The cactus soil that I use has cinders, perlite, pumice, processed forest products, processed softwood bark, compost and composted worm castings. I do see some volcanic rocks in it as well. I add more pumice for rot prone cactus.
After watching your video, I decided I needed to shop around for cactus and cactus soil. To my astonishment , I found 2 very good places and shopped very contentedly ! I’ve been shopping at the wrong places . Both had actual cactus soil mix ( which I bought) and the nursery had a very good cactus/succulent selection . So thanx for making me rethink my shopping strategies👍
Hi Ana, new subscriber here. I live in Las Vegas (41 years) in the NW part of the valley near 95/Cheyenne. I have just recently developed a keen interest in succulents, euphorbias, cacti and house plants. I have one cactus that I brought here from California when I moved here. It has given me many offspring. After watching several of your videos I'm now more interested in cacti. Since Plant World sold to Moon Valley nursery years ago we're left with very limited choices for finding plants. I look forward to more videos from you and sharing the love of plants along the way. (My daughter-in-law is Filipina from Pangopango.)
Hi Joan! It’s nice to meet a “neighbor” here on RUclips. I always go to Star Nursery as they are closer to me. Except their plants are not labeled. Yes like cactus because they are tough in our climate. Plus their flowers are beautiful. 🥰 Keep in touch, Joan! And hello to your daughter in law! 😉

I have learned a lot about cacti from watching your videos, I'm new to the addiction of keeping cacti, I've learned to identify some cactus by counting the ribs and how many spines per areole, your videos are amazing and very helpful, thanks.
Thank you for the great vid! I watched a guy the other day use a newspaper folded over several times and wrapped around the cacti to lift it out and also to hold it in place while repotting whilst only holding the newspaper “ends” that were pinched together on one side of the cacti (I hope that makes sense). Obviously wouldn’t probably work the greatest while trying to remove old medium with water if you were to get it wet.... but otherwise seemed to work well. Protected him from the needles and help prevent needle damage from him. Thought I’d share with you in case you or others wanted to try it sometime. Best wishes 🌱💕
Thank you for sharing that to us. I also use an old shirt or for the really mean spiny ones, an old pair of jeans to handle the cactus. I grab whatever I can to handle the cactus cause I’m such a cry baby when it comes to spines and glochids. 😂
OMG black gold thats so funny i used to use that brand of soil for other things... did not know it stil existed only found it at big lots. great vids TY
I never handle my cacti with gloves, and I'll tell you that I absolutely do get pricked. All the time. It's more about how much you can handle getting pricked rather than avoiding it, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with using gloves!
I wish the cactus mix I buy here looked like yours. Ours looks like regular potting soil /: And it’s humid here in Dallas so I’m making my own gritty mix following research that I did. Last spring I added perlite alone to the soil and it made a big difference with my succulents .
Yes, you should always adjust depending on your climate. Mine is so dry that I still add coco coir sometimes to my cactus mix. Plus I also use tera cotta pots. For you, more inorganic than organic is better. 🙂
Hi Ana! Beautiful collection of plants, especially the blue Melo and the Parodia buiningii. The soil you use looks so beautiful and organic. Thank you for sharing the wonderful tips on soil and it's amendment, I never get tired of those videos, as you always learn something new. From the garden city to you, have a fantastic weekend! Cheers and God bless.
Great video Ana, expertly done 😊 Absolutely love all those cacti you bought in your fall plant haul, those Melocactus! 😍 I like the colour of those terracotta pots too, and your soil mixture looks great. Thank you for sharing with us Ana, from Edith & myself, have a fantastic day 😊🌵☀️🌸🌼☕️
I tried so many soil brands and for the others I always had to add or remove items to make the soil acceptable to me. But this brand (not sponsored, I wish!) is the best so far. Someday I hope to be like you and make my own soil mix. 😃 But then again, I’m too lazy. Hahaha
Interesting potting mix here, Ana. I like learning other collectors’ mix. I love your pots too. ❤️ We only have one colour available here. Yours is a cooler colour tone. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
I think that they came planted in coco-perlite mix, i.e. a mix of perlite and coconut coir, not peat. The coconut is much better than peat. I also learned that from experience. Peat is harder to wet once dried, and tends to absorb rather than provide moisture when it is too dry. Peat also retains too much water, which is a problem in places with more precipitations, especially in winter (The Mediterranean are).
I don’t use gloves eathe😬 I have tweezers at my party station that helps a lot. One of my cactus it’s sort of by yellow color with Teenie tiny spikes on it and if you don’t get those out right away you will find them to pull!! They get Infected and you think that it’s going to get better but it doesn’t it just starts over again and over again and over again! I stay clear of that plant! I love your show and how you tell us how to do everything. It’s just a joy to watch it!
the worst plant for spikes i have grown is the ""Teddy bear cholla" Cylindropuntia bigelovii"". I don't have it anymore as it was to dangerous, my cat brushed up against it one day a branch fell of and got stuck to the cat
I heard that their mix is different based on which state produced them. I find that so confusing. One viewer told me his has no lava rocks and mostly peat moss.
Such a FANTASTIC video Ana :-D I really enjoyed watching you pot up these beauties, you have potted them all up so beautifully too :-D thanks so much for sharing and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle to Las Vegas for a wonderful Weekend ahead XXXXX
Great to see your large cactus nursery and the healthy plants. As far as my potting mix we seldom get ready to use potting mix in India. So I make my own with cocopit, riversand little broken pieces of coal and a liberal dose of perlite. Should we add any organic/inorganic manure in the potting mix for cactus?
Anna , I have one cactus that rot it’s probably because when I repot it I didn’t loosen the old soil . I just went ahead and repot it so maybe when I water it it didn’t penetrate the water could be the cause of the rot. Great video Anna next time when I repot my cactus I will use the same mixture . Thank you for sharing .
Hi dear friend Cactus Caffeine, great planting. You so talented. New friend here to support your great videos. Lets connected. Thanks so much for sharing.
I live in Riverside, California, and I'm not sure what other's suggestions mean when they say do or don't do something particularly in the autumn or spring as I think most of those suggestions come from people who live in wetter and cooler places. I've some succulents that are said to be particular about when to water and when not to water. Just how are the seasons, spring, autumn, winter, and summer for semi dessert where I live.?
Hi Ana, thank you for sharing your tutorial re-potting your cacti’s. I have difficulty when I had to re-pot mine and it’s very helpful learning your techniques. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving 💚🌵
Beautiful cacti Ana! I’m new to the hobby and struggling to find the perfect soil best for my climate. I only have about 100 desert type cacti now and going to stop buying until next spring, so I can see how they do this year. I am using the forbidden (according to many haha) Miracle Gro for cactus and succulents. So I guess I’ll see next how they do. Hopefully I won’t have to repot them all with some other soil mixture. I think terra cotta pots are perfect for cacti for both drainage and looks. Thank you for sharing these little beauties!!!
I live in a northern climate and tend to over water so I use terra cotta to promote quick drying. Works well for me. The trouble with miracle grow is it does hold moisture. Where I live and given my inclination to over water it will cause rot in rot sensitive varieties.
Hi Karen. 100 desert types, wow! I would love to see your collection. I used that brand of soil before. It is better than many other brands but the main thing I don’t like is that when it gets too dry (which happens often in my desert climate), it is very hard to get it wet again. The water would just sit on top of the soil for a long time before the soil absorbs it. But my cacti thrived in that soil, too with added perlite or pumice. 🙂 i hope all goes well for you and good luck this winter. 🙂🌵☕️
Hi Bill, thank you for your input. That is the reason why I use my left over Miracle Gro for my leafy/fleshy succulents because they like more water than cactus. 🙂 Cheers to terra cotta pot users! Hahaha. 🌵☕️😁
More beautiful plants Ana and I love those pots!😍 I need that kind of potting soil to avoid my plants from rotting. This makes me wanna get more cacti and agaves they are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing these great tips.👌🌴🌵💐💞💖😘
Hi Ana, how do you do? I was wondering if you can help me with this question. I am in Canada and here is very cold, would you please tell me or recommend what kind of soil should I use or buy for my cactus, succulents and rhipsalis. I use terra-cotta pots for all my cactus and succulents and I keep them in my south leave room. Please advise. Thank you so much for your videos.
Any well draining soil that has more inorganic than organic since your weather is usually cold and humid. You can start by buying a cactus soil from the store and just adjust accordingly
I have got some seeds and i have been trying to grow them but nothing happens the seeds are really small so i spread them out on the soil ,what am i doing wrong?
I am just starting my new hobby .i just got 6 catuses from home depo they dont have names ..so ill hunt for that ..i am in Staunton virginia ..in the shanadoah vally. It humid in the summer but not like the tidewater region where you have to be part fish to breath.i hope im successful inmy new hobbie..those gloves is what i need to get next. I will transplant then..
Wow! I’m thrilled to have a viewer from India. Thank you and welcome! Cheers from Las Vegas. 🙂🌵☕️ ... By the way, you should check out the RUclips channel The Desert Plant Diary. Carl lives in India. Tell him I sent you over. 😉
scott brady oh, that is a great gritty mix. I want to try adding vermiculite to my soil. Because I need aeration but I also need some moisture especially during the summer when we get a very dry and arid weather. Thanks for sharing your soil mix. It is a good learning for everybody here. 👍🏼
Succulent Hauz Those are Leuchtenbergia principis. Some call them the agave cactus because of the way it looks. I buy gardening gloves with a hard cover on the palm. Di ko alam anong tawag sa material basta the type that glochids don’t cling to although really sharp spines can still penetrate it. I use tongs, too to handle my cactus. 🙂
I love those blue cacti Anna! I think I need to add more scoria to my cacti soil.I can't find any pumice here in Australia.Thank you for sharing this video!😘👍
Thank you Ana! I still have so much to learn but watching your show gives me a lot of info on how to take care of them. By the way what brand of cactus soil do you use?
Love this video cuz I'm just about to report some of my cacti that has outgrown their pots. BTW, have you seen Growing Succulents with LizK? She's a Pinay too from Australia who starts her videos with a cup of coffee too.😍
@@CactusCaffeine I try to use her soil formula for succulents just like how I follow your formula for cacti BTW, my Santa Rita Opuntia had flower buds already. So excited.😭
Oh, I buy mine at a local nursery store here. The other brand that I use is the house brand soil of Star Nursery (Nevada and Arizona locations). I don’t think they sell it online. I try not to use those with peat moss. Peat moss gets too compact and is hard to rehydrate when it gets very dry.
Hi ana. I need your help☺️. I bought a new small cacti and repot it like you... After 2 day ı watered it and put it my balcony.. Then ı realized it began to soft at top . Not mother plant.. Little babies began to sofness.. Like a sponge when ı touch it.. I separate babies from mother plant.. What can ı do for save them.. Some says a little water can cause softness too.. I dont understand my fault. Too much water and cool balkony or little water☺️
Meral Demir is it just soft or is it turning brown? Turning brown means it could be start of a rot. But just soft with the color unchanged could mean your cactus is dehydrated.
@@CactusCaffeine thanks Ana for your answer from Turkey. I 'mvery happy now. 😊cacti is just soft. İmmediately I ll water it.. I changed my soil ıthink drenaj is too much. The water doesnt stay in it maybe.. There is pumice perlit lava rock vermiculite a little cinnamon a little coaldust and garden soil.. But maybe ı should add more soil. What do you think?
If there is garden soil in it already, I wouldn’t add any more. Just water thoroughly, then let soil dry completely before the next watering. It takes time before a dehydrated cactus plumps back up so just be patient. 🙂
@@CactusCaffeine mammillaria prolifera.. I dont know jungle or desert.. I ll be patient ☺️ thnks ana. İt is important to share your knowledge and experiences for beginner.. There is alot of thing to learn from you. Take care of yourself these bad days..
Jhumel Mercado If you did not wash the roots, you may pot it directly in dry soil. But if you washed the roots, air drying is always the safest method. 🙂
Like 48. 👍👍 Great video, Ana! 👏👏 Everyone should be able to repot and know the right soil mix Love all the new cacti you bought. I still enjoyed watching even though I'm not a beginner ☺️☺️. You did use gloves at the beginning but later on just used one or none hahaha 😀😀. So you do understand that at certain times gloves can be a hindrance especially when it comes to more delicate handling. 👍👍👏👏😍😍
Molly Cher, so far that Leuchtenbergia and the Thanksgiving cactus are the only ones I can handle without gloves. 😁 Spines like me so much they always cling to me. 🤭😁
Dead roots lang ang inaalis ko minsan. Kasi dito sa amin, matagal mag-root ang cactus because it is too hot and humidity is so low. Natutuyot yung cactus bago mag-ugat ulit.
Hindi kasi sa climate ko, mahirap magpa-ugat. Weather is too dry all year round and it is either too cold or too hot. I only have a short period during spring when root development happens.
Hi Ana ! After You repot the cactus 🌵 when do You water them ? I just repotted some cactus 🌵 today that I ordered online and were bare root . I did not water them yet . Hope You can help Me. Maraming Salamat ! 🙏🏽😊🌵
Cactus Caffeine Hi Ana ! Thank You So much ! 😊 They were dry cuz I couldn’t plant them when I received them right away . I ordered some special cactus 🌵 mix online and it was delivered late. Sobra akong nag-aalala . 😅😅😅
Rollen Stone hi i know this is slightly late but in my experience, it’s better to wait a few weeks before watering as you need to let your cactus adjust and get used to the new soil :)
Hi Ana I repot my melocactus a week after with same potting soul n same terica pot i have them by my kitchen window. I like the way you do yours so simple and quick I’m learning so much from watching you. Thanks 🙏 for the video 💕 💕

I have a question. When cacti are in down time, is it OK to let them be exposed to the sunlight?
Thanks very much Ana, very much appreciated for your answer. Your videos are lessons and we learned for free. Have a great weekend!

Love to watch your videos.. Love from India..
Wow! I’m thrilled to have a viewer from India. Thank you and welcome! Cheers from Las Vegas. 🙂🌵☕️ ... By the way, you should check out the RUclips channel The Desert Plant Diary. Carl lives in India. Tell him I sent you over. 😉
Happy thanksgiving
i use a mix of
•40% Pumice or Granite
•30% Cactus or Potting Soil (large chunks, branches, and twigs sifted out)
• 20% Perlite
•10% Vermiculite
scott brady oh, that is a great gritty mix. I want to try adding vermiculite to my soil. Because I need aeration but I also need some moisture especially during the summer when we get a very dry and arid weather. Thanks for sharing your soil mix. It is a good learning for everybody here. 👍🏼
it is a good mix for seedlings too
what is the namemof.that tall aloe.looking cacti? shes beautiful. what kind of gloves are those too? i want to gift hubby as well...
Salamat po
I love those blue cacti Anna! I think I need to add more scoria to my cacti soil.I can't find any pumice here in Australia.Thank you for sharing this video!😘👍
On the contrary, I can’t find scoria here. Haha. Either one is good for the mix. Good luck and I appreciate you!
What is the name of the one at 9:22 please ???
Parodia buiningii 🙂🌵
Thank you. Very useful information.
K gotta go make a coffee now for these
Yaye for coffee and cactus! Cheers! 🙂
Thank you Ana! I still have so much to learn but watching your show gives me a lot of info on how to take care of them. By the way what brand of cactus soil do you use?
The soil brand that I use is Black Gold. That is the soil bag that I showed in this video. 🙂
Love this video cuz I'm just about to report some of my cacti that has outgrown their pots. BTW, have you seen Growing Succulents with LizK? She's a Pinay too from Australia who starts her videos with a cup of coffee too.😍
Thank you! Yes, I watch Liz’s channel, too. 🙂 Her succulents are so colorful!
@@CactusCaffeine I try to use her soil formula for succulents just like how I follow your formula for cacti
BTW, my Santa Rita Opuntia had flower buds already. So excited.😭
Santa Rita flowers are pretty and looks so delicate.
@@CactusCaffeine and the flowers stay alive longer than other cacti blooms.
How about this pot size?
different kind of cactus,,i love it💚💛💜
Thank you for watching. Cheers from Las Vegas! 😊🌵☕️
Love your cactus ❤️😍
Thank you ☺️
Hi Ana, this soil is not longer available - do you have maybe other recommendations? Many thanks.
Oh, I buy mine at a local nursery store here. The other brand that I use is the house brand soil of Star Nursery (Nevada and Arizona locations). I don’t think they sell it online. I try not to use those with peat moss. Peat moss gets too compact and is hard to rehydrate when it gets very dry.
good tutorial, really helpful, tks for your video
Thanks for sharing, do u water them after repot or wait for a week to water?
If the soil is dry, I lightly water them right away. But it is always safer to wait a few days before watering.
@@CactusCaffeine ok noted & thanks
By the way, I am assuming you have a desert type cactus and not a tropical/jungle type.
@@CactusCaffeine mammillaria prolifera.. I dont know jungle or desert.. I ll be patient ☺️ thnks ana. İt is important to share your knowledge and experiences for beginner.. There is alot of thing to learn from you. Take care of yourself these bad days..
Thank you 🌵🧑🏼🦲
Do you know of where I can find a list or something of rot prone/rot resistant cacti?
I’m sorry but I do not. I tried researching online but did not find one. 🌵☕️
Hi! Can i repot my old cactus directly without airdry?
Jhumel Mercado If you did not wash the roots, you may pot it directly in dry soil. But if you washed the roots, air drying is always the safest method. 🙂
@@CactusCaffeine thank you. Another question, when should i water it after repotting?
Hi Anna I love your videos
Thank you for your feedback. Cheers! 😃🌵☕️
Thank you too I just started to buy plant Cactus love them so that’s why I watching your videos
What is the pumice for
Antonio Nepomuceno for soil aeration and to make it fast draining. 🌵☕️
What's your plant and pot size. Thanks for lovely video. Love 💞 from India
Pot size is 4inches height and about 3.5inches across at the bottom.
Can you use a plain cat litter in the soil?
I see some mix that with their soil but I haven’t tried that on mine. 🙂
Hi po .....di po kau tlga nag root trim?
Dead roots lang ang inaalis ko minsan. Kasi dito sa amin, matagal mag-root ang cactus because it is too hot and humidity is so low. Natutuyot yung cactus bago mag-ugat ulit.
Eu assisti o seu vídeo, amei!
I’m glad. Thank you! 🙂🌵☕️
Hi ana...dka po tlga nag root trim?
Hindi kasi sa climate ko, mahirap magpa-ugat. Weather is too dry all year round and it is either too cold or too hot. I only have a short period during spring when root development happens.
You had me at coffee
Hi Ana ! After You repot the cactus 🌵 when do You water them ? I just repotted some cactus 🌵 today that I ordered online and were bare root . I did not water them yet . Hope You can help Me. Maraming Salamat ! 🙏🏽😊🌵
If the soil is moist, I water only after it dries out. But if the soil is dry, I water after 3 days to give the roots some time to heal. 🙂
Cactus Caffeine Hi Ana ! Thank You So much ! 😊 They were dry cuz I couldn’t plant them when I received them right away . I ordered some special cactus 🌵 mix online and it was delivered late. Sobra akong nag-aalala . 😅😅😅
Nanggaling pa sa Florida yung Cactus 🌵 Gritty Mix . Total opposite from where I am . 😆🤣 Hoping na My new babies will be okay . 🙏🏽🙏🏽
@@CactusCaffeine I was going to ask this same question. Thank you and greeting from Chicago!
Newbie here... been watching your videos... learned a lot. :) pilipinas 😊
Maraming salamat po and welcome! I hope you keep in touch. 🙂🌵☕️
Hi friend, I have a quick question for you. After repotting a cacti, do you water right away or wait a week for the roots to establish??
Rollen Stone hi i know this is slightly late but in my experience, it’s better to wait a few weeks before watering as you need to let your cactus adjust and get used to the new soil :)
Interesting
Hi Ana I repot my melocactus a week after with same potting soul n same terica pot i have them by my kitchen window. I like the way you do yours so simple and quick I’m learning so much from watching you. Thanks 🙏 for the video 💕 💕
JENNY BENTON hahaha! Our melos are twins! This soil brand is my favorite so far for cactus. I find it too gritty though for leafy succulents.
Yea Ana I use the same brand, but for cactus and succulent for my tropical 🌴 plants and succulent. I stay away from succulents cause I’ve been very unsuccessful. They seemed to slowly say bye 👋 bye 👋 JB so I stick with cacti 🌵 🙏 for ur comments Cheers 🥂
Super Poland love 🌵🌵🌵
Nice , very nice !!

Hi, im only 13 and i got 3 cacti but... They don't show any improvement or whatever after a month since i have it, and i have try kinda hard to getting know about them (just to see at least some different)😌😌😌 i wanna ask u if bfou this i made a mistake that i didn't washed the roots? Before i repot it and is there any effects on it ? And can i still "repot" it ?
So, rn I am very glad that ur vid was in my recommended and now i figured out some of mistakes from your vid. Btw this is my second time i watched ur vid 😃 i personally love ur vids and thank you so much!!!

If you put several of those packing peanuts over the spines, your plant would love you better than using those tongs .
