BNC#6: John Steenhuisen - Vote like your life depends on it to avoid ANC/EFF/MK ‘Doomsday’ coalition

- John Steenhuisen, leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the opening keynote speaker at BNC#6, delivered a very simple message to delegates and attendees. It's the Multi-party Charter (MPC) versus the "Doomsday Coalition" of the ANC, EFF and MK party in South Africa's 2024 election. Steenhuisen highlighted the great work done and progress made by other MPC parties, lauding the IFP's recent manifesto launch, and emphasised the collaborative spirit of the MPC. But he also warned of the dire consequences of a "Doomsday Coalition" national government, citing the crisis in Knysna as a key example. The DA leader concluded his speech with a rallying call to vote against the "corrupt, maladministrators, crooks and cadres" and for the unity and good governance of the MPC. Steenhuisen's closing words, "On the 29th of May, vote soberly and vote like your life depends on it, because in this election it really does," underscore the watershed nature of South Africa's 2024 elections. - Patrick Kidd

May I suggest you have volunteers to help ferry voters to polling stations. My late mother & my brother & I were fortunate enough to be within walking distance of our ward polling station but my mom became increasingly reliant on friends for lifts as she neared her 80's. She & I would take a slow walk when they were unable to help.

I think you are making a mistake Pat. The best way to truely avoid the dooms day coalition is to vote ANC. That way coalition governments doesn't even become a subject matter. But if you remove ANC from power you can get anything, you can get what you didn't bargain for. The voters must vote about what the Constitution stipulates and requires from all political parties, vote with your conscience and not with your emotions. Compare the period from 1965 to 1992 and FR 1992 to 2024, a country we created as professional people which does not exist anymore because of cadre deployment, affirmative action and BEEE. Also compare the income of politicians versus minimum wages, pension payout and grants to people. Also medical care at hospitals and clinics nationwide, service delivery and promises by politicians!

What do you expect the DA to do exactly? The DA has no control over the police, they have no control over VAT & tax, no control ober rising food prices, they have no control over BEE laws (that are actively excluding coloureds and indians). The DA cant just take state owned land to build housing and schools. The DA's job is to clean the streets, fix potholes, create jobs in the area, promote tourism etc etc. Go to JHB and see if its easier to get a job there? You wont even make it to the interview because of the potholes. The DA is the country's best hope, we havent given them a chance to proof themselves on a national level yet. The DA has done good with how little they have. They only get a small fraction of tax money that are made in the WC, the rest is looted on a National level.

South Africans need to change the political landscape by not voting for old political parties because they all have nothing new to offer SAns. The people need to move away from party loyalty to voting for independent candidates who are not funded by lobbyists to serve their interests. We need leaders who will put SA’s interests first and solve the country’s socioeconomic problems. My concern is that any coalitions formed amoung the old political parties will spend more time in dispute’s which will drive more SAns into poverty.
The multi part charter is our only choice and voting for anyone of them will give them more say on the long run

DA and its multi charter has raised many questions about their intentions? Their divisive politics on the Ukraine and Palestine issue and by its political agitation by inviting US and UK as observers has aroused many doubts among ordinary SAns. DA lost me as a voter because they appear to have become the puppets of western ideology. DA and it multi charter must realise the geopolitical world has shifted. The unipolar world order is over, and therefore we need pragmatic solutions which will lead SA in multilateral relations and cooperation.

It is mind-boggling that almost half of the population can not see and process the cause and consequences of what is happening in SA and globally in basic politics, economy, and technological developments.

It is 30 years later. In 30 years whole Europe was rebuild from demolition effects of 2-nd war, half was under communist/ socialist rules, you could hardly know, what is happening behind your borders, very few were given passport to travel, no acces to information....and very few were "stupid"
They don't understand politics at all. They have no idea how a country is run. They don't even know where the money the government for everything, comes from. Those huge sums that are stolen mean nothing to them.
