    This makes me think back 100 years, before video, TV, radio, CD or records, when many people's main experience of classical music would be through weekly Town Hall organ concerts, massed choirs giving stirring performances of Handel's Messiah, brass band concerts and the occasional orchestral concert. A worthy reminder of a fine tradition.

    Another incredible concert in these difficult times! Elgar's 'Nimrod' is one of my favourite pieces, and Jonathan plays it quite beautifully. Dedicating Widor's 'Toccata' to his mum, who could not have it played at her own wedding, was a lovely touch at the end!

    Since Tom is not only an accomplished pianist, writer, animator, photographer and trumpeter, why not have him play the trumpet with Jonathan on the organ for one of the trumpet voluntaries? That would be amazing. I'm not sure that your home music room could contain the harmonium and the trumpet within the walls!

    I keep coming back to this one, particularly for the Trumpet Voluntary, which has a habit of getting stuck in my head at odd hours. I love how many other organists leave the trumpet line to an actual trumpet, but Jonathan just switches on his third backup motor cortex and adds it to his hands' to-do list. :)

    Today (July 18, 2021) I have finally caught up with this concert, and so wish I had listened sooner! Everything was a joy to hear! I confess, I don't see what the fuss is about with Nimrod, though. It just doesn't thrill me the way the rest of the pieces here do. To me, it's nice, but a little bland. Nevertheless, this program, on this superb organ, played by Jonathan and recorded by Tom, is exquisite, stirring and uplifting! Widor's Toccata is always the perfect ending! If I could go to England, Albion's is the first organ I would go to hear. Thanks to all who made this concert possible! 💗🎹🌞

    • @epincion
      @epincion 2 года назад +1

      In my opinion the fuss over Nimrod relates to the intense emotional associations from the that its become inextricably linked to the ceremonies up and down the land to honour the war dead on Remembrance Day (11th Nov) which was originally started post WW1 but is now for remembering all wars.

    • @Video7Rose
      @Video7Rose 2 года назад

      @@epincion Well, thank you for that explanation! I can understand that the piece has an historic, emotional attachment for people, especially if they have been associating it with one occasion all their lives. I never formed any such attachment, and was unfamiliar with Nimrod until recently, anyway. It's a fine piece, but I am more moved by the rest of the program.

    Your Fauré a bit rushed and cold, the Boëllmann a tad faster than the traffic would bear. But everything was divine. The spirit of George Thalben-Ball, W.T. Best and Edwin H. Lemare lives again in you! BRAVO!
    And thank you again for NOT loading us down with endless, tedious ORGAN LITERATURE! Scheidt, Schein and Scheidemann have plenty of expositors, but you're leaving them all in the dust ;-)

    • @epincion
      @epincion 4 года назад

      I was struck by your remark; 'the Boëllmann a tad faster than the traffic would bear' so I went back and listened again to it being played by the great French maestros Michel Chapuis and Marie-Claire Alain .
      Playing one of the great baroque French organs (Riepp organ at Dole) Chapuis tempo is just as fast as Jonathan's in this recital. Playing the romantic CC at St Sulpice Mme Alain is indeed slightly slower. I guess its the personal choice of the interpreter.
