I remember my mind being blown when I first watched Carl play it. Time really flies.
Considering that he also made one of the most spectacular MM2 level, I’m pretty sure he knows exactly what he’s doing.

And yeah I remember, the reason it was called "Twice twice" was because you couldn't beat the level so you had to do it all again. You do everything twice, and then you do everything twice a second time. And now since you're playing it again, you do everything twice twice twice
also you were wondering how you solved it the first time: the identical sections at the end share a pipe between them, and it's a pipe you can go into that reveals the gimmick. I don't remember how to get into that pipe though

Tbh this level really defined the troll level genre. It was the first troll level that really used your instincts against you--predicting what you'd do and trolling you based on that. It was a much needed development from troll levels just being frustrating and unfair.
Yeah, and also it's just one of my favorite troll level videos (not just because it was a "key" part of troll history, but because Carl had some particularly amazing moments). They showed the funny reaction where he went "last time I went right, now I'm going to go left! (doesn't die) Yes!!! *celebrates for 5 seconds then proceeds to immediately die to the Kiazo block*.
But on top of that you had the moment (I think right after the previous moment in the level actually) where he runs into a spring (I think he had already fallen for the troll and effectively died) and runs back to the left and some fish was timed perfectly to kill you which was where the “how did he know” in the title of the original video was quoted from.
"7 troly peices" was before this. As Carl says in the video, this was one of the first big "troll magic" levels, but watching Carl's face as he hits the flagpole in that level is an absolute "THX lemur" moment of revelation. It's one of the most iconic moments in gaming, in my opinion.
Fun fact: The entry way goomba area has a little fern above the pipe, and the duplicate one does not.
Carl can’t remember trolls five minutes into a level. I don’t know why he thought he’d know then eight years later.

26:09 this part of the ending partially shows you how the troll works; you get spit out right between the original and twice twiced goomba donut towers, so you can see them both at the same time and realize how you were tricked. And that realization is part of the troll! A parting blown raspberry from symplectic before he CP1s you. It's actually really clever, especially for a seven year old troll level.
Of course, it goes without saying that Carl was too blind to notice. =P

7:30 I recall a twice once level in early MM2 era. The idea was to use claws and conveyers to create pseudo-random events that leads to two different set of trolls. I think Carl has made a video with that in the title.

One of my all time favorite levels ever
Whenever you bring the old trolls out it bring memories even for me, that's a person that has never played mario maker. All I have been doing for years now is sit back and enjoying. Even those old Sean Hip puzzles were also so good, maybe you should try to visit them if you could.
When I think of the greats in trolling, this is the level I think of. It's great to see you revisit it after this many years since I suspect a considerable amount of your viewers aren't familiar with it.

The Twice Twice version of bomb excavation takes longer to excavate because the bombs aren't lit coming out of the pipe, so they have a longer fuse when you bop them. That's also a hint that it's a Twice Twice room.

I think my favorite moments in both plays of this level are whenever Carl goes into a door and forgets what's on the other side because the doors are switched between the similar sections, leading him to instantly die again and again! I don't see that too often in future twice twice levels, but it's so genius because it has the highest potential of making the player forget what's ahead and kills them again and again and again!

this was a surprise to see after I just rewatched rye royal's troll level history video for like the fourth time
I missed those stacked pipe shenanigans of MM1
but if you grabbed cp2, you respawn as small mario, so how do you beat it from cp2? (which you have to do in validation/upload)
By actually going through the pipes to the start of the level, and replaying the entire thing.
@@smerriman you sure there isnt a stacked pipe above the goomba too, that transports you somewhere else? (for example to the 2nd pipe with just a mushroom in it) so you dont have to go through all that?
@@BerniPro Yeah, there was definitely nothing else. The fact the level creator had to do it was a very nice touch (in fact, the level creator was the *only* one who had to do it, given everyone else could just restart).

So CP 2 is CP 0 the clear check is doable you would play the level from start. Then from CP 1 finally from the beginning again from CP 0 😂
I remember the original video showing up in my youtube recommendations, being utterly fascinated by the story telling of the level. I've watched each and every one of your main channel videos since, as well as being super hyped whenever you play a game I love on your 2nd channel.

Amazing. Carl reacts with a "what?!" at 8:45, when he is stuck behind the launcher. He reacted exactly the same way, in exactly the same spot, when playing this level for the first time (6:14 into the original video).
You know what saddens me? If they every make a Super Mario Maker 3, it won't have broken tracks. :(

Z does do something besides spin jump, if you hold Z you will do a weird full jump no matter your momentum. I've seen a few courses use Z to indicate full jumps

I bet with the ending of that Japanese level, the troll was if you see CP1 and immediately try to retreat down the pipe you just came out of, that's the actual cp1
