Your ability to see that photographic opportunity with a rock and those pebbles were amazing most would look and not see.
In your early opening words, take a little time to tune your senses to the world around you. This allowed you to become one with nature on that special morning. That's when the rock became special immortalised in a photograph, a point in time.

A few years ago, at the start of June, we went from sunset to sunrise without any darkness - I was awake throughout, it was quite a unique experience and the sky colour went on for several hours.

Beautiful. Your video today really struck a chord. Convinced that others (some) would be equally convinced that we're mad to do these early morning photography walks which make our imagination's synapses fire! Hopefully, even if a single new viewer, decides to pick up a camera or smartphone and walk for no particular reason besides trying to see something new then you have achieved something even greater. Thanks Kim.

Another beautiful video, Kim, with a strong message about the richness of the experience being more important than the photography itself. Very much along the lines of the journey being more important than the destination. I’m beginning to find, now, that the more mindful I am in the location, the deeper the experience, the more in-tune I become, and the photography is meaning more and I think I’m getting better photographs.

You reminded me of how lovely the light in Scotland can be at this time of the year. I lived in Arbroath many years ago and around midsummer it hardly got dark. Even later than 11.00pm there was always a soft light in the northern sky. Even more so for you I guess! Thanks!

I quite like your approach to lighting, textures, repeating shapes, and patterns and just by mindful observation finding good photographic opportunities. The colours of the rocks on the shingle beach were sublime. I also like how a bird can make an image so much more interesting. Nothing quite like an early morning summer stroll. Love the video and sentiment, Kim. We regularly rent a beach house where I may stay up all night to catch the captivating moonlight views and the very earliest flickers of daylight. There's a celtic mysticism that enriches the sight, sounds and scents. On a clear day I can see sixty miles to Islay and, sometimes, the Paps of Jura beyond. That vision has captivated me ever since my Dad pointed it out to me more than sixty years ago while on holiday. I've even bought the Olympus 100-400mm lens and OMD EM1 Mkiii in an effort to get the perfect capture of that view. Something tells me I'll be pursuing that for the rest of my days.
We're fortunate in living close to some stunning beaches that I have the privilege of enjoying in solitude while the rest of the world is busy earning a living. Walking a beach, camera in hand, taking the time to appreciate the sky, the sea, the sights, the sounds, the beauty that is all around us, the fishing boats heading out to sea or returning with their catch all serve to highlight the power and beauty of nature in assisting and maintaining our own well-being.
Sometimes I won't even look at the photos I've shot after leaving the beach. To do so would be to disrupt the perfection I experienced while there. Sometimes true perfection is simply being in the moment, having the ability to realise that, and taking the time to just drink it all in.

I love your stone images. The colours are beautiful. Also, the photos of the waves capture the light so beautifully (love the bird image). I would really love to be able to go solo to the beach like you do and wander around freely. I purchased a personal safety alarm, but I still don't feel safe about going out by myself early in the morning. I think I definitely need to find a photography buddy. I'm getting so frustrated at so many missed opportunities. I'm someone who likes to wander on my own without distraction in areas where either my hubby is close by in the car waiting (which is a pain for him waiting and for me feeling pressurised to hurry up), or I photograph near a local vacinity. I guess if a photography buddy helps for early morning trips to quiet locations, then that's maybe what I should consider.
How do you keep yourself safe doing solo photography and have you any tips you could share?

    • @kimgrantphotography
      @kimgrantphotography  2 года назад +1

Hi Wendy, I'm sad to read that you don't feel safe out with your camera. Many woman echo your feelings and I'm always sad to read comments like this.
I'm very conscious about where I go. I don't feel safe in a woodland for instance but by the sea, I always feel free and protected. I'm not sure where your based but going by your profile photo, I'm guessing you're in Scotland too? I usually only shoot in areas I know well or in the Highlands on my own. To me nature is my sanctuary. I keep my wits about me and try and stay away from other people where possible. I appreciate this isn't always easy. Over the years I've realised how much time in nature on my own helps me. I'm selective of where I go and try not to let the fear of others worry me. I appreciate this is easier said than done. I trust when I'm in flow that I am safe and protected. I hope this helps you a little bit. Getting a photo buddy could certainly help you feel safer though. I sincerely hope you're able to find one 😊

@@kimgrantphotography I live in Aberdeenshire. I was threatened by an ex convict (work-related incident) some years ago and it left me more personally wary as a result. It's not 'area' related as such, but more "there's some pretty undersirable people out there regardless!" I also worked as a special Police officer in my younger days in a lovely location on the west coast. I had my eyes opened to what goes on in the wee small hours and once again, there are some strange people in places you wouldn't think when it's quiet. It is few and far between, but it's left me perhaps overly careful I guess. Like yourself, forests are a no go when I'm alone.

You are definitely getting your money’s worth from that lens.😀
For the last 12 years I’ve been doing days and nights on an ambulance which means I’ve had more than my fair share of observing the sun and moon float across the sky. Clouds permitting, I’ve seen some spectacular sun rises and sunsets.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though. Come winter time between November and February, I only see 60 days of light and most of that is cloud cover.
If you get up before sun rise this month, there is a good chance that you will be able to spot all the planets and moon at the same time. This month they are all in alignment. You may need binoculars for Mercury but you will definitely need them for Uranus and Neptune. But still, you will be able to gaze out at our solar system in one spot. Not bad for grounding and giving perspective on our tiny corner of the universe.

The correct term is "in situ" the rock wasn't in situ, meaning it's not part of the bedrock. Glacial erratics human transported rocks, river and ocean beach transported rocks are all non in situ.
