Pretty sure thousand needles was the most drastically changed of all zones. It was wild to me seeing the entire place completely submerged. Plenty of zones got more localized floods, even Gadgetzan in Tanaris, just south of thousand needles, went from an inland city to a coastal city when the ocean AAAAAALMOST flooded it.
It is actually VERY easy to get around the zone; you enter now from Feralas. After doing a quick quest, you are taken on a canoe to the barge, and a couple of quests later you get your own boat that you can summon.
I was about to talk about that, you also got a helmet, that worked as a buff that kicked in whenever you went underwater, so no need to change helmets or hats, it greatly increased swimming speed plus, infinite oxygen, so you could do the many underwater quests, a very cool questing zone for me.
I remember spending a lot of time playing in Thousand Needles pre Cataclysm. I tried playing Cataclysm but was so disappointed that Blizzard changed so many original zones. They knew they had lighting in a bottle with WOW but I think, looking back, they wouldn't have released Cataclysm. This is around the time they started losing many subscribers.
wow would have lost any amount of subscribers, 2010 was when League of Legends and the big F2P boom happened, even the most perfect version of WoW would have lost millions of subscribers because they still use that antiquated buy 2 different versions of WoW and a monthly subscription.
I love the Speedbarge and maybe have caused more than my fair share of bar fights in the inn (sometimes a Goblin just needs a whack with a bottle of grog).
I was okay with Thousand Needles being submerged during Cataclysm, but my whole issue with the new Thousand Needles, along with the rest of the Cataclysm changes is that things were made either too campy or over the top. For example, Thousand Needles is supposed to be this distant exotic and hostile land with a lot wilderness and open space, but instead Blizzard put in a ice cream boat, and other too much activity for something that should be a distant mysterious land. It's like Blizzard was saying "Thousand Needles is BOOORRRIINNNGG!!!! Lets put ice cream, cultist, machines and EVERYTHING in this zone!!!!!!!" but sometimes "boring" is a good thing.
shimmering flats is literally a dustbowl people praise for good exp but can't wait to get out of because it's too boring and the quest literally have you run laps around the dust bowl
I think so, at least. Even though the original Cataclysm was a long time ago, when you say Classic WoW, I think of WoW as it was before Cata. Before the world overhaul. I massively disliked how much the world changed with Cata and have never felt the need to revisit that expansion. Classic, to me, is everything up to and including Wotlk. Others are free to disagree and have their own opinions, ofcourse and I'm sure there are many who welcome Classic Cata with open arms, but I won't be touching it. It's just not Classic anymore. And it begs the question, if Cata isn't the end of Classic, then what is? How many years do we go back before an expansion stops being considered 'Classic?' Is MoP next? Are we going to relive WoD (God, please no. Once was enough torture)? Legion? Like where does it end? To me, it already feels like it's gone beyond the limits of what Classic should have been. If they include expansions beyond Cata, that'll only get worse. But Blizz is gonna do what they're gonna do and there ain't shit I can do about it, other than decide if I'll be playing it or not. And in this case, it's an easy 'not'. Cata is not Classic, imo.
@@tu4764 Cataclysm is a better WotLK in every single way, with a few exceptions. Cata has only 3 raid tiers, instead of 4 and it doesn't have an equivalent to WotLK's 10 Man Normal raid difficulty(LFR is NOT it). Class design peaked in Cataclysm until SL and DF. Dungeon and Raid mechanics and gameplay were brought to a whole new level of quality. Tier 11 and Firelands were some of the best raids ever. Cata had a dungeon tier for each raid tier and they were awesome. Heroic dungeons were awesome(both pre and after nerf, they were just awesome). Cata had 10 man raiding as fully relevant and amazing. PVP was also amazing and peaked until SL and DF. Talents were finally polished(though you were locked in a tree, which can easily be fixed). Leveling 1-60 was great, I thought I'd hate it back in the day, but it was actually great.(Maybe they can make it harder numerically). 80-85 was also very good. We got the Molten Front, which was a great progressive open world activity.(WotLK had none). Tabard reputation was polished. Badges were polished into Justice/Valor The Guild system was great. Reforging was great. Not a big fan of transmog, but it is there. Glyphs were improved. All they have to do is add an Easy raid difficulty of Raid which would be after Normal dungeons, not Heroic, so that more casual players can enjoy them and they are set. A big plus would be if they added back the cut content in the form of a 4th raid tier(and more dungeons), then it'd be flawless.
I always loved cataclysm and what it did with the world’s zones, but I wish there was a follow up expansion at some point so the world wouldn’t forever be trapped in it.
I know Cataclysm had a lot of haters overall for some good reasons like content droughts but I've got a lot of nostalgia for the unique vibe of the expansion. You'd keep finding new stuff in old zones and share findings in guild chat, enter new zones that were directly connected to the old world and finally being able to explore everything with flying was fresh as heck.
Good video. I would add that blizzard not only killed TS, but he killed the pvp there too. The zone went dead after that rework. But i guess this zone was made thinking about Vash'j. Just like Wetlands for Alliance (mostly).
The Cataclysm quests of Thousand Needles were epic. Plus, you do a quest and you get a boat to ride in. To those complaining about the submerged zone, get yourself an ancona chicken.
I loved Cataclysm and wasn’t opposed to changes. What I didn’t like was Chromie time only letting you go as far back as TBC, dumb. I miss original Thousand Needles sometimes.
1k needles was always considerably lower than the zones around it. Its east side always bordered the ocean, just had the weird 'coastal mountains' so many classic zones had. Cata torn down alot of the coastal mountains and this case tore a hole in the side of the zone, letting the ocean in.
5:35 lol i remember in the wake of the sexual harassment scandal they extended the pants of that npc Daisy (which totally ruins the Daisy Duke easter egg btw). It reminds me in retrospective how ridiculous the whole thing was how the 2021 great sex purge served them now they can't even release a semi-decent game anymore. They might as well have put the original Daisy.
I do like what they did, but at the same time, 13+ years later, I kinda think the worlds due for another update. Not in terms of another cata level overhaul, but it does feel like there is a strange disconnect when this much time has passed, and the world is still devastated from the cataclysm. It would be really cool to see the evolution of how the regions have moved on since then, Thousand needles creating new towns and settlements with a boat network to transport goods and people around, a new collection of goverments forming, potentially showing how now there is less need for cooperation to survive, the differences between the goblin and gnomes start to show, leading to conflict over the future direction of the region, and control over its resources. Just feel its a major element missing in wow is putting some work into the current game to update regions over time. F for the people in northrend still under siege like 15 years later.
Just wish they would go through the zones and make the quests expansion independent. Let the zones focus on smaller regional issues that aren't really tied to much outside of a couple dungeons/raids. With so much of the old world stuck in Cata, it just feels weird. - I want to see Loch Modan with the dam fixed and the troggs mostly dealt with, but that means DArk Iron Rebels have taken over as the main threat of the region. - I want to see Azuremyst/Eversong not stuck in BC. Let them be altered so the quests aren't about crash landing/the recent destruction of silvermoon and are based on just maintaining borders against threats.
The thing is, if they just added this as a new zone on the east side of Badlands, it would have been really cool. But they took one of the most unique zones and gave us something so mediocre.
Leveling from 70 to 80 in wrath was actually so boring that I wont touch this game past BC ever again. Nothing but classic is actually wow. and trust me, leveling doesn't get "fun again" in cata, and neither does the end game. Its same of generic shit.
It's so funny to see people pretend cata leveling is new again when it was all there is from 2011 the past 13 years on retail. But at least you have option to go back to classic world both blizz servers and private servers too.
I was hoping to find a comment like this. I still play it mainly because of the story and that i want to do some achievements. There are guys out there that think that Cata, MOP are amazing lol :D If SOD by any chance becomes permanent i might start playing there. I am glad that i was able to experience Vanilla/TBC/WOTLK. Only Legion came close to those three
I loved Shimmering Flats at night. The feel, the music...I miss it very much.
As someone who hasn't played in that zone for ages, and didn't know, I am sad. You've made a lvl 70 death knight cry, I hope you're proud of yourself.

Bro the entire zone was occupied by centaur and bussing with wildlife. I think you got your memories wrong.
shimmering flats is literally a dustbowl people praise for good exp but can't wait to get out of because it's too boring and the quest literally have you run laps around the dust bowl
also the old shimmering flats has a race track with BLEACHERS and more npc's hanging around than towns in eastern kingdoms
I will never miss the shimmering flats quest which is literally half the zone
shimmering flats is cool tho
Have to love that Daisy the race starter girl is now the bartender!
BTW When you do the speedbarge quests, you get a boat and a diving suit that boosts swim speed, making travel WAY faster.

I do agree. I loved the original TS and if you played on a PVP server, the pvp in TS was always a blast.
What no whale shark corpse? :( was one of things I was looking forward to hearing you talk about.
Did the torches, along the road, in 1000 Needles ever stop smouldering?
They really should have used it as prep for Vashjir and had 50% of the quests done under water. To much was done on the islands/bluffs.
Thank you love this video!
