The actual reason for this, I think, is to begin shutting down small companies and single Owner operators, because it is much easier to control larger companies or mega carriers.

But back to training; yeah new drivers having proper training on the aspects of trucking should be more than they are currently; because things are changing so rapidly. Here is an example; I recently met a brand new driver, was with a trainer for 3 whole weeks and could not back his truck up to a dock with three empty spaces on each side, wtf, and then there are all the electronics and computers involved in operating the truck, that driver should be trained on also.
I have an A.S and 2 Bachelors degrees in IT programming and security; I have a hard time with ELD's and truck computers, I can only imagine if a driver had to do anything in that aspect to get rolling and have only bare knowledge, could easily become a clusterf(*k of major proportions.

The only thing I don’t agree with really is the speed limiters. I primarily drive the western US and a lot of these states have speed limits of 80 MPH. If trucks are limited to 65 I think that causes more of a Hazard. It can also lead to more road rage incidents because people driving cars could get stuck behind these trucks and lose their temper. I see it all the time in California where the truck speed limit is 55 13:07

While I agree that slower speeds result in better fuel mileage, speed limiters haven't dropped accident rates in Ontario at all. According to the OPP there are more wrecks now than ever. One reason is ill trained drivers on the road and way too many of them running along in a conga line 10' off the truck in front of them, particularly in northern Ontario. You also see far too many of them on the four lanes taking 5-10km to pass each other too.

If the courses are expensive, or overly complicated then less people will be able to get their own authority. And speed limiters keep owner operators from having a efficiency edge over these mega carriers.
Everyone needs to contact their congressman and senators, even if you don’t have a truck. These rules will cause prices for goods to go up, and it will open the door to speed limiters on personal vehicles.

I can say from experience that the automatic braking system isn't that great. I think the idea's good, but the execution needs improvement. The detection system will pick up on some small object like a mile marker and briefly hit the brakes, which is bad when you're going around a corner what with double momentum issues. My truck especially likes to slam on the brakes when I'm entering a truck wash. The second and bigger issue is that it activates far too closely to a stopped vehicle on the road. If you're heavy, you're still going through whatever's in front of you. If you're empty, it might slow you enough to reduce the incident to property damage and injury. Overall, I believe that the best system would be for truck drivers to always be on their toes and paying attention.

BUT now I can go at least 72 mph. It's not too bad and I am not stuck behind trucks going the same speed and cars interaction is less especially in the country areas. The only thing is that drivers have to pay close attention to the road, especially in the cities. If all trucks going the same speed it's too much interaction. If speed is limited 75 is not bad, but honesty we shouldn't be limited at all

Only bad thing about driving a truck governed at 60-65 mph is that you could be capped out at max speed while cars are flying past you at 80-100 mph. There’s plenty of situations where you become a brick wall on the interstate and if anybody hits you, it’s your fault until you can prove otherwise. I’ll admit 65 is a good spot to be governed at, but some of these trucks that are capped at 50-60, that’s a nightmare waiting to happen.

Im glad you brought up the braking system. Mine does that exact thing. 2018 T680. But with an extra caveat. If its pouring down rain my system will spazz out i.e. repetative beeping and attempts to slow the truck. The this has only occured since putting the truck in the shop to update the collision detection system. Nothing like puckering the bum whilst white knuckling tje steering wheel in a maelstrom because of a "safety" feature.

Great video Ronin (lmao yes it was in purpose) getting better and better with the script, filming, editing and video setting, I'm jealous. So ya want feedback well here is my long story feedback; mainly because I'm shutdown for the night and bored.
First off the FMCSA is run by people that have never done the job and do not have first hand experience in doing the job in any phase, as a company driver, a lease driver or an o/o and that is the major downfall since the FMCSA was created. The FMCSA like many other parts of the Government gets kick backs from various sources, their is no doubt here, that does not have the individual truckers, small companies and single person O/O's with their own authority like myself in mind at any point, unless it is to screw us.
Speedlimits not a big deal; same outrage happened when companies big and small started to govern trucks speed; me being an O/O not tied to a company but my own, I control the speed limit of my truck and it is usually around 65-68mph, why you may ask, simple 9 mpg running at 65-68 and letting the computer do the work or 5-6 with me running the pedals at 70-80mph, a trucker knows what kind of savings are involved there, if you don't, then stay away from being an Owner Operator.
The big thing I have against this is; this is MY TRUCK I PAID FOR AND I OPERATE AND I TAKE THE RISK DOING SO; so what gives the Government the right to tell me what to do with my vehicle and pay attention RV Drivers, Hot Shot drivers and even civilian car drivers, this is coming at y'all next.
New entry 100% agree a good thing.
Auto Braking is going to be so dangerous, I foresee a lot of incidents here with jackknifing because of this system, both on slick roads and icy roads. Who will be responsible will be determined by the Insurance Companies and the lawyers I bet; the true winners in this crap.
I agree also with the fleet safety and the FMCSA knows about the ELD manipulation; that happens from overseas and there is little that can be done about it, anyone with the right IT knowledge and programming can do the same.
As for the "safety inspections" I have been running now for 32 years and I can count with one finger when I have seen a "inspector" looking at trucks on a yard; I was told by a Florida U.S. D.O.T inspector that is because they cannot prove the trucks are not going in for repair, sounds plausible to me , but I'm not doing their job.
Now in todays age look at regular trucking and look at the hot-shot drivers; in FL more and more hot-shot's are being pulled in for inspection and the big rigs are let by, unless there is a clear defect that catches the watching eye. The reason for this and this comes directly from a Florida D.O.T. inspector, "we have X amount of inspections to do in a day and it does not say which type of vehicles have to be inspected; inspecting a hot-shot takes 15 minutes or less, inspecting a big rig takes from 45 minutes to 2 hours, so which would you focus on inspecting in the heat and rain of Florida to meet the X amount?" kinda shoves the safety aspect out the window.

I was a victim of auto braking system. I had a company semi automatically went from 65MPH on clear I-40 NM going east an hour from ABQ cut off my acceleration control and had another semi tailgating me. I went from 65MPH to 35mph fast without warning and I didn’t gain control put in neutral than gun the fuel flipped into Drive and got it back to 65MPH. Put in a company shop days later and they said the mapping system built into truck needed update. Because the brand mapped out all the roads in America to help reduce fuel consumption when in cruise. The system did recognize the location and disengaged but didn’t allow me to manually control till it got to safe speed to give me control.

Also, fuel efficiency is a huge factor. Actually, I would argue its the main factor of lowering speed down for drivers cause it's not the driver saving money, it's the company. Me capable of doing 700-800+ days really opens the doors for loads for me. Currently I'm living off of 710 miles a day getting about 3.85$per mile cause I can take these loads and get them where they need to be cause my truck isn't governed at 65mph.

But when you are in the situation trying to pass someone when everyone going the same speed, you've got other vehicles getting on the highway, you got others on the left lane going twice the speed limit. Another word it's great when you don't have to drive 😂. Enjoy it Americans, you guys used to honk and give us a finger for going too slow.

Very sensitive subject speed limiters. If your an Owner Operator, owner of a fleet, company owner etc. You should have the choice to choose if you want speed limiters or not for you. Not the government. There are situations and times when extra speed is need to make a safe pass and not empeding traffic side by side blocking lanes for miles making road rage a possibility. Another example when on highways, interstates. Before approaching a steep hill, you want to gain more speed to climb the steep hill and also go with the faster flow of traffic so your not going half the speed limit holding up traffic when you have a full load of weight. Cruising at 65 mph yes is fuel efficient but also need to be efficient enough to speed up when necessary. Dash cams always a must have as well.

Any extra technology on trucks, make it an extra cost option.
Unlike passenger cars, you can still spec out a truck down to the feature, the way you want it to an extent. No new technology needs to be added to what we already have. Simply perfect what we already have. As Ronen mentioned the issues with automatic braking, it slams brakes when the truck goes under a tunnel at a certain time of day. He's also correct by saying that truck manufacturers need to focus on fixing that rather than add more emission control on an already clean idle system. In short, before adding something new, FIX THE CURRENT STUFF.

When government agencies are talking about emissions on trucks, they're focusing on nitrous oxide and particulates, and to a lesser extent carbon monoxide. That icky stuff can get turned into nitrogen gas, water, and carbon dioxide which are way less harmful to breathe. The total carbon emissions are baked into the fuel consumed by the truck. Carbon emissions are relevant, but they're not the target for all the latest and greatest emissions features and technology.

The problem with governers isn't truck safety. The problem with governers is they're set at 60, 63, 65, 67, 68, 70, and on and on. When you have two lanes of travel leaving a major city it takes forever for the traffic to normalize because you have a dozen different governers trying to get back into a free flow. If a truck is governed it needs to be a certain speed industry-wide. There should be two governer settings XX and N/A. Backups cause accidents. A line of governed trucks can cause just as much damage without even trading paint.

What's the purpose of governing the truck below the speed limit? I personally think that the slower vehicles are more of a danger than those going the speed limit. Not saying we should get out there and try to race everyone but we should at least be able to go with the flow of traffic. I know most people go over the limit but come on, I don't think slowing us down is going to make everything better. Just my personal opinion.

I have 33 years, over 4 million miles, 0 accidents or incidents. The key to safety is to train the drivers and make sure they know what they are doing. As I driver, I noticed that slower speeds impede traffic and create frustration and impatient car drivers. I'm limited at 65mph, and when I'm passing a truck limited at 63, I have a line off cars behind me who are upset. Also, I have had 2 cars pass in emergency lanes in an 80mph zone when I was trying to pass at my max speed of 65mph. Not saying trucks should go 80 mph+, but 75 is more realistic as majority legal speed limits tend to be above 70 mph.
Also, when I had a truck limited at 72mph I averaged mpg 9.1-9.6 based on hills and load weight. I would cruse on declines at 75 mph in an 80 and capture better mpg. Same truck and engine i have now is limited to 65 mph. I get 8.1-8.4 mpg. At faster speeds and staying below, the actual speed limit of 75 or 80 I get better mpg on downhills and long straight aways. Up hill I feather the acceleration.

I agree that the system could be useful, but only if it works. And at this point I haven't seen any evidence that it's reliable. If the system tries to slam on my brakes when I'm on the highway because a plastic bag blows across the roadway, the danger caused is much higher than any benefit the system could ever have.

When I began Driving in 1994 most trucks where govern at 55mph. Cars would be traveling at speed of 60-70mph. This made driving more stressful as the cars would be eager to pass the slower trucks just to slam on their brakes in front of me. To this day I'm always expecting and car that passes me to brake check me. Regulating a trucks speed lower than the flow of traffic is a hazard to all vehicles on the highway. Training all new drivers is the only way to insure safety, not regulating some while leaving other do as they wish.
