For the last few months, much to the dismay of my girlfriend, and mockery of my friends and family, I've been sleeping on the floor.
I'd been wanting to try this for a while, thanks to Katy Bowman, anthropologist and floor-sleeping advocate. Recently I've been quite low on cash anyway, so thought this was a convenient time to trial it.
I CANNOT let the curiosity lie for these things, and I wasn't satisfied with the evangelistically positive reviews from weird hippy dippy types on youtube, where I got the impression that they only enjoyed doing so because it matched their sense of identity, rather than it being an objectively better way to sleep. So here is my unbiased review, lessons learned, pros and cons of floor sleeping:

I’ve slept on the floor for 2 years straight, my girlfriend found it to be strange at first. Anyways when I was growing up we didn’t have a lot of money so we always slept on the floor, and while now I can afford a bed I just can’t fall asleep on one. The floor to me is comfortable, and my doctor said my spine is straighter than most of his Patience because I sleep on a har surface. I just take 1 blanket and a pillow, I fold the blanket in half and sleep like a taco. Cheers from Moscow

I’ve had lower back issues caused by a car accident I was in a few years ago. My back was literally in pain almost 24/7. I couldn’t stand for long periods of time, I couldn’t sit for long periods of time. Doctors and chiropractors were telling me that I would probably need back surgery. Idk what it was, but instinctively, my body felt like it wanted me to start sleeping on the floor. So, I listened to my instincts, now my back feels amazing!!! all the pain I was in has almost gone away. It’s dramatically dropped from it use to be. Trust me! If you feel back pains and you just can’t fix them at all. Try sleeping on the floor.

I’ve been floor sleeping for two weeks. I just started doing it instinctively because I had been suffering from sciatica for three horrible weeks. Now I know it’s a thing! Has my hip and back improved? Yes. My posture is the most noticeable thing. Standing up straight was a strain for me before. Now I stand with such a straight upper and middle back it feels like I’m arching backward. I’m not, it’s just me adjusting to a change in my body. The better posture looks great on me too, I must say. Thanks for sharing!

Ive been sleeping on the floor for over a year. I would lay a thin comforter over the carpet and sleep as is. At first my hips (from side sleeping) and ribcage (from sleeping on my stomach) could not handle anything. I would get bruised or just be in pain. After a few weeks though you get use to it. Now i can lift my legs and feel no pressure where my hips meet the floor. Sleep is amazing and there's no stress, if any, of falling or turning too much or any wood/metal creaking noises from wriggling around. It's great! Went from a twin size bed to a twinfinity and beyond size bed!

When I started to bench press weights every day, about a week into it, I noticed that I felt more comfortable in bed by not using the pillow beneath my head.
I also noticed that my shoulders automatically wanted to lay flat on the surface instead of round themselves forward as they have done for years, the problem is that the mattress will not allow my shoulders to lay flat as they want, because my body sinks into the mattress, automatically rounding my shoulders, so I have started to research how to sleep on hard surfaces, and my solution will be to buy a sheet of plywood and cut it to size, then lay it on top of the mattress, then I might add exercise mat or some sort of thin foam on top to soften the hard plywood surface a bit.
The point you make in your video about forcing your body to relax by sleeping on the floor or a hard flat surface is spot on, and it should help anyone regain or retain a good posture for life.

I legit started sleeping on the floor after camping by a lake for a few days. While the grounding sensation is definitly not the same at the seventh floor of a building, you are still sleeping on a much larger surface than a bed is. You thought it to be less "luxury" but to me it's the contrary, I sleep on a vaster floor, I feel more grounded, I have to do that little push the morning and actually stand (you know, the thing humans are supposed to do by themselves). We spend all of our lives carried away, supported by objects. From the moment we exit the womb, to the moment of death. I hope some day people realise how much this line of thinking holds to slavery and how childish and unrealistic it is. Try living always standing straight or standing on your own body, in a lot of ways it changes the way you think and see the world. Sitting on the ground at a child's height is not the same as being lifted from the floor by a mighty throne. Care for the floor and what you are living on, what is beneath you're feets, the floor is the same for everybody.

I traded my bed for a Shikibuton/floor sleeping after watching all these videos.
It's been nearly a year since I made the switch. I enjoy the extra space. My room stays cleaner. I'm compelled to vacuum more often, and best of all--- my back stopped hurting within the first few *days*. It doesn't crack and pop nearly as much as it was.
After a day or two of sleeping on just blankets to see if it was right for me, I couldn't WAIT to get home, and lay on the floor. I financed a shikibuton, and ditched my mattress, box board, and frame entirely.
Sometimes I do miss the bed-- but when I go to sit on one or lay on one and it's so uncomfortable.

Solution to the mold from my three days of sleeping on the floor: instead of using a mattress, use a few sheets or blankets, and then when you wake up, fold them up and put them away off the floor. This keeps both the sheets and floor in air circulation.

Finally, a comprehensive review video. Your experiences are a direct reflection of mines. My take on floor sleeping is that every human being on Earth is designed to sleep. Naturally. And beds are $200-$500 And if you need a bed to sleep, then that means everyone should be able to afford $200-$500. And the simple fact is not all humans can afford that. So I come to a conclusion that beds are a man made luxury item that isn’t needed. The ground is the real bed

I just started sleeping on the floor because I am so sore and by bed springs are all broken. In Japan it’s common to sleep on the floor. I’ve already been mostly sitting cross legged on the floor instead of using a desk and that helps too. I can easily stand up straight from a cross legged position without my hands so that’s my plan to get up each morning. I’m not even using a mattress topper haha. I’m going hardcore on the carpet for now. Might get a bamboo mat or a 6 inch cushion like you have.

I slept on the floor for 3 weeks when I was staying with friends last year. They gave me a pad which was about one inch thick, and I added a blanket and a sheet, so I think that was about the same amount of padding as your Ikea topper. I felt I needed it for warmth as well as comfort.
The first night was hard but after that I loved it.
I thought of keeping on with it when I got home but I was too weak, and I got in the bed after a few minutes.
This year I have had a back injury. When it was at its height I tried sleeping on the floor one night but I awoke in agony after a couple of hours and did not persist. I am planning to try again when I’ve recovered.
How do you deal with the moisture issue? Is it practical to air your topper? If so how would you do about it in a flat? In Japan they have balconies and more sunshine than we do in England. I am wondering whether it’s best to try to reduce the padding to two blankets which I can wash frequently.
It was a good post, but if I may say so the music does nothing for you and I’d have concentrated better without it.

I don't use any type of cushion I put a blanket down and sleep directly on the floor. At first this might be painful/ you can be sore at first but for me personally I sleep really well on the floor. It can actually make you appear more chiseled too and the decompression your spine receives from sleeping on the floor is amazing specifically if you lay flat on your back, flat pillow for your head and pillows under your knees. If you lay like this and turn over and arch your back say the way a cat would when it's stretching, your lower back will sound like fireworks going off. 🍻

Because my bed is too soft and barely big enough, my back and such was hurting for months, sleeping with a pillow gave me neck pain, I felt more tired than before going to bed and I was easy to irritate and/or in a bad mood when I woke up.
So over the last 4 days I developed sleeping on a very thin yoga matt and a thick blanket on top, pushed the material in the blanket around so it would lift my lower back, Neck and knees a bit.
For me it has been a game changer, I don't even know when I last slept as well as I do since then!
My mood is great, I wake up earlier and actually refreshed!
My pain is slowly changing and partially dissapears, even after such a short time.
It strongly depends on the individual, but worth a try, listen to what your body feels about, before and after your sleep in general.
Only thing I knew before experiancing it was, that my bed was too soft and that early Humans slept on the ground. xD
Thanks for summarising your personal long-term experiance with sleeping on the ground, good Video. :D

I slept on the floor for years, and have met people that have major back/neck pain that swear by it despite their mobility issues.
If i were to give advice it would be to get a futon like the ones they use in japan, they tend to be easier to roll up or prop up during the day so you give them a chance to dry and not get moldy.
for anyone looking at sleeping on the floor with mobility issues due to their pains, setting up a couple loops on the wall will help you lift yourself up without the need of a burpee. My friend that was in a car accident has their neck wired together because of it, they use gymnastic rings shoulder width apart suspended about a foot away from the wall. to get up they essentially do a muscle up into a squat to get up using the wall to help aid their balance.

I get the point with the girlfriend. I'm currently trying to convince my boyfriend to get a futon for the new apartment, because it would help with my back pains.
The air circulation is not a downside. For example: you roll a futon everyday, air it out couple times and turn it here and there. You can check on how to handle that on the Internet. The mold thing is not a problem, because it doesn't occur when you handle it right. :)
