I?..Indoors! Typical! 😂😂

Reducing thousands of pictures to one hundred, editing them, sequence them, makes me go through this intensive moments of taking them again.

After only a day and 100+ comments it seems I have learned how many people are just taking the photos for themselves. That surprised me. 48,248 pics (not so many since I started digital in 1999). Thank you for a very insightful video, Kim. I appreciate the different slant you have taken when answering this question. It takes a bit of work to get to the stage where you take photos purely for the experience it brings rather than feeling the need to do something with the images.
When I returned to photography after a few lean years I felt the need to share my journey so that I would keep myself motivated. I decided to chart my experiences in an online blog. Four years later it’s still going. I don’t have many readers but that’s ok. If only one person is inspired to start photography from something I write then I am happy. I get to share some of my images in the blog and it also feeds my other passion, writing.

The camera is the tool that makes you wait for that moment to take the photograph it is the reason you stay and ponder the scene.
Sucking in its beauty. Your patience is a virtue and the camera demands your patience and then you see the moment you have been waiting for and the camera fires and preserves that very moment. You feel elated seeing the image. Time is progressive it can't be reversed
A great feeling knowing you were in the moment at that precise second, just a point in time captured forever. This is very rewarding.
When I look at some of my special images taken some years ago it takes me back in time and reminds me of that moment.

I completely connect with this. You articúlate here something that I am also often asked… I have a modest RUclips channel, blog and FB page which act merely as an outlet for me to express what the taking of a photograph does for me. It takes me to amazing places at times of the day and night when nobody else (other than those with a similar passion) would be there. I get to see things that can just take my breath away. The photographs and videos help me to remember the experience in a way that my aging brain cells would otherwise fail to keep up with. I love to look back at things I did years ago and recapture those special moments. Thanks for your great videos.

I have all of these photos on a flash drive and also in my computer and run as a slide show when we have a get together at the house. Everyboby likes to see them and brings back so many good memories. You can remember exactly where you were and so many details about the photo. Absolutely love photograbhy . My escape from the crazy world. Love seeing your RUclips videos. Keep getting out there, Thanks !!!

Thank you, I think I love you for your sincerity, it is so refreshing. I am 69, a former Hippie (oh yeah the 60s) retired professional soldier, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and through my wife, I have found photography to be a very healing gift. I have been shooting now for a bit over 5 years and accumulated well over 30,000 compositions both film and digital. I print some and give them away, maybe a few for myself, but usually I just share them with the world, not that I'm great.
Actually, I think I am mediocre, but we are our worst critics, right. My belief, my mantra if you will: If you love something you do not profit from that love. I love it because it allows me to capture a special moment in time that only I was privy to and I feel a need to share it so others can as well.
I have been told "you're really good, you need to sell them" but evidently they don't get it, I mean if you love something that is so personal you don't sell it do you? Some do, I do not. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for saying it so much better than I ever could. I would like to be able to send you a couple of mine in a way to say thanks, but I honestly don't know how that would be possible.

I have been taking photographs for over 50 years, 10 of them as a professional in the 1980’s. I moved on once I realised that in the professional advertising industry, I was basically the technician at the command of creative directors.
For the last 16 years I have used photography to capture memories of travel adventures and as a creative hobby. I try to share an image online every week with family and friends. In addition, each year I print, usually on canvas, about 12-15 photos at between 40 x 60 to 60 x 90 cm to hang on my walls and then give away to family and friends. And I make an annual calendar to gift to friends and acquaintances. I make slide shows to share with the people I accompanied on adventures. Lastly I have produced 8 books of either major adventures ( 30 month motorcycle trip the length of the Americas) or favourite images of a year. In my dotage, I find comfort looking through these books in reliving the memories!

I've been doing photography as a hobby for over 20 years. I love being out in nature and love birding. I live in Miami, FL, where it's always green. One of the things I love to do is go somewhere to see fall color, so I try to do that yearly. I set up a website and I love to share my images through blogging. There's always a story to tell, so that's the way I do it. I don't have many followers, mostly family, but it makes me happy to share. I haven't picked up my camera in many months. Like you said in another video I watched today, I've kind of lost my mojo and I'm tired. You have been very motivating to me. My camera is out of my backpack and I'm charging up my batteries. It's very hot here too, but I'm thinking about getting out this coming weekend to my local botanical garden. Glad I stumbled upon your channel. You are truly a special person.

I've been photographing, on and off mostly off, for the past 50 years. I've done darkroom printing a bit. Moved to digital about 2012. I made a photo book of my children when they were little and gave each a copy as a gift. When the pandemic hit and we were advised to shelter in place I thought to print and send cards to family and friends as an old fashioned way to connect. Hand written cards are way more personal than texts or tweets. I did that many times and for the last few times I printed and included two postcards, with stamps, so people could reach out to others with a handwritten card.I like that photography gets you out in nature. For me it gets me out, be that nature or the street, but in addition I "discover" things i.e. I'm more aware of what's around me.

First time to your channel and I loved hearing your perspective and eloquent explanation. I identify with what you’ve said, putting them into words that I’ve felt when I’m out in the field, but haven’t been able to fully express. Photography propels my pursuit and appreciation for the natural world. Without it, I’d still be the same homebody and studio rat. You’ve instantly helped take off some of the pressure that I place on myself to constantly produce. Thank you!

Great video Kim. Drawing attention to the plight of nature can never be more emphasized ! As you say we actually live 'in' nature and the great truth is 'we have no alternative' or another nature. This is it !! Like your approach and thinking behind 'what do I do with my images' and why you make images !!

All the yes. Im new to photography and have just got an actual camera. So im trying to learn a lot but I love taking photos and doing editing as well. Last week I went up to a little mountain here in Norway in the middle of the night. As I waited for the sun rise I heard deer began to sing to eachother in the valley below. It was so magical to experience. I had no idea they did that. And then the sun began to rise and I swear, it was such a beautiful moment. Have a ton of beautiful photos from it. Im so glad I can take my camera out in nature and take photos of things like that. We are lucky to have found this joy. I have no idea what to do with the photos other then to post on social media, but I know this is what I want to do for the rest of my life :)

Thank you Kim for sharing yourself, your heart, with us. I share my images with others through social media and I share my ability to do photography with some groups to document events. I too use photography as an excuse to get out. I have recently revived an old passion of documenting wildlife with a camera trap. It's heart breaking to see those birds like that. You should use those images in a campaign to raise awareness.

I'm very much in agreement with you Kim. I have always enjoyed photography since I started in the late 1950s. (I really do not enjoy time at the PC so I use it for cataloguing and retrieving images but edit as little as possible).
There's fun and satisfaction in using a well made precision tool to create something you like. Owning such a camera encourages one to go out and use it, get some exercise and spend time in places you love and can relax in, and add interest to a walk. I quite often meet a dog walker who starts a conversation by asking if I've taken any good shots. I like to say one reason I carry it is because I no longer have a dog, and in many ways the camera does the same job - even including giving you work to do at home.
(My apologies for the late comment. I normally watch your videos on a smart TV because of the larger screen, but I can't add comments on it so I've turned the laptop on to send this one).

Hi Kim, great and honest video. My life rule I live by is “ it’s not the end result, it’s the journey”. For me taking nature photos is a very humbling, personal and awesome experience. I put some on social media because I just want people to look and appreciate nature and how lucky humanity is to be here. I was unaware of the bird flu in the UK, as I live in Tasmania, Australia, very sad and I hope a remedy is coming.

    Hi Kim,
Thanks for such a thought-provoking video on so many fronts. For the most part, I don't do much with my photographs, but in the last three years, during year and at the end of the year, I put together what I believe are my very best photographs of the year. The most it has been in one year is 12 and it has been as few as eight. Just before Christmas, I did print them in a small book, because there is something deeply satisfying in holding something tangible in your hands, such as a print. It also immediately brings back the memory of the emotion I experienced at the time that made me want to make the photograph in the first place. I agree with you that the real joy of landscape photography is being out with the camera and engaging in nature. Sometimes when I go out and the photography isn't happening, for whatever reason, I still feel I have been fulfilled in going out and engaging with the landscape, from experiencing the smells of wildflowers, listening to birdsong or a chipmunk rustling in leaf litter in the undergrowth, or just feeling a gentle breeze on my face, the back of my neck, or on may legs. The images are an added bonus, if they happen. But I also do agree with the philosophy of Ansel Admans, who was a musician (pianist), before he became a professional landscape photographer. He said something along the lines of the negative is the composer's score and the print is the performance. He also said if you get 12 really good images in a year - so-called keepers - you're doing very well. I don't expect to come back with any photographs every time I go out and as soon as I realized that engaging with nature was the important part, I have no longer been disappointed when I come back with just memories.
I had read about the avian flu issue, but there's nothing like seeing tangible evidence of a dead gannet to really bring home the seriousness of this. You're right, as photographers, we see so much of the adverse impact that we are having on the planet, and I hope that our photographs, whether printed, or just shared on social media, can make people realize the earth is precious, it needs to be cared for and it is the only home we have.

Yes, just being out and taking the photos is often reward in itself.
I mainly share my photos on Instagram and my Facebook page, and I've recently started my RUclips channel to show the taking of some of the photos. I haven't gotten nearly as philosophical as some RUclipsrs, but I'm having fun with my amateur quality videos. I've sold a few photos in the past, and definitely would like to continue to do so as I can. As much as I would like it to be, photography is not my full time job, so I'm not really worried about making money at it.
Our photographs represent our connection with the world around us, and therefore represent ourselves. As long as that continues to be the case, what we do with them really doesn't matter.

I was so happy to hear your philosophy of enjoying the moment of taking the photo. I enjoy wildlife/ birds and I have had people ask me what I do with them. I share on fb groups, or on my fb page and get nice comments from friends, which is encouraging. I also print out on Mixtiles. Not too expensive and I can rotate around. As an aside, than you for your heartfelt connection for the plight of your birds. It is so sad.
