Thanks to inspired direction and an unforgettable performance by Heinz Zednik this remains the most enjoyable Das Rheingold in my humble opinion. The cast is perfect.

I met mss Ortrun Wenkel in Rome in 1984. She was so nice and friendly to me. A fan for this amazing singer!

Ortrun Wenkel has the wisest, queenly, and yet angelic opera voice ever! She was born to play Erda!

This production is ,by very very far, the gold standard. Musically, vocally, scenically. The vast force of the myth becomes real here in front of us, as majestically as any Greek drama. Hore, hore, hore.

She is costumed as Ayesha, that is "She who must be obeyed" from H. Rider Haggard's novel from th 1880s that sold more than 300K copies when it first appeared, This is a brilliant reference.

It is nearly 40 years since I first saw this production and fell in love with the Ring Cycle. I have seen quite a few productions now both in the theatre and DVD. Every time I come back to this production I am deeply impressed by the musicianship, the acting and the staging

"Let's take the case that Wagner is one a woman's voice is necessary. A whole act without a woman's voice - that's not possible! But the “Heroines” are not free at the moment. What does Wagner do? He emancipates the eldest Woman of the world, Erda: “Come up, old grandmother! You have to sing!” Erda sings. Wagner's Intention is achieved. He immediately gets rid of the old lady. “What did you actually come for? Take off! Please go back to sleep!” - In summary: a scene full of mythological. A shudder that makes the Wagnerian suspect... Yes, opera lovers we now have to look forward to Wotan being a corrupt businessman, Brunnhilde a vamp/motercycle queen, Freye a quarrelsome hausfrau. Now you honestly tell me: Would Richard WAgner be happy of what has happened to his mythic tetrology?? All together: "NEIN"

I agree. We need to have Wagner’s Ring Cycle Operas be made to look like proper Norse Mythology. Wotan and the Valkyries all wearing winged helmets, the Nibelungs looking impish, the Giants looking like proper fantasy giants or yeti-like, the Rhinemaidens looking like mermaids/water nymphs, etc.
      No more modernized renditions.

So many reasons come to mind why her face is hidden and why she´s dressed that way. People - before you judge from a single moment you should see the entire 4 parts and maybe then you understand Chéreau´s concept. I´m a big fan of Wagner´s music and maybe know a bit more about the contents of his operas since I studied them. And let me assure you - there´s nothing provocative or coming out of the blue in this production. It´s all in the music and words. You just have to listen and keep an open mind instead of focusing too much on productions you got used to in the U.S. and the boredom they produce

@Fynn Please read The Perfect Wagnerite by George Bernard Shaw. Chereau's concept was inspired by the interpretation of the Ring expounded by Shaw in that book. It will enlighten you far more readily than we ever could.
