Probably the best film ever made IMHO, in an edgy relevant way, definitely the best musical. Glorious and wondrous, easy to enjoy on first viewing but full of depth.

Imagine real love - spring, green grass, flowers, fire and walk down to beautiful valley. Look here - dry grass , dead branch of the tree , remains of the fire-place, and view on scary volcano. This walk through is unbelivable, starting from the first seconds with hands, it goes in anti-love way (e.g. 0:18 cigarette in hand). And music... almost funeral march, not light romantic, but heavy and tragic
Ngl, it looks and sounds very cheesy to me, but that transition slaps!! The editing (visual and musical) seems really cool, and is probably the biggest reason I'll watch this movie apart from the cast.
After SMWS, WLEOSM is one of My favorites songs from the Annette soundtrack. This was a huge Challenge for Adam Driver singing while he's playing his role cuz he's so shy as many we know it, luckily, Marion Cotillard was the expert who tries that he feels confortable while their filming that scene.
Adam is an introvert. He does not like large crowds or a lot of attention. But he's not shy. He will make his point bluntly to anyone that talks to him and he loves acting especially theater. He's not new to musical theater either. He is a Juilliard graduate after all.
The last part of the song is missing by the way. And it's lovely 3rd version of the refrain! She's walking barefoot and there's tons of poison oak around.. the music sounds great, but the poison oak rash she might get is all I could think about while watching this. Plus, they aren't wearing helmets on the motorcycle.. this is a horror movie scene.
Recklessly dashing around on a motorcycle at night with no helmets on is just part of the greater nightmare of all the dangerous things that develop in this film.
Only in France could a movie like this be made. Watch "Call My Agent" which is not so fictionalized; the business here is all about the "intellectual auteur" creating his personal statement (read selfish) rather than providing what most people would consider entertainment. This looks as ridiculous as the Jaques Demy films of the 1960s. I'll watch it only for the music of Sparks. I also don't understand how what either of these actors is doing can be considered "singing".

He sings so badly... the story is so flat (as they meant with that silly song)... but such a great movie. Really shows that a masterpiece isn't just its poor choice of *every aingle thing,* but also the film as a whole
The whole movie's lyrics are description of the scene we're seeing and what's happening, not much poetry, too "intellectually" written movie, and the lyrics probably weren't written by a native english speaker. We laughed a lot during the movie, it has such a big meme potential

The lyrics being so plain when the direction of the movie doesn't allow for such different styles mixed together, points to an overthought movie, but at least puts the responsibility on Carax. The movie is like a mashup of three great ideas, two genres at the same time. Too much for one poignant story. Plus, the orchestral music is barely worked on... Chords with permanent strings, a piano, and that's half of the music, almost like a MIDI file that's smoother Edit : Too intellectual for anything. Overthought. Fits France and Cannes, but it's ultimately something that makes the work easier and the movie lose purpose.
This is a more experimental side of Sparks, and not the best introduction to their music- if you’re looking for more conventional song structures/arrangements (but still with an eccentric flair), try Kimono My House or No. 1 in Heaven, two entertaining works of glam rock and synth pop, respectively. Annette is in the same vein as their early 2000’s works, Lil’ Beethoven and Hello Young Lovers, both of which were heavily influenced by minimalist composers and feature much of the same repetitive chants and orchestral-style backing that Annette does. Those are the ones to avoid if you hated the movie lol, but I believe their style is versatile enough that there’s something there for everyone, even if it’s just one song or album.
The reviews are so polarizing for this film it seems to be either a 2/10 or a 9/10 to people with not much inbetween. I am looking forward to a UK release though.

I thought the music was terrible and I’m glad I was spared by the music of The Sparks before this. Film is pretty terrible too🥲
