I think the best thing about RUclips now with wrestling is that it allows wrestlers to have platforms like this. To where I always liked Stevie as a wrestler but I never knew anything about him other than his character and thought he deserved way more than what he was given later in his career. But seeing this show I get to know Stevie and his views on wrestling and his personality and it makes me like him a wrestler even more. Makes me want to go watch the matches he’s talking about with him in it even more. To see he likes video games he likes tech, he likes fitness to see he’s so similar to us in many ways is cool. I’m just waiting in anticipation for that Dr Stevie and TNA episode because that’s such an underrated part of his career. Underrated because TNA never gets the love it deserves from around that time period
That contract story is insane. I love what Paul Heyman did for wrestling and admire his mind but that piece of paper he wanted you to sign wasnt worth the money it cost to print and put ink on. Im glad you had the foresight to not trust him. My jaw literally dropped hearing he wanted you to sign a sheet with no years or money listed. Ive heard plenty of shady heyman stories that now with time are kinda funny like the extra number on a fed ex bubba had to ship or whatever but that one is legit scary. Much love to you stevie. This is a great show! I only found it about a week or so ago, this is my first new episode that im hearing. Really great stuff!
Heyman is a good manager, and he had SOME good ideas in ECW, but frankly, most of the worst parts of the "Attitude Era" (treating the women like strippers, the focus on pointless cussing and "sexual" content, crappy/dangerous "hardcore" matches and spots, etc.), were emulated in WCW and WWF from ECW. I'm not so sure that Paul/ECW's impact/influence on 90s onward wrestling was as positive as people think, just the same as the "Attitude Era" wasn't as amazing as people seem to want to remember it being.
I'm so glad to see guys like Stevie Richards and Maven carve out their space on this platform and thrive in it. I always preferred to watch the "mid card" acts in wrestling because the upper card always had backing and I always seen myself as an underdog in everything I did so I related to them. Obviously I wouldn't ever compare myself to these amazing pro wrestlers but it's how you looked at it as a teenager. Thank you all for sharing your stories and I'm thoroughly enjoying the content ☺️❤️🌎🙏🏼
Stevie, you and the show have just been mentioned in a Star Trek podcast that I listen to today. One of the hosts Matt Mira is a huge wrestling fan. You should give it a listen. It's called Star Trek the next conversation. 👍
Love watching Stevie's shows such an amazing insight compared to others and his contemporaries, this show I'm super pumped for with an F'n Avalanche Stevie Kick
You guys are still sounding uncertain if you've got it right, but it's probably one of the best podcasts, especially about wrestling, out here today. Keep it going!
James we did get the 3.34 inch G.I Joe figures here under the name Action Force, also the American G.I Joe comics were out here as Action Force Weekly. The first couple of waves of action force smaller figures were original, then it changed to just G.I Joe figures repackaged. Also got a lot of other stuff here you say we didn't it just seems like you lived a very sheltered life without toys, tv, movies or general pop culture.
U guys KILL every episode and its currently on the list of my “cant wait” podcasts. HOWEVER, (😬😁) during the part when y’all got to Grand Wizard, Snuka, etc…. I have to admit i was going (slightly) ape in my mind cuz of the either not knowing or juat wrong info. NO DISRESPECT guys. I LOVE your show but maaaaan i wish i had the ability to chime in. This comment is long enough already n im sure this may have been touched upon already but i needed to share. Again, look forward to the show every week and i cannot express my grattitude for your efforts, time, stories and of course the look inside. Thank u. 👊🏻✊🏻🤘🏻🙏🏻🙌🏼
Excellent episode as always and I love hearing the combined depth of knowledge and history Stevie and James collectively had. My only nitpick is that the episode is titled "Paul F'n Heyman" and there's more time talking about wrestling managers than the title topic. Didn't make it less interesting, but it was a touch surprising at how long the segment went.
Catching up on all the episodes. Very much enjoying them. Ty for that. But Stevie, when you mentioned the “western states heritage” championship I almost died 😂 I think only two people ever held that title as well. Zbyszko and Kendall Windham. Great pull!
I may have missed them mentioning him, but I didn't hear them mention Father James Mitchell or Sinister Minister among the manager listing tier list. He did wonderful work in ECW, WCW, and TNA, especially when he was the mouthpiece for the Monster Abyss.
Always a big fan fellas of the content. Content is always full of education. I love the break down of the moves. I remember the Beverly Brothers but I don’t remember the Shaker Heights Spike. That was a horrible move. And Stevie, you are right that’s a bull shit for enhancement talent. God, they could have killed someone. Solid Mount Rushmore of managers. Catch you on the next.
When Stevie Richards sayed "too exciting about it James!" when in fact James made a slight "WTF?!"-face after the annoncing of the give away-idea, really made me laugh a lot! 😂 Because it simply adds to the impression that James is not a fan to give a shout out or support to any content creator, unless that person has a big name and could help his own channel. James said he is sick, So accept that escuse for such a face, but still. It was funny!
Hey, not sure if you reply to comments but is there a drop time for the pod? I know its Friday but Im in Australia so thats Saturday for me and I work weekends and I have my pod rotation on for my shifts at work. 👍👍
I’ve been watching wwe from 1999 and Stevie had me 🤣 🤣🤣 when he came out dressed like Elvis and started singing to Chyna “she’s a women”!! w.o.m.e.n I love Micheal Cole’s commentary on Stevie because he always says Stevie just wants to fit in which listening to Stevie talk about the business seems like a shoot
He got a good push with RTC, but the problem was, Vince never really believed in it, the other wrestlers in it outside of maybe Bull and Ivory, didn't want to be in it, and Stevie himself was in a dark place, mentally, so he didn't/couldn't take full advantage of it.
Paul Heyman is just behaving exactly like all of the people who wear the kind of hat that he does behave. Taking advantage of everyone around him and walking away with all the money. The stereotypes exist because they're the truth
I understand thinking about her as a singles but Lita really had surprisingly strong manager run. While she wrestled a ton she integral to the team extreme concept which got the Hardy Boys super over (as well as herself) and she completely reformed herself and was pivotal to FINALLY getting Edge over as a legit main eventer. They had been trying since 2002 and I have no doubt he would have eventually made it, but she was just a huge part of the package that finally clicked and it was a totally different package then her Team Extreme days.
Just wanted too say another great episode guys, now I know why the Beverly Brothers never got pushed in the WWF at the time, those guys should’ve been fired after the first time they ever did that horrible finisher that didn’t even look good as a finisher, just a broken neck waiting to happen, keep up the excellent work, and never let anyone tell you that a 2 or 3 hour show is a bad idea,I never know how long a episode is until it’s over, enjoy your weekend an Turkey Day coming up
C’mon James, we had G.I.Joe over here and it was huge. A big part of my childhood. It stared off as Action Force which was a spin off of Action Man to capitalise on the popularity of Star Wars scale Figures. The US G.I.Joe figures took over the line under the Action Force brand until Hasbro phased the G.I.Joe brand fully into the UK market. You crazy guy.
Stevie's comment at the 1:04 mark about how people used to travel for hours just to work on the show for free for experience - that's not just in the past. Check out Gabe Sapolsky's Wresting Spaces. As recently as this past WM weekend, there were a ton of new people who traveled inter-state to work on indie shows, mainly in backstage roles for no money whatsoever & were delighted to get that experience.
Paul also deserves credit for making Viking hall some kind of mythical venue when it’s really a giant toilet. It had rats and roaches and it always smelled like a mix of sweat, pee, and homeless people. It’s amazing to me that people from out of town who have never been there talk about Viking hall like it’s this great place.
For your "Future episode" - your question at 1:38 regarding the psychological mindset of charismatic leaders (in this case Paul Heyman): While I don't do research on personality traits, he - like many leaders - might arguably be high in the "Dark Triad" traits of Machievellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy (of which the first two are arguably extremely important for success in professional wrestling). However, more to my research (nonverbal behavior and political leadership) - and personal experience - leaders often create (consciously or unconsciously) "niches" in which they are the heroes of the narratives they create about themselves - and surround themselves with followers that reinforce this (Tommy Dreamer - by being the "first follower" and exceptionally competent and [presumably] respected in the backstage area - likely enabled this in a similar manner that an NCO enables commissioned officers in the military to be successful). The personality flaws y'all mention are likely even more so in the case with leaders whose public performance relies upon connection with their audience (pro wrestling, politics, religion, etc.). Charismatic leaders are highly expressive nonverbally (facial behavior, gestures, voice tone) and have to make sure their words and behavior cohere together in order to convince others - in short, they have to convince themselves in order to convince others. When the words don't match the nonverbal behavior (micro-expressions, eye blink rate, displacement gestures, and my favorite - unilateral/one-sided shoulder shrugs) people subconsciously pick up on it (in other words, that gut feeling we have). So when you have big personalities self-selecting to become involved in an industry (here, pro wrestling), and then they dial up their personalities to an "11" - and these individuals have no real established outside checks on their behavior, then you have a recipe for self- and other-deception - with all the bad outcomes you mention (and yes, we here in academia have the same problem!). As a side note - thanks for the Minnesota wrestling call out! My fondest memories are watching Twin Cities (AWA?) pro wrestling with my Grandfather in 1970s.
Stevie’s words starting around 45 minutes in really struck a chord. I worked as a ref and occasional wrestler in North Texas for several years, and while I do have a small handful of guys that I consider lifelong friends, most I have no intention of ever interacting with again. So many of the workers are just awful people. I saw guys do really, really terrible things with “rats” that I somehow justified at the time, but looking back makes me feel ill.
Hey Stevie Been wondering if theres any place we can get some merch or potentially signed poster or the such or if I could send a Figure your way to sign if possible , I live in the Uk so getting to meet ya would potentially be zero for me ,but I would for sure be interested if there was any way to make this possible :)
Hey Doc Stevie and James! This was a really deep episode. I absolutely have a lot of mixed feeling about Paul E. From one stand point I love a lot of what he has brought to and done for the business. But my gawd... he has also done so much harm to people. It's terribly confusing. But really, when you look at the history of wrestling it's just chock full of problematic people. Dynamite Kid, fantastic talent, inspired *a lot* of other people but I think we all know some of the things that kind of tarnish his legacy. Atsushi Onita. Fabulous Moolah. Chris Benoit... I could probably run out of characters typing a list of just names. It's an imperfect business, in an imperfect world full of complicated and flawed people. Yet, I still love pro-wrestling with all my heart. And I honestly don't know what that says about me sometimes. 😅🤔
James those glasses make you look like triple h son. I’d like to hear Stevie talk about punching ric flair in an open button down with no undershirt and Tommy dreamer’s borrowed pants. Why were they trying to push the word “wacko”? In 2002, did people actually refer to crazy mfs as wacko? Thats a stupid moniker. You deserved better stevie.
Last show it was Costco, this time its GI Joe...😅 We did get Gi Joe,but it was called Action Force. Action Man was entirely different and went back to the 40s/50s .Decades before GI Joe
The Coach was atrocious.... Frenchy martin wasnt stellar... Skandor Akbar was excellent in UWF/world Class. Kevin Sullivan in Florida & with the Varsity Club was legendary. Heyman's best managing in his pre-ECW was with the Dangerous Alliance. Cornette was amazing, he gets hurt by never managing a top singles guy during a main event run during his NWA/WCW time. I like Bearer/Pringle, but i cant put him ahead of JJ Dillon or Jimmy Hart. No way. Nope. Heenan just transcends eras and promotions with his work.
Every morning before leaving my house for work I whisper to myself, “I’ll show you…you’ll see.”
I say it the way Stevie says it.
Awesomeness
I have always been a wrestling fan ... just can remember Stevie from way back wicked! Happy to see much respect and thank you guys rock on 🤘!
So glad I found this show. Stevie is one of the most earnest people that talk about wrestling.
I’ve been on a Stevie show and Stevie Night Heat binge. Love you Stevie.
You found that compilation on RUclips too 😅
Everyone comment the shit out of this while listening and Stevie gets paid more and get this man finally gets his dues!
Been watching an 8 hour long RUclips video that compiles all of Stevie Night Heat. I love that Stevie booked Heat for 8 months without anyone knowing!
When was he booking it?
@ it was when he was coming out every week dressed as another wrestler trying to fit in.
I think the best thing about RUclips now with wrestling is that it allows wrestlers to have platforms like this. To where I always liked Stevie as a wrestler but I never knew anything about him other than his character and thought he deserved way more than what he was given later in his career.
