    These are engines that have definitely grown on me. The SD60E 911 unit was stationed up here in Manassas VA for a few weeks moving rock trains for a large rock company. I was lucky enough to have seen her a few times. Though now it shows considerable wear, it was still a sharp looking unit.

  • @thedwaynerailfans
    @thedwaynerailfans 2 года назад +2

    the SD60E indeed does have a funny looking cab
    But its design is vitally important
    It was to meet up with FRA's current widecab standards for crash worthiness and to keep crews safer in an accident compared to a standard cab
    it was also rebuilt to make up for some of the failures the SD60 suffered trying to make up for what it failed in the catastrophic SD50
    the rebuild was terminated because iirc, it was deemed a waste of time and money once 2017 rolled around, especially since NS had grew such a strong interest in the DC to AC traction conversion program, which sidelined typical updates to a standard cab that only got a new cab but no AC traction motors
    in all honesty, the SD60E does look good, but it doesnt do too bright in performance as NS had hoped, which is another reason why they stopped the program, especially since iirc the plan was to rebuild every SD60. But it still can get the job done, and is definitely by far better than the miserably failed GE version of the SD60E, the C40-8.5W

    Unfortunately for me I live near Pan Am's district 3 where roughly 2/3 of the road freights are Pan Am Southern trains, so NS locos lead. But because there is a ~15 mile section where the MBTA shares the tracks, units must be equipped with ACSES PTC, and the only compatible units are a handful of SD60Es. So most trains have one to three of those units.

    I’ve grown to like the SD60E a lot overtime. NS’s rebuilding programs are amazing with what they turn out with. I’ve also seen that they’re rebuilding some of their SD40-2s into SD40-3s. Even if those aren’t gonna be real SD40-2s, they will still live on for years to come.
    Locomotives like the GE BQ23-7 however? Is no acception. It was just plain ugly, especially when CSX had them in that ugly dark blue and grey paint scheme.

    In My opinion, I think it would be Great if we had a Cowl variant of this locomotive. The EMD SDF60E would be its classification.
    Also, the SD70ACC is essentially just an SD70ACE but without the Ugly large radiator grill, which makes it better. It too must have a cowl variant, and it should be called the SDF70ACC.
    There could also be ECO versions of the Cowl units. The SDF60E-ECO, and the SDF70ACC-ECO.
