Ships and boats, whether their military , fishing, pleasure, wrecks or beached boats, I like to go to quays, marina's, canals, just something about them, and there settings, my comfortable place. I took some photographs at a wedding in Italy a couple of weeks ago, I'm not a people photographer, I felt very uncomfortable to be perfectly honest ,I like your grass pictures , did you call the method ICM!!!! x

Thanks 🙏🏼 for the great video!! You made me 🤔 think about my photography in a way I had not . I love nature photography. But when I thought about it I’m drawn to macro and bird photography more than anything. Traveling to new places is fun , but if I don’t feel a connection with the place and subject, then I don’t like the photos as much. Again, thanks 🙏🏼 for this realization!!! 📸😊

Great video Kim and some very wise advice - thank you. For me I’m regularly drawn to Mersea Island on the Essex coast, just 25 mins from home. I love the boats, the salt marsh and the 2 river estuaries at either end if it.

I've been an amateur photographer for over 50 years. The challenge for me now, due to my health and limited opportunities, is mostly photographing within a mile or two from home with easy walking. So I go out for an hour or two most days and take photos of "everyday" scenes and things, trying to make them look interesting.

Depending on the type of photography you do, you need to change your mindset.
For Wildlife you need lots of patience, and to go out on your own.
    For sports, you need anticipation.
For landscapes, the ability to experiment, and have an eye for the unusual.
Don't be afraid to take a lot of photos, even if you delete a lot of them. Don't think you have
to obey any rules of photography.
    Very nice video Kim.

When you feel like you're home makes the best photography. Sad that it took COVID to show many photographers that what they need to photograph is in their backyard instead of travelling outside the area. I use to watch and subscribe to many photographer but they don't care about me as I'm just a number. They don't check out subscriber channels, most fake excitement and use the same words in every video. After 43 years of taking pictures, I've been trying video and it's given me something to learn and really I'm just capturing memories. The best and greatest photo will be the last one I take. Enjoy what you do and live the dream because life passes very fast and if you don't enjoy what you do it shows.

Thank you Kim! What you said at the end really clarified how I was feeling . I was disappointed with the photos I took while on holiday but I realise now , as beautiful as the location was I wasn't there long enough to the create a connection. All I was ever going to get was decent holiday snaps! All my best work was during lockdown when I wandered the town and beach truly absorbed in capturing the beauty. This video has taken a weight from me! Thank you so much. 💖

Thank you so much for this video. Your advice is exactly what I needed to hear right now.
I am in Tasmania and have Scottish/Irish ancestry, so I am always feeling 'home' calling me. But here in Tasmania, there are some beautiful landscapes that offer a strong sense of place, and I love those places, because I was born and grew up up here. No more trying to think of where to go to take some photos, because I know in my heart where the special places are. Thank you again. Loved this video so much. xxx.

Wise words Kim, and during lockdown I explored dozens of footpaths around my house that I didn't even know existed. I was amazed how many good shots I came away with just from walking a mile or so from home. Now we are free to travel again, but I still head out once a week or so to revisit those paths. Getting to know a landscape in all its moods and seasons helps get the best from it, no doubt.

Couldn’t agree more, it’s all about instinct but also a bit like riding a bike, muscle memory kicks in when your instincts take over and that’s when the journey begins to a great photo. Thanks for the wee escape to the beach, currently sitting in an airport looking at concrete so this was brilliant. 😊

Hi Kim...awesome video...i love the fact that you can go to a beach with no one around for miles and have the privacy to do what you want wo being spied upon...beautiful beach area...I love the way you just "let go" of preconceived notions of taking photos and take photos of what YOU like... I remember in the beginning of my photography start that i didnt know what i wanted to photograph, so you just take photos of a lot of different things....Until one day i discovered beautiful sunsets and magnificent thunderstorms with lightning and Astro...that is MY passion now...it just takes time to find your "niche" for photos...Thanx Kim...cant wait for your next vid.....

Hello from Colorado, and thank you for this lesson. I had never vocalized it, but seeing this video and relating it to my own experiences, it may have helped me to come to the same realization. I've traveled a bit, yet I have seen far too little of my home state. Colorado is, in my opinion, one of the truly beautiful places. From prairie to mountains to desert, we have a diverse ecosystem, and something to find for every taste. In one week I'll be exploring with my sister, in a small part of the mountains where I've never been before. We are taking 5 days to be able to take the time to immerse ourselves, to just let our cameras find their own images. Watching you, watching Simon, has given me a way of approaching it that I hadn't really considered. So thank you, and I wish you many years of happy rambling around your beautiful home.

    Great video, Kim!
When I transitioned from film I went through quite a few digital cameras before I realised the cameras I wanted to shoot with. I also bought loads of equipment. Every year we would rent a beach house and my priority was to get all of the cameras out and ready, some on tripod, others on window sills so that I could pick one up at a moment's notice. Over the years my equipment requirements decreased. I still have it all and still use it on occasion, but I realised it was all 'clutter'. I have dedicated lenses on each camera body and when I go out I take the camera that 'speaks' to me or feels right on that particular occasion.
I don't worry about what I don't have available. This style gives me what I consider the truest comparison to film - one camera, one lens and an image that presents itself.
How I shoot may not be for everyone, but that doesn't matter. One of the things that I love about photography is that there is room for all of us.

Hmm thought provoking. I take anything and everything, I love taking photos. Just lately I have been taking images of motorbikes that come on a weekend ride to our town. I work at a cafe so I hear them arrive and go and bail them up with the camera. I usually offer to email them the images. It sounds a bit strange but I really enjoy it. Sometimes it leads to a photo shoot later. I did a Ford Model A one day, we drove it around town to locations and attracted a lot of attention. Probably not what you were expecting. Good exercise Kim, looking forward to the next vid.

Thank you for yet another great video! Of course I love the images you make, but even more so your thoughts and philosophy on the creative process. Your channel as well as Simon Baxter's are my channels of choice nowadays. I've primarily been shooting within hiking or biking distance from my home in a suburb of Gothenburg, Sweden for the last couple of years. Luckily I live on the edge of a huge woodland area and I feel exactly as you describe it when I'm in "my forest", connected and alive. Since my spirit animal seems to be the sloth I don't get into the vibe of new locations fast at all... When I feel ready to shoot on a honeypot location it's usually time to go home:) In a time of climate change and ridiculous fuel prices not being dependent on a fossil vehicle feels like a luxury choice! There's a lot of channel telling us how to catch images, I appreciate channels that discuss why we try to catch them...

I’m on a mission to go through your older videos and just came across this one.
I really must try ICM the next time I go out with my camera. I’ve always called it creative blur but mainly because I accidently move the camera while taking the shot.
Those grasses were absolutely amazing. Creative, arty, painterly and I can imagine a huge print up on a wall, perhaps in the reception of an office building.
Thanks for taking us with you, again, I am so jealous that you have the wonderful coastline local to you. Wow!
One question; Where are the midges? On the two occasions I have visited Scotland there has always been clouds of those pesky midges but yet I never see them in any of your videos. What’s your secret?

I like mushrooms, texture of wood, tree bark, macro insects, clouds, waterfowl, birds, landscape, I guess I kind of like everything. I don't have the large lens I see others using, so I do the best i can with what I have, I photograph what I like, and not try to imitate others. I do believe composition is very important, and not just take a picture, but present the photo that those that view it, also find it interesting.

Scotland is a very changeable country weather wise at the best of times but it's getting harder and harder to predict the weather. Ensure you pack for all weathers and you'll be fine 😃 The west also tends to get a lot more rain than the east so where you go will also dictate the weather. Have a great time!

Hi Kim, you have raised some interesting questions to pose for yourself as to what your heart tells you about which locations inspire you to take those photographs that are inspirational. Trying to be individual and seek what you feel is what your heart wants to see and experience, can be very challenging. It can be difficult to be the photographer you want to be and sometimes I stand and look, camera in hand, waiting for that moment of inspiration and I get writers' block. I'm trying hard to find my own self in photography, capturing what I feel is just me and not another photographer's work. It can be so hard at times to be your own self, to listen to your own inner voice. To let go. There are days when I go out to familiar locations, take a number of images and feel hollow knowing that it wasn't what I was looking for and my heart wasn't in it. But then there are those occasions when I don't have any expectations that I will find anything, then I do find something unexpected and for those few special moments I feel I have captured something for myself and it feels wonderful, and it is part of who I am. Those are the special moments for me. I have stopped counting the photographs I take and just remember the ones that touched my heart.

Thank you for such an insightful video, Kim. I personally really feel drawn to water. Of course, I'm an Aquarius, so maybe that's just in my nature. :) Just last evening, I got some nice shots of the full moon rising over a lake. I did have a few duds - mostly from not being properly focused (nighttime photography - go figure!), but overall I was really satisfied with my results & communion with nature. This Saturday I'm looking forward to going to a nearby state park. It's about 92 miles away, but for Texas, that's nearby! LOL The main reason is to celebrate my mom's birthday, but I'm hoping to get some photography & maybe hiking in as well. My ultimate goal is to get some nice sunset photos looking across the lake there. I did take several the last time we went there, but there were no clouds, so the sky was just kind of ho-hum. Fingers crossed I'll have a more interesting sky this time! When I was younger, I used to take trips to paint landscapes. I would get so stressed-out for whatever reason, just thinking about painting on location. I finally started giving myself permission not to make so much as a single brushstroke. That seemed to break up my artistic block, & I was usually able to get at least some painting in. I haven't painted in years, but I still like to do creative things with my hands, & have lately been getting even more into photography. I live with schizophrenia & major depression, so having a creative outlet is important to me. Thankfully, throughout my mental illness journey, I've never lost my ability to be creative. Anyway, thank you again for sharing your thoughts. I am hoping to enter your "Earth" challenge this month. Maybe with photos from this Saturday! :) Take care, & I hope you have a wonderful day! :)

I don't earn from mine, but I use my photography as motivation to get out in nature and just capture life. But I don't do humans, because I've seen over and over again how destroying we are. But currently lacking the motivation to get out, because I know the area and aren't able to get out and explore what I don't see daily. Going to turkey next month, and can't wait to be able to make new memories and exploring 😊 it will be a challenge though, because I'm a max 10 degrees Celsius person 😅 I'm from the Faroe Islands, just a stone throw north of Scotland 😊

That was so weird Kim! I was just thinking to myself "That place looks Heavenly!" and then you said the exact same thing! I've thought long and hard, to the point of agonising over the places I go to and the kind of photography I want to do Kim. You see, I have one major problem. Wherever I go, it has to be where I can physically get to, because I don't drive. We have a car, which my wife drives, but she has M.E. so she can only take me to different places when she feels up to it. Other than that it's wherever I can get to on my mobility scooter, which does restrict me to very local places.

I often think we want an emotional response to our photography so to that end we need to amerce ourselves as photographers and feel that emotion as we frame our next photograph

An image always means more when we're emotions connected to it 😃

I know exactly what you mean about Glencoe. Beautiful scenery, but it is hard to get an original shot.

It can be. I just don't feel creativity connected to it. Plenty of opportunities for images there for those who love it ☺️

I'm noticing so far everywhere seems to be much quieter this year. It's nice and peaceful! Was mid week too which helped ☺️

You'd be impressed with me this week. I took my shoes and socks off while I photographed a Time Lapse of the tide coming in and covering over the Lindisfarne causeway. This allowed me to stay longer while the tide flowed all around me. 😀

@@kimgrantphotography I appear to be suffering the same visual problem as you with dust spots on my camera sensor. 😜
If you have a few moments to spare, you are more than welcome to watch my latest offering where I got my feet wet and suffered for my art. 🤣

Something is wrong with the sound. And I’m not getting what you want to share, but that’s just me.

What a great video! I've often asked myself the same question when traveling to other locations to photograph. I always seem to migrate back to the Midwest because it'w where I'm drawn. I agree with you, I always seem to find that my photography improves shooting in my own playground :-). FYI I'm following you on Instagram. Keep the great videos coming :-)

I’ve noticed the same thing, my best work is what I’ve done locally. I always thought something was wrong with me.

I've been a photographer for 53 years - it's all about planning, technique, knowing the limitations of your gear .... and most of all, practice, practice, practice. Also, don't wipe your lenses when you're sitting on a wind-blown beach.
