Juneteenth should be a day for blacks to boycott American business and system! Keep our money that day! Or month!!! Really make a month holiday! They give a day we take a month! All about teaching unity

This class was used to set the record straight in my mind. It is an qamazing study and commentary on Juneteeth. I stand to be corrected about my attitude and perspective regarding the New National Holiday. Much respect to these keeper of culture. Big THANK you to my brother and friend Bavu Blakes
My grandmother didn’t “allow” us to celebrate July 4th . We celebrated “thanksgiving” on Saturday, not Thursday. On Juneteenth we didn’t BBQ and celebrate in typical fashion. My grandmother took us to the library or to museums. 🙏🏽💜✊🏽✊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Whether Live or on replay, these classes really are essential viewing for ALL BLACK PEOPLE. I'm in the UK via the Caribbean and this is just as applicable to me, as well as understanding the unique history of my African American brethren ✊🏾
Chile, I just had an enlightening conversation with my African Lyft driver, who trained as an engineer in Africa. (Let that marinate, for a minute). He does not understand the connection between the influx of weapons in poorer neighborhoods, our lack of community, and the careful orchestration of all this by WS. I referred him to this class. I don't speak as well as I write. Dr. Carr and Professor Hunter can enlighten him better than I can.
We have to get back to passing down "our" ways of respecting and honoring our elders, and ourselves. This was refreshing and enlightening to watch. Thank you so much for sharing thought and shedding light❤.
In Tulsa, Ok the Black community used the celebrations to raise money to build the Greenwood Cultural Center that house the destruction of Black Wall Street Business and Community District.
I've always enjoyed history! Dr. Carr brings our history to life for me💜 Thanks Dr. Carr for enlightening me on My State, My City / Houston and Galveston💜 Thanks to all the Elders and Ancestor's. I choose to remember 💜 Happy Juneteenth Family 2021💜
Hi Professor Hunter, just to wish brothers and sisters across the water who observe this day a happy Juneteenth, and go and reclaim your ancestors time as Dr Carr so eloquently explained why, and how! Peace & Love from London
As Dr. Carr says there is an entire universe of Emancipation Day (such as Juneteenth) celebrations in the diaspora formal and legalized by the respective governments . America's Social Structure is behind with recognizing the humanity of Africans as usual. Here's a list (no doubt not exhaustive): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emancipation_Day
I love this Class, you brought tears to my eyes thinking about my Harlem Elders and how growing up we always said yes Ma'am and the times we had to remind and be reminded to Respect our Elders.
I want to thank my mentors Professor Hunter and Dr. Carr for sharing and expressing the truths about the chronology of JUNETEENTH becoming a federal holiday. I was so disgusted when I heard the news, because this is ours. My first disturbing thought was of a little blonde haired girl being crowned Miss JUNETEENTH. But I then thought of the opportunity we will have to impart wisdom and show the way for Blacks around the nation even that have no context for the celebrations, reflection, or to Pause on that day to plan our next move. Peace be with you all
"Be Elder Worthy" in this day and age, you've said a mouthful! Yesterday my 27 yr., who is stationed in Germany, called someone auntie, I was like wow, we have no relations in that area. She said mommy she's from Togo, I immediately knew this person is watching over my baby for her to call her "auntie". My girls even at their age knows to show respect.
Can't wait to listen to your commentary Professors Carr and Hunter. I know that it will be 100% enlightening and nothing but the truth! ❤🖤💚 B1 💯 24/7/365
This is a delightful conversation. Integration should have been about respecting us...Yet ,.we still are not treated with full respect as long as we have been on this continent.
"Integration should have been about them respecting us". That's wishful thinking and hindsight. We did not have enough power or the numbers to drive that respect. It felt more like learning to live in an integrated world, yet not losing oneself - and remembering the fertile ground your parents and community had given you despite the odds. I remember going from my old black jr. high school with friends I had been in school with since the 4th grade to my first day in my new integrated high school with 25+ white kids in my US History class with me being the only black kid. Oh, and a white teacher too - the first one I ever had in my life. I knew that my black teachers at my old school cared about my success and health, but would my new white ones? It was more about adapting, finding out what success looked like, and proving oneself everyday.. If there was anything in the integration experience relating to "respect" it was in showing that you could work just as hard and show them that you could compete. When I had to take geometry over in summer school after the 11th grade my mother was not happy :-).
Thanks to y'all, as always. What a glorious way to celebrate this day, honor the ancestors and remember our responsibilities. Blessings to all. 🙌🏿❤🤲🏿❤🙏🏿

Please, give people time to bask in the meaning of the juneteenth day. Thank you for your teaching to help us understand the importance of the day or time frame. People just don't know about it, just like most didn't hear or know about the Tulsa massacre. Don't give up on us, please continue to spread the truth as we learn.
I respect the elders, but a lot of "elders" aren't acting like elders... they think age is everything especially in the family structure. We all have to be an example of what we want.
Praise God for you two. I love you and I especially love what God has given you, great knowledge and wisdom and Love for your Black sisters and brothers. ❣ Love, Joy, and Peace forever and forever God Bless you Always❣😊🙏🏽💖🙏🏽
Dr. Carr, will you touch on the "Colonial Marines" soon? Maybe you and Prof. Hunter could do a talk on them along with the Star Spangled banner in honor of this "Settler's Project" of Independence Day. Thanks and this talk was excellent as usual!
Capitalizing on our plight. Naw, they (politics) will make more monies on this addition to the off days with selling parafanelia pertaining to Juneteenth.
Beautiful class! Loved the comment about being "elder worthy". Nothing looks more ridiculous than someone behaving as though they were two or three generations younger than they are. Truly, there is no fool like an old fool. lol
I am a paralegal in Florida. When I tell you that two seconds after the bill was signed into law, courts were posting closures schedule that started yesterday!
I was sitting in my car and a group of teenagers walked by just letting the curses fly. Our generation would never curse when an adult was near, a woman/girl was around. We held doors, helped ladies with their bags across the street, said yes ma'am, no sir. I see grown men let the door go when women walk behind them or men let a woman hold the door. I can go on and on.
Thank you, Prof. Hunter & Dr. Carr, for a CLEAR explanation to those of us who thought we knew what this holiday is really about. SELF-DETERMINATION and reclaiming our time for activities that help free us...
I know Ava, I remember her as young lady. She is the granddaughter of 100 year young, activist, Dallas historian Eva McMillan. They are a beautiful, strong and proud family!
Not sure if it's still going but I remember after In high school my mom sent me to Dunbar for free piano lessons..in Bmore..I didn't realize it until much later that the lessons was free because it was money set aside yearly to pay for lessons for any black child who wanted to learn.yet it was only me & 3 other kids there..it was a shame & a waste
I agree wholeheartedly with you Dr. Carr. We should make this holiday what WE want it to be- to advance the case for our liberation, to educate our children on our history. I love it. Just as I use Kwanzaa, Malcolm X's birthday (we have an awesome weekend celebration here in ATL for Malcolm's bday, Black History month etc! This year (2021) on Juneteenth there were celebrations everywhere in the ATL- like never before- from Stone Mountain to East Point!. It rained all day and people still came out with their children, even to outdoor events, in groves! The 7 yr old with me learned about the Buffalo soldiers- a group dressed as Buffalo Soldiers had a re-enactment/display! It was a beautiful day! #Juneteenth: The Struggle continues! Thanks Dr. Carr (#Howardforever) and Prof Hunter!

Now we should be fighting for real reparations not a study, and definitely not voting rights because we have not achieved economic equality. Love you both!
Hos can you have power if you do not vote? I want you to ask yourself and tell others once you understand, Why do white people fight so hard to keep black people from voting? Oh... yes, it's a reason.
When an elder enters the room Men are required to stand until the elder sits down. Same with women. Home training is a must but an entire generation lost this because of the onset of crack. Make no mistake, Black folk pushed our selves back chasing that shit.
Dr. Carr encouraging the youth to go talk to their elders. #respect #etiquette. Prof Hunter said Be elder worthy! Whew!! Y’all bring the smoke every week! Thank you “not bonnets and pajamas”.

The story of Juneteenth is the Story of the Governance structure! 💟 Dr. Carr ✊🏾
I may not celebrate Juneteenth but I will commemorate it. It's renewed my interest in virgin islands history particularly around the slave rebellions.
Karen, everyone does not know how to speak to an elder, as a nursing manager, my reports did not know how to address our elder patients. I was called into a situation in my clinic, because one of younger reports called an elder Black woman for her doctor visit out of the waiting room by her first name. OMG, the woman got to the room and asked for the manager. I had to do a class for the entire staff ( mixed), on how to address elderly Black people, NEVER by first name unless given permission. That young lady almost lost her job that day.
I could tell stories learned from watching my elders.
That is very true. I had to inform some non-Black medical assistant/nurses on how to address our elders.
I learned about Juneteenth when I moved to Minneapolis in '92 where there was an annual Juneteenth festival.
