  • Hello and welcome to my review of Forbidden Rites: A Necromancer's Manual of the Fifteenth Century by Richard Kieckhefer (In the Magic in History series). This book was a deep dive into a Munich manuscript currently housed in the Bavaria State Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek) that was used as a magicians guide in the late middle ages.
Special thanks for the recommendation to:

Thanks for this! I find this element of history (the belief/practice of magic) fascinating. I read a book for my "history of early science and technology" class titled "the Fated Sky" which talks about the history of astrology. I won't get too into it in case it seems interesting to you, but there are similar themes regarding polarizing perspectives on 1. whether it did work and 2. if it is believed legitimate, whether it should it be practiced, who should practice it, and in what contexts was it viewed as appropriate/acceptable.
Meanwhile, I have added the entire series associated with the book you reviewed to my wish list and either I will acquire them piece by piece or after winning the lottery (that I don't play haha). Cool pick!

Thank you for your comment! I'm glad you found a new series (Magic in History) to look into - I also took a look at the titles after reading thi sbook and there were many that seemed interesting! I will also be adding "The Fated Sky" to my list of books to read. I am particularly interested in the way magic seemed to walk the fine line between accepted / tolerated in some cases and demonic and unnatural in other. Thanks again for the comment and support!

This sounds so interesting! I know it sounds ignorant, but I was somehow a little surprised this actually existed…though I’m not sure why it surprised me.

I assumed (also) that all these sort of texts would have been burned or destroyed when found, so I too was surprised! This was a recommendation someone left me in a comment on another video of mine, and I'm glad they did - I learned so much! :) Thanks for the comment!
