When looking back at George Best's career, it's impossible not to wonder what might have been had he not been consumed by alcoholism. Yet for many neutrals, at his Best, he was the best. He became a superstar with his one-man demolition of Benfica in 1966 but his crowning moment arrived against the same side two years later, when he inspired Manchester United to a first-ever European Cup triumph. With the game tied at 1-1 in extra-time, Best embarked upon a mazy run that ended with him rounding the goalkeeper before tapping into an empty net (after initially considering heading the ball in on the goal-line!). United ultimately romped to victory and Best was subsequently named the European Footballer of the Year.

What used to make people scratch their heads in those days was the referees allowing European teams get away with such terrible fouls.
Best was nearly kicked off the pitch in this game and I remember other matches where the refs were so biased I’m amazed any players didn’t break bones,the refs were no protection.

He and i have a similar style of play. Always on the attack. I would have passed a bit more than he has in this, and i dont typically attempt to draw the foul, but a lot of the passes i did see and a lot of patterns he runs are similar to what i would choose. Part of why hes my favorite. I played like this before i knew about him.
