So jimmy didn't wanna look weak in front of others, and Nucky didn't wanna look weak by giving a pass to a man that tried to have him killed.

WW1 seems to have induced PTSD more than any war ever, even WW2. Fighting for every inch, living in trenches, poisonous gas, the alarm that you must enter no mans land, tunneling (Tommy) and no appreciation at home. It's more than any man can bare.

It was the uncertainty of whether your trench would be bombed or not that caused so much stress. That and every platoon was made up of friends from back home.

This scene hits on another level when you realize they had planned to kill off Jimmy the whole time but not so early in the series. Learning that Michael Pitt was really hard/ horrible to work with makes it seem like there is some malice in the directors decision to kill him so early in the series and in this way.
the rumors of instability on the set could also have been because of the actor's disagreement with the his character's arc 🤔 he probably knew this going in, yet still rebelled against the outcome...... we will never know since Michael has been reluctant to speak on his time in the show
Actually the show runner denied this outcome was because the actor was difficult to work with. He cited the illness of the actor playing the commodore resulting in Jimmy having to take a bigger role in season 2. The large role as an adversary apparently had to result in this outcome
It's what Jimmy wanted in the end, after Jimmy went over the top in the Argonne he never came back whole. He tried like we all do but it just wasn't in the cards. RIP to the fallen.

Cut too short! That clip NEEDS the last line. If ya watch the show, y'all lnow - Nucky stands over him, James is still (kinda) alive (entrance hole under the eye) and says, "You dont know me, im not looking for forgiveness" before putting the final hole on his melon. The scene aint right without it.

They are rewriting history with this story. I’m sorry there’s no way Jimmy was supposed to die at this point. Story was and I believed to be true that Michael Pitt was difficult and people couldn’t stomach him or his really bad drug habit, so they killed him off.
