      That's funny how you mention the strategy of using one earbud so that you keep the left ear (or just the ear exposed to traffic) unoccupied because I've been doing that somewhat instinctively for whenever I go jogging. I really don't like the idea of sealing off all environmental/ambient sounds around me while I'm doing some sort of physical workout outdoors; I tend to get completely absorbed by the activity and as a result, dangerously oblivious to my surroundings. I like the idea of open headphones but not enough to replace the single earbud use method, especially when you can configure your audio settings to have 100% sounds levels travel thru either side.

  • @TheVerge
    @TheVerge  3 года назад +294

    Cut for time: ambient mode. It's an option! But I don't like it because it...
    1. Usually creates WAY too much wind noise
    2. I guess I'm paranoid enough that I'd rather just have an open ear than trust an ambient mode from software
    Anyway wanted to mention that, thanks for watching! - Dieter

      And that surprised me as well. My Sony wh1000xm3 have that issue when there is a lot of wind.
      The 2 times I biked with the airpods pro, it was no issue.

    Fun fact: the Galaxy Buds Plus actually switches to mono if you put the other bud in the case. That way, you're not really losing half of the sound. Also if you want bonus outside sound in that one ear, you can turn on ambient sound and it works well (so long as it's not on extra high cause you'll be hearing the wind)

  • @pranavm9550
    @pranavm9550 3 года назад +1

    Oh considering the fact that I do Bike 50 miles per day... I use the EarPods wired lightning earphones... It lets the outside sound come in since it doesn't clog up the ear. But at speeds greater than 15 miles per hour, I hear the wind more than the music from the earbuds or traffic! Could someone recommend a better set of buds, I am currently looking at the beats flex and the one ear technique Deiter talks about, but if I could maintain the stereo it would be great!

      @King0fHero 3 года назад +1

      I agree that he should have at least mention it, but the problem I realised with my own earbuds (Jabra Elite Active 65t) is that while for going on a run this feature is mostly fine (you hear the wind only a little bit amplified and your surroundings are drowned out unless you listen to your audio on a lower level), on a bike it is a whole other story, because the noise that the wind creates by hitting the microphones way faster is unbearable and you can't really enjoy your audio nor pay attention to other surrounding sounds

  • @SteveOnotsky

I've tried all sorts of combos and ended up with Aftershokz plus this little fuzzy (dead cat) material wraps on the helmet straps near my ears to cut the wind noise. I’ve got the Samsung beans. It’s a surprising solution for this issue.
    The hype of it being noise cancelling is BS, so the price tag is BS.
    BUT!! If you get it cheap, it’s a pretty good overall, the sound is pretty good. Turn off any isolation and cos there’s so much sound leak, it’s perfect for this issue without any thing hooking over your ears.
    I got mine free and it turned out to be a really good set when u need to hear your surroundings.

    Aeropex is also good for running coz they don't bounce off/around. Aeropex is the only model that's water proof (for cleaning, not swimming). Aftershokx has good customer service. Mine started to rattle after 6 mo. Online warranty replacement was easy & came in 5 days.

    Conversational review is the best type and Dieter and others on the Verge (BECCA!) excel at this. The best example in a while has to be Nilay doing the 12 pro review. In the beginning he jokingly states that the difference with 4G and 5G is 1 more G and you hear Becca yell "That's not how it works!" and Nilay replies right back to the camera "That's not how it works.".

    Would interesting to know what microphone quality (if they have microphone, other than the helmet?) was like for taking/making the odd call.
    I like your gravel bike Dieter 👍🏼

    I use the AirPod Pros with Transparency mode on. You just learn to be careful with the stems. I got a nice fit, good sound quality and I can hear the world around me.
