There will never be another musician with this magical voice. His art will live forever.

No one brought out the best of Lanegan better than Mike Johnson.

It's kind of disappointing that Mark didn't discuss their collaboration much in his book, I was really hoping to learn more about their process.

@@D-Fens_1632 as I kind of answered below, i see Johnson as Lanegan's Musical Director. He organised, arranged and played on the lot. It took a few years for it to sink in that this was the case. When we went to see Lanegan live Mike was the support act as well as guitarist and band leaderl!! I was fanboying like crazy. So happy. Singing along and he's sitting in front of me. That was special.

@prestwickpioneer3474 Sounds awesome. That's always been my impression, I never thought of Mark as a guy who sat down and composed music on an instrument, he was a word man. He probably offered suggestions for feel, or hummed a melody in his head, but my theory is that Johnson more came to Mark with all of this instrumentation and just put his words to it. As more time passes I've really come to see Johnson as one of our most unheralded songwriters people should talk about more.

    Oh I remember your voice
Turnin' around and around and around in my head
Now it's just like you said
    Everything inside is dead

Cheers for this. Lanagan's music has brought me so much enjoyment & I want to thank him for it so thanks big man & I hope your resting easy. You were a shining light in this gutter of a world & it's a lesser place without you in it.

The Mike Johnson years were the best. I personally think he probably wrote most all of the music for Mark's words on those amazing early Lanegan albums, making him one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

@@D-Fens_1632 agreed a million times. Eclipse is one of my fave songs. I don't care that its a dirge. Its wonderful. "And I guess that's how I know I need you now". Year of Mondays is so good. And the template for what happened. Its mostly the same band and guest artists. I'm in no doubt that the greatness of their work together is because of him. Mike is active on Facebook though. He lives in France. Sometimes talks about this era. Seattle seemed to ignore him and he should have been much more successful.
