    In terms of expression, emotion and artistry it almost can't get any better than this.
    Not only she had one of the best voices of the 20th century, she also was an incredibly charismatic woman with a dramatic acting ability.

    Leyla Gencer SUPERBA MERAVIGLIOSA ARTISTA!!! Quell Aida all Arena di Verona x motivi familiari ho avuto la fortuna di gustarmela quasi tutte le serate.
    Anche se la registrazione è datata si possono apprezzare anche le STUPENDE MEZZE VOCI della diva turca.E credetemi in Arena non era per nulla facile.DIVINA
    INSUPERATA INTERPRETE

    Gencer was criticized because of her insistence on using “coupe de glotte “. I find it very dramatic effective. Simionato and Callas used it too, but not so often. Voice teachers in modern times are very much against, as it may affect the voice quality if misused. Gencer was intelligent enough to know how to use it , when necessary.

    She was a lirico-spinto soprano. She did not force her mid-weight lyric voice but used her natural ability to sing dramatic roles. She was one of the best Lady Macbeths, as well. You can't sound so dramatic and sing more than 40 years by forcing your voice...

    • @beachfanatic2010
      @beachfanatic2010 4 года назад +2

      No she was NOT. Once you understand what a real Spinto voice is and how HUGE is! Well it actually should be equally big as a real trained and develop dramatic voice but the identity and qualities are NATURALLY different. Lirico Spinto is Tebaldi and her voice was about 5 times bigger than Gencer. Gabriella Tucci, look her up! That is a true Spinto voice HUGE but still smaller than Tebaldi’s!

    i like this much than maria's version. gencer's voice was more suitable to Aida's tenderness. soft, dramatic, powerful, ut not forced..though i am fond of maria too.

    This is an incredibly inadequate performance--both vocally and in acting. In terms of the latter: does Gencer know how to do anything besides wave her arms? And why does she keep looking at the conductor or the prompter or some part of the Arena? This is NOT an anguished woman, speaking to the gods and to herself.
    And vocally: she sings "Amor fatal" as if it's just another part of the aria! This is the KEY to the entire opera. This woman is trapped. These words need to be sung with deep despair. Gencer's performance is superficial.
    Listen to Maria Callas' live performance from Covent Garden in 1953: you will never be able to listen to another version of this aria (including others by Callas).

    • @sukramebar
      @sukramebar 8 лет назад +2

      yes, she was a lousy actor, judging by this performance at least. But vocally, in my opinion she was one of the best Aidas of her time(better though in -63). She might not have been a great interpreter of lyrics, but she more often than not, had a genuine feeling for the music.
      I would have loved hearing her in her prime and don't expect to hear someone as good.

      Keep your eye (and ear) on a young Australian soprano named Nicole Car. Fabulous voice and wonderful actress. Just saw her in "Luisa Miller" so I know that Verdi is within her capabilities.

      I just followed your suggestion and listend to Callas
      Yes in vocal color and impression nothing can get better than Callas that was the revolution SHE started
      Emotion by using color of tone and phrasing
      However
      I find Gencers singing very impressive and must disagree on your comment of " Amore fatal" Gencer uses posture, Gestik , color and here " Magic Eyes"to give a very emotional performance
      Yes different than Callas but comes as close as it can be
      I wish we had singers who focus on Impression emotion rather than just beautiful singing Today😉
      RIP Maria and Leyla

      Thank you, Sandor, for accepting my invitation to listen to Callas. I'm glad you enjoyed that version. I don't agree with your assessment of Gencer, but it's mostly a matter of taste, in the end. Some voices and ways of using them touch some people deeply and leave others cold. What moves me may move you or not. But the most we can ask is for others to consider our view and let them decide. Thank you for doing so.
