So happy you found the video helpful and happy repotting with your Euphorbia trigona, thanks so much Ian for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic new week XXXX
I totally agree. Just tap them out which works fine. I would never put a cactus in a plastic pot as the roots rot off more easily, clay pots all the way.
My husband and I grew three cereus cacti from cuttings in pots and wanted to transplant them in our yard. Your video was the best I found on the internet. Your visuals and explanations were extremely helpful. I didn't need to break the pot I had leftover bubble wrap I used in addition to the newspaper. It worked like a charm. Thank you and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Excellent job and I love your accent!
@inside outside upside downside haha yes so true :-D I am a Silhillian :-D I still haven't lost my Brummie accent even though I have been living in Ireland 14 years haha :-D XXXX
Hi there Jason :-) Thanks for watching + for the questions, yes it is possible to save a clay pot if you can gently loosen the soil around the edges of the pot first, but I always find by doing this you can damage the roots as the roots tend to cling to the clay + I find it safer + easier to break the pot. When re potting to a bigger pot I always find it best to transfer it to just the next size up as cacti can be very prone to rotting if they are kept in too big of a pot than CONTINUED
Just started collecting cacti, amazing luck, I have been given 25 very large and tall cacti so I have bought a greenhouse dedicated to the plants and they all need repotting so your video will be very usefull. Many thanks from Tony in bedfordshire.
Tony Smith Hi Tony :-) Thank you so much for your lovely comment :-) That is fantastic that you have been given 25 cacti, that is wonderful and even better that you have a greenhouse too that you can keep them in, happy growing Tony, thanks so much for watching and sending you much love and happiness from Ireland XXXXXXX
Hi Lyn: Using newspaper is such a perfectly effective and simple idea I only wish I would have seen your video sooner! (been pricked through gloves many times) I really enjoy your videos and can listen to you talk all day. It also absolutely amazes me that in rain soaked Ireland you can maintain such a magnificent cacti collection. You really know your stuff. Thank you and keep up the good work.
***** Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment :-) I agree gloves are hopeless with the spines, they go straight through them and get stuck on them, soooo painful LOL! Yes growing these Desert plants are a real challenge here in Ireland with all the rain and damp air LOL! I often dream of living in a warm and dry sunny climate where I can grow them all outdoors in the garden instead of behind glass and in the house, but then I think part of the challenge and enjoyment of growing these plants is keeping them healthy and happy despite the conditions :-) Thanks so much for watching and have a MAGNIFICENT day ahead today :-) XXXX
This was very helpful, and interesting video. I am glad I took the time to watch. I learned how to transplant my cactus with out getting injured,or damaging the plant. Thank you for sharing.
I inherited a super old (more than 20yrs I guess) cactus and Jade mix in a rectangular plastic pot. Though lovely and healthy, the cactus spines is a pain when being touched most esp kids. You gave me an idea how to separate and repot my plants. I will try when I have time this spring, fingers crossed I will do good!

Super great video. The best I've seen on repoting cacti. I've been using old towels, instead of news paper. I use the towel as a hammock to support a tall cacti. The tape around the pot, is VERY smart. Thanks again for Your great videos. SAL.

Nice job!!! My two catus plants have been in their pots easliy 4 years so I'm thinking it is time for a new home. Your example is what I was thinking of doing, but never thought about scrunching newspaper to help the plant and placing cardboard between the stems. Thank you for this video. Well, it’s official. I now understand why plastic is preferred. I was repotting this morning from 3 inch terra cotta to 4 inch pots and was greeted by a mass of roots clinging to the walls of the pots! I thought of you and quickly decided that plastic was the way to go. Next repotting should be much easier...but I’m not looking forward to having to repot the rest of my collection. Yup, you guessed it. All are currently in terra cotta pots. Bleh!
Hi Kevin, Clay pots can be such a pain due to the roots clinging to the sides, and I used to love clay pots as they look so nice and they dry out faster but decided that plastic is better due to the roots sticking to the clay, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and PLANT POWER happiness and have a wonderful Friday XXXX
I am absolutly in love with that round cactus you got there! What on earth is it? I have 10 cacti/ succulensucculents myself and currently I'm trying to save my Eve's Pin from a bought of overwatering. I thought watering my plants once a week every Sunday was okay and Sangria ( Eve's Pin ) started getting wrinkly. I thought it may have been from being underwatered, but I still watered her once a week. Turns out an Eve's Pin needs water once every 10 - 14 days! I let her and Mister Harry, ( He is a cat us with four nubs that was getting swollen and his soil has not drying out thanks to the soil and being in a glazed pot ) I let them both dry their soil out. Mister Harry is no longer swollen but Sangria my Eve's Pin is a little mushy and wrinkled. Not discolored wich is a good sign. Right now I have her in a dark place for a day or two hoping she'll become solid again and We'll work out those wrinkles soon. :/ But yes, what is that delightfully round Cacti called? XD

Hi Lynn, Just found your website what a lovley cheerful girl you are. I will watch you more now. Hi there :-) Thanks so much for your WONDERFUL comment :-) Yes most liquid houseplant feeds are perfectly safe to give to cacti, I would use it at half strength though, I usually use chempak cactus feed or baby-bio or a liquid tomato feed and use it at half strength than they recommend for normal plants :-) Sending you much love and happiness from Ireland :-) XXXX
Finally a very good instruction video and so much good energy that just made my day even better :-) thank you very much. Fantastic Vid Lyn,full of top tips. . . .You may have covered this in another Video but plastic or clay pots. . .You use both so doesn't it matter which pot to use? . . .I use clay pots for my Sweet Peppers ect because you have to make sure the roots don't burn
So happy you loved the repotting video Paul :-D yes I love to use both clay and plastic, I find the clay pots are great for the top heavy plants as it gives them a bit of added weight, I love to use clay pots for the cacti that have tuberous roots too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
Hi Michael :-D if the cacti are still very small, I always leave them in the same pot until they are much bigger, if the cacti are a lot smaller than the size of the pot, I make sure that I am extra careful with the watering, and only water around the base of the cactus and not the whole of the soil in the pot, you can transplant them into a smaller pot but when cacti are very young it may be best to leave them in the same pot even if the pot is bigger than ideal for them, and be extra careful with the watering, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

I used clay pots to repot a barrel cactus for years until it got to big for me to take indoors in the Canadian winter. Whenever I repotted I would always put a largish piece of broke a clay pot over the drain hole. That way when I went to remove it for repotting I could push a stick or whatever up the drain hole and tap the plant out. I also did it when it was bone dry so it had shrunk a bit in the pot. Worked well!

thanks for the videos. I have 2 questions...with the terracotta pot - do you have to break it? couldnt you just pull it off like the plastic one? Shame to waste a terracotta pot. And also your next size pots are not much bigger than the old one, I think you said leave a 1 inch gap.....Could you go a bit bigger with the next size up? Is there any harm re-potting to a much bigger pot? thanks!

A faster method of filling the sides is to use a flexible sheet of hard plastic, add some your soil, bend, lift and slide the soil off along the sides. Do this all around the edges and tamp. Repeat until desired depth of soil is achieved.
Hi , I am new to all this but have just bought a few cactus from Ikea but notice they are planted in a peat based compost......would it be a good idea to re pot them into a cactus soil mix that you have done a video on ,and should I water them in as well.......great RUclips channel by the way......Mark..👍
Hi Mark :-D welcome to the wonderful world of growing these amazing plants, thats wonderful you have bought a few cacti from IKEA, they are great for plants and always good quality and great prices too, Yes its best to change the soil in the pots as peat is not the best for cacti, its ok short term but over time it can compact the roots and peat dries like cardboard and its always difficult to re wet peat, yes now Spring is as good as here I would repot them into cactus soil and then leave them totally dry for the first 10 days before starting to water them again, good luck with your wonderful new cacti and thanks so much for watching, sending you lots of love and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXXX
Thanks very much, Lyn. I have a very tall (70cm) Euphorbia which needs repotting. I'm thinking of using this as an opportunity to provide some sort of support. Please can you advise on the best form and size of support? I'm also worried about putting the stake through the root ball. Please comment.
Hi there, thats wonderful you have a large Euphorbia, its good to support them and I like to use bamboo canes to support any top heavy or over hanging plants, I use garden tie wire wrapped around the plant to support the plant onto the canes, you would be best to insert the cane/s into the new pot first, and then quarter fill the pot with the cane/s inside with the new succulent soil, then you can place your Euphorbia into the pot and soil and then tie the Euphorbia onto the cane/s with the garden tie wire, then fill up the rest of the pot and rootball, this will prevent you having to insert the cane through the rootball, you can use 3-4 bamboo canes made as a bit of a trellis support, Good luck with repotting your Euphorbia, and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching XXXX

Hi Debra :-D yes I have an Eve's needle cactus, although mine has never flowered yet, they can be difficult to get to flower, but they love plenty of sunshine and monthly fertilising in Spring and Summer, I like to use a weak strength fertilizer for tomatoes for my cacti as the extra potassium gives them a boost for flowering but these Eve's Needle cacti will usually flower when they get to be over 2-3 feet high, and it will be wonderful to see flowers on ours in the near future :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Northern California for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX
Hi, nice video. I do have a cactus in a pot but I want to transfer it to the soil. Can I do it? My cactus looks like the second cactus you repot in the video.
Hi Arthur :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment :-) Unfortunately because i have only ever grown cacti in pots indoors and in the greenhouse because of living in Ireland, I really wouldn't know what to suggest for transplanting them outdoors in the garden as it can depend on many different things like the climate and where you live and the soil etc, so sorry I can't be any help with you on that one, but if you are blessed to be living in a warmer climate and drier climate you can certainly grow them outdoors in the garden if they are planted up in a well drained sandy soil :-) thanks so much for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness from Ireland for a wonderful Wednesday ahead XXXX

@@desertplantsofavalon awesome thank you so much. I've had one of those for a good 7-8 years and it's gotten huge. All the apps ive used to identify it have called out a different species. Re-potting it is going to be a tricky job. It came with 3 cactus in one, do you recommend I split them up or can they live together? Any tips you have would be appreciated, it's about six feet tall.
@@dm9363 WOW thats amazing at 6 feet tall, I would leave them together, I think because they are tall and very mature it can be very difficult to split them up as their roots will have grown together, I have two in the same pot that are about 6 feet tall too and they are doing really well, XXXXX

Hello, how are you? I bumped into your videos a while ago, and i must say i find your energy very contagious! :) As for your cacti videos they are very interesting, but i must say and please don't take this in a negative way, but i find your cacti mix too organic! Personally i believe you should keep them in a much more mineral mix, as the more organic (cacti mix) normally sold is problematic even if you had a bit of perlite! The main issue is the peat present in the mix. You see after a while of being dry, it is painfully hard to get it wet again and that means it can get so hard and dry that unless you submerge the pot in water for quite a bit, areas in the pot will never get moist, the water will go just straight down to the bottom of the pot, the compost will pretty much not retain much of it for the cactus to suck up, and although people keep telling us to water it until you see water come out of the bottom, if the peat it just to dry, that tip is useless!! If that doesn't happen then there's the risk that the peat present one day can keep you compost to wet for too long, and your cacti will rot, all it takes is watering it at the wrong time...I am sure we all been there... Also when re potting you should try and remove as much of the old compost as possible, so that in a few years you do not end up with cactus roots enclosed in rock hard dry peat! Not good for the pant at all! It could be something that could require some time to get used to, but i believe a more mineral mix is a better compost, and in time it will be even easier to control the watering/moisture in your Melocactus for instance! Also certain species don't like the acidity that peat brings, like certain kinds of Gymnocalycium. Hope you don't take this post as a negative one i am just trying to share some bits of research and experience with a fellow grower. Best regards!
Malvo0ovlaM Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the vids :-) Thanks for all your great advice, I really appreciate it and I would never take it as negative at all :-) as i am always appreciative of any advice other growers are willing to share :-) I have noticed that a lot of the peat based composts are a pain to re wet again and they tend to dry up like cement when it comes to watering them again, I have found a few of the John innes no 2 composts a lot better as they are more soil based rather than peat based like a lot of the other ones, and John innes soil based composts are the ones I use but I have noticed a lot of john Innes composts still use a lot of peat in their compost mixes, so i really appreciate your advice of a more mineral mix and will do a bit more experimenting and I will definitely be looking out for a soil based compost that doesn't use any peat in it :-) Thank you so much for your advice and sending you tons of love and Happy Growing from Ireland and have a wonderful week ahead XXXX :-)
heartfullofhappiness Indeed John Innes still uses peat, something i only found out recently (i don't have access to it). You could still use nº2 but to a less degree, like 20/30%, as going 100% mineral is indeed complicated, i know, because my transition wasn't very smooth and i ended up doing allot of mistakes. So basically 20/30% John, and the rest could be composed of mineral material like pumice, which works very well. From my understanding around your area (Ireland, England etc) people use it so i recon you should have little trouble finding it, although it could be expensive. Other things could be use just like random gravel/grit material, decomposed granite, crushed lava rock, or kitty litter! Yes kitty litter is also often used to great results! You could also use a bit of sand, but not too much because with time it could create a crust after being constantly wet, and then drying up, just a wee bit. I would avoid using perlite because it has a nasty habit of floating to the surface. Also be aware that the big columnar ones like a bit more organics on their mix so i would use more than 20/30% on them. Try it out with a few plants for a year and see how it works out. You might need to fertilize them and water them a bit more than before but the risk of rot should be considerably less. Cacti are amazing plants, it's a shame normally people just think of them as "green things with spines". They are amazing...for instance do you know that a considerable amount of cacti possess a certain bacteria that dissolve rock and provide nutrition them? Quite amazing isn't it! Best regards
Malvo0ovlaM WOW! Thank you sooooo much for all your gread advice, that is so brilliant to know, you have been a real help and I will definitely check out using this on all my future repottings, i think using the 30% John innes no 2 and the rest of grit and pumice, the pumice i have seen here in the garden centres, I have also noticed that perlite seems to float to the surface when I water them and gathers all at the top, so its definitely not the best, i have heard that cat litter is brilliant too, WOW! I never knew that a lot of cacti possess a certain bacteria that dissolves rocks and provides nutrition, thats incredible :-) Thanks so much for all the advice and info :-) Sending you an abundance of love and Happy growing from Ireland and have a wonderful day ahead XXXXX

When re potting to a bigger pot I always find it best to transfer it to just the next size up as cacti can be very prone to rotting if they are kept in too big of a pot than CONTINUED
have you ever tried tapping the clay pot all around its circumference with a rubber mallet? It works fine AND you save the pot !!
That's how I do it also. If it still seems stuck I stick my finger or a stick into the drain hole & push it out. I'm not wasting my pots..
Just started collecting cacti, amazing luck, I have been given 25 very large and tall cacti so I have bought a greenhouse dedicated to the plants and they all need repotting so your video will be very usefull. Many thanks from Tony in bedfordshire.

Super great video. The best I've seen on repoting cacti. I've been using old towels, instead of news paper. I use the towel as a hammock to support a tall cacti. The tape around the pot, is VERY smart. Thanks again for Your great videos. SAL.

But yes, what is that delightfully round Cacti called? XD
Its a Ferocatus setispinus cactus haha :-D and I have had this plant for many years now :-D about 20 years

Hey Lyn! One question. What do you do with really small cacti with a pot that are maybe 2 and a half or 2 inches wide?

Question did I see in a previous video a Eves Needle? If so please tell me how toget it to flower. I reside in Northern California.

As for your cacti videos they are very interesting, but i must say and please don't take this in a negative way, but i find your cacti mix too organic!
