I think there has been a lot of confusion about this issue in general. My college boyfriend (the 90s) and I had the same conversation. He was Catholic and said that only Jewish people circumcise boys. I had to explain to him that it was common practice in the US to circumcise regardless of religion. It was embarrassing. It is a little less common now, but still common. Frankly, I think it is abuse at this point since we have sanitary conditions that do not make it necessary any longer. There have been changes in the stance on it in most other western countries. Of course, if it is for religious reasons, but just because?

Even for religious reasons - it's still genital mutilation done to a non-consenting child, severely f'ed up no matter how people try to justify it and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
There simply is no legitimate reason to be f'ing with kids genitals at all, period.
Unless the exceedingly rare case when there's a legitimate medical reason and it's absolutely necessary.
Which btw "phimosis" usually isn't, only in very very rare cases, or gender surgery on minors some are pushing for just as well.
