Nice Bret! Skully sized paddle..... keep at it and keep safe. Sinking the wood in a pail of water softens it easily. Great work! I hoard draw knives, often get them at garage sales for little money
Excellent work! Going through the tools that one would actually use on the shave horse is a game changer - especially that rasp. Keep up the good work Captn!!!
Cheers Brett, appreciate the follow-up video, now it makes a lot more sense. As someone who's quite keen on wood carving, this may be something worth considering doing at some point
I so wish I had room enough for a shave horse. It always looks like a much nicer way to work with some of my all time favorite tools! Also, sweet spootula!
Lots of good info here. I picked up a Shinto rasp after your suggestion last summer. And those of you who are going to make a shave horse make sure your horse has a nice wide stance. They get a little tippy if the legs are too far inboard. Not that I would know anything about a tipsy horse...
Great to see this new 'horse' in use. Nice draw knife explanation too...I don't own one and have never used one but always been a bit curious about them...good to know about the differing cuts from each side of the 'blade'. Thanks Brett.👍😁
I have a few 3rd party plug-ins that help achieve this effect, but it is basically speeding up the footage, and then controlling the “frame rate” so that 2-4 frames play per second, rather than my standard 24fps
A thought, Lower the hold down crossbar an inch so that when it holds against the base it's not right at the peak and I think you'll get a much more solid hold. Thanks for the video!!
Hey Friend!! Long time to see!! I recall when you created this masterpiece!! My first thoughts when I saw you ‘burn’ the surface areas with a small torch……..WHAT?? Burn something new?? LOL!! But by now I have seen quite a few RUclipsrs do the same. So ALL is forgiven!! LOL!! I think you have given me an inspiration to work on my Shaving Horse. My wood of choice is red cedar!! Let me see if I can attach some photos after the sawmill slabbed TWO red cedar logs that had been cut from a new friend’s old farm ground!! Good Luck from Casey ILLINOIS!! 4:45
I think the spokeshave is my favorite but I’m glad I have one of each, except the rasp so probably should look into adding that to my collection. Agree that all those tools come in super handy. Great video!! Appreciate the extra tips especially since i forgot which side is which on the draw knife!!
Did my irritated red eyes see band saw-, belt sander and angle grinder marks along the making of this fine spootula? Not to point fingers, it just cought my wood working and detective eye. Great work anyhow! and mighty fine design. might copy ;)
So...if all the things I could have dreamed about last night, it was a shave horse, this one specifically...now I'm actively reasearching (no-weld) plans to build the tool of my dreams, that I didn't know I needed.
@@skullandspade Ahh, I see. Thanks for the reply, I've been taking an interest in various shaving horse designs, getting an idea for what type I want to build myself, I think I want a bench frame which I can connect and remove various head pieces onto so that one bench can be used for a shave horse, a spoon mule, carving table or wood lathe.
Could you have kept it the same size and filled the hole? Was it just an aesthetic choice? Or you don’t want to use resin and such on something that is used for food and will be in contact with liquid and heat?
Hey captain, on a side note sorry in advance if I shoulda chose a different way, but I'm technochallenged chromagnum man child. Ifin your of a mind to, check out B&B Forge Bob Bew's video from this Sunday. May just be something to it that'll tickle you fancy
Am I the only one who thinks it looks like a cricket? That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with crafting a spootula whilst riding a collapsible shave cricket. If that's your thing I say do it with gusto!
Nice . Nuff said. The addition of the leather pads seem to be a great aid in work holding. Was half expecting to see a resin fill or vacume stabilizer segway lol. But again your enjinuity bushwacked my anticipation right in the old pie hole. Lolololol Love the end results and its pretty wood to boot. 🙏blessings abundant Capt. Crawford out 🧙♂️ P.S. After 50+yrs of boss related bottom injuries and maaaaybee a wife or two, gotta admit I'm a wee bit posteriorally challenged. So reckon ima have to rub my two remaining brain cells together and come up with a more boney bottom friendly seating device. Stowable of course lending to portability. Ifin yer looking south n see a brown cloud rising...not to worry it's not a dust storm, just a bit of rust dust coming out of me old ears. Lmbo

Heck yeah, such good tools to have!
Wow. I was looking for videos on shaving a real horse. And I got a awesome lesson on some handy tools! Gotta love the internet!!
I’d say that’s a win
Great video Mr McAfee. This was way relaxing, like audible relaxing. Informative and instructive. More please. Thanks :D
Thank you!!!
That closing shot... oh my!
So nice
Excellent work! Going through the tools that one would actually use on the shave horse is a game changer - especially that rasp. Keep up the good work Captn!!!
Thank you Brian!
Great video sir! I love the calm simplicity of it. Watching you makes me want to break out some handtools and get carving.
Aye, get to it!
Cheers Brett, appreciate the follow-up video, now it makes a lot more sense. As someone who's quite keen on wood carving, this may be something worth considering doing at some point
Aye, they’re great to have in any woodshop
Great tips, especially about clearing out the Shinto rasp. Spoontula looks wonderful too 👍👍
Great technique bro!! Great spoon 2 in 1!!! And great shave horse! Take care my friend!!🙌🏼😃😃
Thank you brother!
Great video, very educational without being pedantic.
Well thank you
Nice bit of whittling and fettling. I bought a Shinto rasp after seeing it one of your earlier vids....tis a proper good tool.
Aye, one of my favourites
I thought we were shaving an actual horse for a second
As if a horse would let you...
Next time maybe
@@skullandspade Just don't use the Shinto rasp...
You roll brilliant sir. Nice video. I love that shave horse.

Nice work Brett. That spoochula came out well. 👍
I love a good shave horse. I really need to build one for the workshop. 🤔
Do it!
This is an editing question, I like the look here 7:48 rather than the normal sped up look.
How does one achieve this sort of stop motion look?
I have a few 3rd party plug-ins that help achieve this effect, but it is basically speeding up the footage, and then controlling the “frame rate” so that 2-4 frames play per second, rather than my standard 24fps

Another great project
Thank you Dylan
Fantastic video! Love your videos! Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
Great intro to tools and carving on shave horse!
Thank you brother
That's a rather nice spootula for all your spooting needs. Also emergency paddling. Arrrrr!
Aye!!!
If life gives you lemons, make spootulas! Love the unique result. Would be great for dishing up rice and hot dogs. Love, Mom.
Thank mama
Great work sir
Thank you Brett!
Great video and thanks for the tips. Might just have a go at a spootula of my own.
Go forth and make!
This is an epic looking shave horse!! I love it. Want one myself now 😄 ...great video 🙌🏻

From a Louisiana perspective, you made a roux stick. This is an excellent cooking utensil used when scraping flour and fat together into a roux.
Ah, there we go
Well done Mate! 😎🤙🏻
Thank you!
Just ran into this video. Now i need to find the build video cuz im wondering what the hell, he did that's making the shave horse not grip good?
The jaw was moved back a couple of inches and we were all good

Get yourself an old tractor seat and throw some padding on it!
Pirates on horseback....whoda thunk it.

You're weird. And I like it.
Important question: what if the horse doesn't want to be shaved?
Oh you
I will have to make an all wood shave horse as I can’t weld. Oh well.
Oh well indeed. It’ll do the job either way!
Save the horses! I mean... shave the horses

So what does a typical draw knife taste like? Don't say chicken
Linseed oil
Go to ikea for a spoon instead.
