Robert, you are truly a blessing. I have two S40s and I use your videos all the time. My 2006 has a leak "somewhere". I will be using your video to help me replace all the hoses. Please keep on keepin' on!
Interestingly enough, this is very close to how the upper radiator hose is connected on a P3 Volvo S60 (2012 S60 T5) and this video was perfect for me to know where to go next with it, thank you so much!
I have a coolent leak in a 2006 S40 2.4i. I've isolated it to a coolant line under the air box. Watching how you got the airbox out and reading other online info about removing S40 airboxes makes me sorry that I got a Volvo. What a tight fitting MESS under the hood! It served me well for 17 years, but this might be the end. My next car is on order (2023 Toyota 4Runner). I just need to keep my S40 running another month or so. I thought I could put some JB Weld Epoxy putty at the hose leak site to stem the dripping. I can't even get my hand in there from the underside. That darn airbox is in the way from the topside. What a mess. Oh well. I'm checking coolant levels every time I drive. I usually put in some. I also have a drip pan under the car when it is parked. THANK YOU for this video. It really shows how complicated this all is. I was hoping I could just get the airbox out and patch the coolant line.
I’d definitely advise all owners of these cars to get these hoses replaced cause if they bust your engine will blow very quickly just ask the previous owner of my s40 I put a used engine in my s40 it actually isn’t quite as hard as you might think all the wiring is plug and play very easy the engine comes out fairly easily you have to angle it out the frame rails for it to clear I left the trans attached the new engine was a bitch to get the mounts lined up since it sits tilted rearward a little but overall not as intimidating as it might seem Now I have a pretty good daily 5 speed s40
Good video but regarding that restrictor coupler you drilled out: You know how factory bean counters are - they cut every penny they can so that wouldn't be there if it weren't needed. It is most likely there to slow down any sudden large surges that might cause the surge tank to overflow and loose coolant. Unless you can find evidence that it'll *cause* a problem, safe to assume it's there to *prevent* one . . I'd leave that one as-is.
Robert the hose going to the block below the intake manifold. What is that for? Is it a sensor on the end going into the block. Just bought a Volvo and that hose was broken right at the end going into the block
I use your videos as a point of reference always. Got a 07 volvo s40 2.4 , coolant hose from reservoir to block under manifold. Now the neck of the connector to the hose snapped. I have a connector im unable to get off the block , its the same black and green connector shown on your video. Help would be appreciated?? Please and thanks
@@RobertDIY I BELIEVE HE IS TALKING ABOUT THE FITTING SEEN AT 12:12 OF THE VIDEO. Can you unclip hose?? or do you need to take the fitting off the block with the hose like you did.
hey buddy. what causes water to leak through the expansion tank breather? i recently fixed it from overheating since it mixed oil and water and had formed a sludge of oil and water mixture in a volvo s40 2.4L
@12:19 That clip at the end of the hose that connects to the flange that screws into head...how in the WORLD do I reattach it to that flange?! For the life of my, I cannot get it back over the flange. Any tips? (It seems like you may not have taken the clip off and just left it on when you screwed it back into the head, then attached the tubing.)
Robert, why would there be very little pressure going to the heater core? Engine warms up, but does not seem to pump through the heater core. I've flushed it, it's not plugged. Please don't say thermostat. It's -30 degrees here. I'm about to beat it with a sledge hammer.
Been getting a coolant leak , have to refill coolant every week , I assume my leaks coming from that octopus hose although the leaks on the passenger side , not the driver side
When they start going bad. OEM hoses, probably 15 years but if you have to pull something to gain access to them with over 10 years on them it's probably not a bad idea to replace them.
@@RobertDIY Okay thanks! I have an '09 S40 with the 2.4 non-turbo and '10 v50 R Design with the T5. From my experience with the cars the v50 is less problematic with more miles. I've had a lot more work into the s40. I'm not exactly sure why. Both cars were well cared for from what I can tell. If I had it to do over I would have passed on the s40. I loved the v50 so much that's really why I ended up with the s40. I put a ton of miles for work on it.
@@RobertDIY How quickly does a head gasket blow? I think the lower hose on mine (09 C70) blew out today, but I stopped the engine and found noticed within minutes of it happening.
@@RobertDIY I did, search every site and the only thing close was a 01-07 V70 video but that’s a different platform. Even called FCPEuro they got the same thing
I had a slow seep on the octopus hose and saw no leaks without taking the air box off, but every couple days I had to add coolant. So it could well be the same thing.
What about replacing the auto radiator hose with the manual one and then installing an oil cooler? That lower radiator hose has too many potential failure points.
I'm asking as I'm not sure... The manual transmission model uses Gates 05-2799 while the auto uses 05-2410. They appear to be similar with the auto having 2 more branches which go to the ATF cooler. If you install an external ATF oil cooler, would you keep the original cooler? Would you fill the water side of the cooler with ATF and seal it? I was thinking that this would prevent corosion and also pressure balance the internal of the oil cooler.
that's why I say these s40s are junk..no room/ everything plastic and ecu in a hot engine bay if them parts don't fail today its wont be long before they bust and break . I drive a s60 that mess under the hood is more aggravation that a s70 or 850 any day... I know the average person cant work on these cars anymore.

Do you suggest the silicon hose kit (IPD or Do88) over the OEM rubber ones?
No.
Is this the infamous 'lower radiator hose' that is prone to crack at the joints and leak?
I have no idea.
Nice job, doing the same tomorrow.
Did you get a error code when disconnect ecu?
no
At 5:43 where exactly is that jack placed? Is that the oil pan?? Didn’t know I could put a jack there
Pad it and don't jack it up to much. It's not to jack the car, just to raise the engine a little. Watch the video and pay attention.

What does it mean when I pour coolant in my Volvo, the coolant will start pouring out to the bottom on the ground towards the back of the car
Means you have a coolant leak.
