I found this channel not too long ago, and I will always remember Matt for getting me into magic in Joplin, MO forever ago. You helped make my first standard deck and to this day I still play commander and enjoy the format moreso using this channel and the sight to help better my deck building.
I play Myrel Stax and Tocatli Honor Guard is *essential*. It's more of a cEDH include than casual however. I'm fine with losing my Recruiter if they can't Thoracle/Dockside.
It hurts me that Esix and Adrix/Nev are as similar on Edhrec as they are... It's absolutely the precon effect. Esix deserves its own buildaround, a lot of the stuff that Adrix wants are just *bad* in Esix, and that's not even getting into the realities of having a 6 mana bomb, that dies to removal, that gets *one* opportunity in a round to do its thing, and the thing it wants to do is often at *least* an additional 4 mana... Esix needs more love and more people experimenting with it! Hoping one day to see Joey tackle my fractally boi in a vid 😊
I have a mono black discard deck that can be helmed by either Tiny Bones or Tergrid. With Tiny Bones as commander, the deck is fair and fun, Tergrid makes the deck oppressive and mean, without changing anything but the commander. Same case with mono red Goblins; Krenko Mob Boss makes the deck stupid and quick but switching out to Pashalisk Mons slows the deck down and creates different play patterns.
Switching comanders is a great way to power up/down a deck, or even just to refresh a stale deck. I have a Kothophed, Soul Hoarder list. To power up, I use K’rrik. To power down, there’s a million options within the same strategy: Lim-Dûl the Necromancer; Lorcan, Warlock Collector; Gisa, Glorious Resurrector; Chainer, Dementia Master. PLUS they’re all already within the deck!
I don’t know if anybody else does this, but every commander deck I build has at least four or five legendary creatures that could be the commander. It really helps with power level, and the play style can be similar between different commanders but the power/nastiness Definitely changes 😊
I call them my "lieutenants" haha but they are commanders that fit in the deck but can also be switched out to be the main commander. It makes the deck feel different everytime.
Cool, me too for most decks I brew! I never found a term for this deck concept. I call it 'choose your commander', so I put "(CYC)" in my deck names. Does it have a name in the commander community?
I have a couple decks that do this but on a larger scale, more like 10-15 possible commanders. A Selesnya tokens and a Gruul punch. I could choose one to fit a certain power level, but I usually just start flipping cards over until I hit one, and that's my commander for that game.
Favorite channel, great episode discussion as always! I have only ever changed commanders for two decks. The first one was really hard for me and that is my Pinger deck. I ran Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind as the commander and he still feels like the commander. The deck FEELS izzet. But I needed more untapping enablers so I changed the commander to Riku so I could add green for cards like Seedborn Muse and Quest for Renewal. The deck plays way better now but if I ever have the chance to turn it izzet again with more blue redundance that could replace the green cards, I will. The second one was less about the 99 and more about the commander themselves. I had a Yidris spellslinger deck with a bunch of cards that cared about me casting instances and sorceries. Then Veyran came out and I knew I had to have her as the commander. I love harmonicon commanders and build every one that comes out. I lose a few cards like Professor Onyx, but it was worth it. And then I got to brew a whole new deck with Yidris, which was traps. So I did not feel like I lost anything with this one, but gained another deck I would not have sought out otherwise.
To respond to Matt's challenge the stats: I bet a big reason why Tocatli Honor Guard is seeing play in Myrel, Shield of Argive is because of cEDH. THG stops dockside, thoracle, and more. It can be worth it because creature ETB effects in mono-white cEDH stax aren't as common as in casual.
I think a good example would be a Ashling the Pilgrim deck to the new Auntie Blyte Bad Influence deck, both are mono red that rely on a +1/+1 voltron theme, but a LOT of the support cards for Blyte are very unique to her. That's just me personally though
I changed Elsha to Kykar once to see what that would result in, and I kept wanting to check my top card. Elsha was my first Commander deck, so it is hard to avoid. BTW, can you do an Upping the Average for Elsha of the Infinite?
Great to see another Elsha lover here!!! Come join the discord and talk about Elsha with everyone!!! Also, absolutely agree with you - I personally don't think Elsha and Kykar are the same at all. Each commander incentivizes you to do different things, due to the nature of their payoff. That's my own take, at the very least
Thank you Joey for that rule nonbo challenge with Velomachus and most extra combat sorceries. The same thing applies to Aisha of Sparks and Smoke/Ken, Burning Brawler : the free spell comes from your hand instead of the library, but you still cast stuff during the combat step that isn't meant to.
A while back I had a Ghave, Guru of Spores deck that I swapped to a Marath, Will of the Wild deck. Other than the manabase and swapping black to red cards, a huge portion of my deck stayed the same and they both played differently from eachother.
I moved my Kess deck over to a Vial Smasher/Sakashima deck and at first they were similar but now it's big spells and copy vial smasher as many times as I can. I also like to double the ability itself so I can do more damage.
One of my favorite decks I have built is Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith partnered with Keskit, the Flesh Sculptor. It's a rakdos artifact aristocrsts deck that wins off of generating a bunch of cheap artifacts or artifact tokens then saccing them for value. Toggo and Keskit provide early artifact generation, as well as a sac outlet/card selection which helps the deck get ahead in the early game. So many times have I tried swapping the commanders out to incorporate another color and each time I went back to Toggo/Keskit. I tried mardu with Jan Jansen, but the deck malformed into a combo deck focused around Jan. Then I tried grixis to incorporate blue artifact matters cards and just didn't have fun. Even built a Breya version that still didn't satisfy me the way Toggo/Keskit did.
I loved my shorikai vehicld tribal deck, but found the play patterns super boring. I was already playing Urza high lord artificer and some urza themed cards in the 99. Recently swapped out shorikai for Urza, lord protector and love the change. The vehicles come out faster and i get to play the meld minigame. Now it's one of my favorite decks to bring to the table.
I recently made a Preston The Vanished deck that can run 3 different commanders with the exact same 99. You can run Preston, Abdel Adrian with Far Traveler Background or if you want to annoy everyone Elesh Norn MOM. It’s a lot of fun!
My brother actually leans into this concept - he has a simic deck that alternates between using Imoti, Vannifar, and Volo + Raised by Giants, and the whole deck is one big puzzle about how to make those three different commanders all fit one competitive deck.
I built Melek after wanting to do so for years, and it was super fun, but I swapped in Eruth and the deck went from “fun with the ability to make some big turns” to “ridiculously fast and consistent”. It was literally a straight up swap with no additional conditions. The value oriented build up to a big turn playstyle that Melek played to automatically required me to run a whole bunch of cantrips to double up and dig deep, and the rituals I used to cheat Melek out fast just made the deck able to blow up and go off incredibly rapidly and with way more consistency. It’s nice since Melek just wasn’t fast enough to keep up with the playgroup, although now to be fair, the deck might be a little bit too fast.
Giada and Lyra makes a lot of sense because I have a mono white angel deck and replaced Lyra in the command zone with Giada. Giada seems to just be a lot safer of an option because she helps smooth your mana curve and is easier to recast, but doesn't throw as many red flags to grab removal for some reason, whereas Lyra drew lots of removal and life gain hate from my opponents for some reason.
Once upon a time, my first Commander deck was an Aurelia, the Warleader deck that was trying to be three things at once. I was trying to make it into an Angel, Human, Soldier deck, but of course, it just did not work. So, I decided to try and make that deck into a Batalion-style deck with Aurelia at the helm, thinking that her doubling combat would be great. Unfortunately, I found a new problem in that Aurelia, on her own, was winning me games, and I w did not succeed with the go-wide strategy I wanted. So, as it stands as I write this comment, I split that progenitor deck into two decks. Tajic now helms at the Battalion deck, and Aurelia is in an Exulted, Angel Trible Voltron deck. The more relive it thing here is that the change from Aurelia to Tajic was seamless and did not cause much of a shift in the 99. And that deck is not a powerhouse, unlike the sister Exulted Aurelia deck, but it holds such a sentimental value to me that I have a hard time letting it go. I now have an Ishin, Two Heavens as One deck that is treading similar ground as the Tajic deck, and I'm having an existential crisis over it. Anyway, that is my story related to the latter half of this podcast episode. Thanks for reading my comment.
I have an Esix deck and yeah, I bought the precon and upgraded it, rather cheaply I might add, I started with 10 cards for around 30 bucks and then it went from there. I like playing it. even on a budget, an Avenger of Zendikar does massive work here. I once made 10 Avengers, sadly I was without haste and they managed to kill them off before I got to my turn, but it was fun. it's funny you bring up switching over. I am in the process of revamping almost all my decks, I want to try new ones, so my Edgar Markov deck might become an Isshin deck, they have very little in common, except that I want to use the mana base and maybe a few value cards like smothering tithe and such. I want to switch because I want a different playstyle, so to speak. my Golgari elf deck will be turned into Joey's Baba lysaga deck with a couple of spicy changes, then I can reuse the mana base and some ramp spells and ditch the rest. I want to play different decks.
Honestly I hope they don't change rats or slivers much because I love the idea that I can have three/four potential commanders for a deck and switch them depending on what I'm feeling. In the same vein y'all should do best multi-commander and/or hidden commander decks. Like Balmor for example. Balmor is the commander but you have Veyran, Adeliz, Jori, etc. as commanders and it almost feels like the commander tax doesn't exist once you get established.
I had a Zada deck that was just too powerful. I also had a Veyran deck that focussed on Guttersnipe effects and was also too consistent and powerful. They were also both spell slinger decks. So I made a Zada style Veyran deck that is powerful but a little less reliable.
So I had a brago deck which I turned into a dennick deck because I didn’t like how oppressive brago was and if brago got killed I didn’t get to do anything, I thought azorious aristocrats would be cool but I didn’t like it because if you couldn’t flip over your commander the deck didn’t do anything and the deck could basically only win via combo so I turned it into a Bane lord of darkness deck which has been really fun because bane also gives you the ability to bluff which creates fun interactions
Every Simic Landfall Commander just look the same to me. Play Lands and Draw cards in slightly different ways, or just the same ways but less powerful than the top Simic Landfall Commander. And more colors outside of Green really need more access to shut down Landfall, and destroy Lands without just nuking the entire board to a point where only the Landfall deck is going to be able to rebuild fast enough to make a comeback.
Both of the Kozilek's are named appropo for a lawyer, what screams 'Lawyer!' harder than 'butcher of truth' as a sobriquet? Well, maybe 'the great distortion', that'd be about the most lawyer-without-provably-being-a-lawyer... though now I want an Un-Kozilek that's a lawyer.
I’m a spotify listener and i came all the way over here because i couldn’t contain myself - JOEY - they really should’ve KELPT everything sealed. you would’ve 2 for 1’d on puns
I wanted to make a marchesa deck the monarch one but I already have a Isshin which is actually have very similar cards so didn't wanted to s duplicated or similar deck
Man I really would like to know if there is a way simple way to get data like this. I have some decks I don't run much but if I get a new commander and trade out 10 cards maybe I'd play them again
I don't think Esix should be built that similarly to Adrix and Nev. A&N want to produce relevant tokens incrementally while Esix wants bursts of irrelevant tokens with a strong copiable creature on board. Esix wants Master of Waves, A&N want Koma. Esix wants Topiary Stomper, Risen Reef and Aether Mutation, A&N want Tendershoot Dryad, Progenitor Mimic and Sandwurm Convergence. Esix wants Avenger of Zendikar much more than A&N do.
Relentless Assault and Seize the Day don't completely whiff. They'll still untap your creatures. That rules issue why I had to cut those for my Surge to Victory combo kill, though. BTW, I went from Tomorrow to Niv Mizzet to Kalamax and each time the main draw was adding a color. I'm really curious if I'll be adding black or white to my spellslinger combo deck someday.
I was really expecting a segment going over the deck's worth of Boros Equipment commanders but it wasn't even mentioned. I'd love to see if an overload of options also has any effect on deck building
Are we really so down on decks that try to set rules and control to board, anyone who has played any 60 card format has come across similar. I quite like playing against a well built stax deck as long as the pod power is good, it's a puzzle to solve.
I found this channel not too long ago, and I will always remember Matt for getting me into magic in Joplin, MO forever ago. You helped make my first standard deck and to this day I still play commander and enjoy the format moreso using this channel and the sight to help better my deck building.
Glad you're sticking around! Hope life is going well for you Darin!
Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, would definitely be a lawyer
I don't know, lawyers are pretty great at distortion
That’s how I think of my rograhk in the rograhk and thrasios brew I have. He’s the bad lawyer and thrasios is the judge who’s tired of his shit
I play Myrel Stax and Tocatli Honor Guard is *essential*. It's more of a cEDH include than casual however. I'm fine with losing my Recruiter if they can't Thoracle/Dockside.

As always, it’s great tuning in, love you guys, especially when I get to listen to Joey shenanigans!
I’ve ended up in sort of a ship of Theseus situation with a few of my older decks. If nothing of the original decks remain, is it even the same deck?
Matt missed an opportunity to make an "All Will Be Juan" joke in that patreon shout out intro
As an esper control player I'll have you know I have many friends! Okay, only 3 but that's still enough to get a commander game started.
Switching comanders is a great way to power up/down a deck, or even just to refresh a stale deck. I have a Kothophed, Soul Hoarder list. To power up, I use K’rrik. I always wanted to build a Teysa Karlov Tribal deck, where i could switch the Teysa at the helm and it would still work.

1:05 Matt's reaction to Joey's joke 🤣

the seal joke was snappy joey :)
Question: does the shared percentage include having the commander from one deck in the 99 of the other deck and vice versa?
I loved my shorikai vehicld tribal deck, but found the play patterns super boring. I was already playing Urza high lord artificer and some urza themed cards in the 99. Recently swapped out shorikai for Urza, lord protector and love the change.
The vehicles come out faster and i get to play the meld minigame. Now it's one of my favorite decks to bring to the table.
I actually run liesa, Shroud of Dusk as my angel tribal deck.
I was very surprised that tatyova and aesi didn't make the top ten, until Dana brought up the precon factor. That's probably what caused it
I recently made a Preston The Vanished deck that can run 3 different commanders with the exact same 99.
OMG... I had an AWFUL weekend but the porkchop in the pocket comment made my whole week. Thank you Dana lol
I built Melek after wanting to do so for years, and it was super fun, but I swapped in Eruth and the deck went from “fun with the ability to make some big turns” to “ridiculously fast and consistent”. This name though

Anyway, that is my story related to the latter half of this podcast episode. Thanks for reading my comment.
Hello and welcome to the EDHRECast.
My first deck was Jori En, Ruin Diver, I changed her for Veyran, voice of duality a couple of years latter
I have an Esix deck and yeah, I bought the precon and upgraded it, rather cheaply I might add, I started with 10 cards for around 30 bucks and then it went from there. Great distortion is just so much better though. The counterspell ability is a clutch.
Definitely better as a commanader, just overall more interactive.
I had a Zada deck that was just too powerful. I also had a Veyran deck that focussed on Guttersnipe effects and was also too consistent and powerful. They were also both spell slinger decks. So I made a Zada style Veyran deck that is powerful but a little less reliable.
Great episode, but I think the top 10 similar commanders excluding tribal ones would have been a more interesting start.
The "Azorius Fun Police" analogies 💀
Last month I built a Minsc & Boo Threaten deck, I kinda wanna see it against Dana’s Fling version.
I actually cut Tocatli Honor Guard while building because it shuts down a lot of the deck. It just didn't feel good.
Y'all should try Sarevok with Noble Background. It's a really weird Orzhov control deck.
That zoo should have gone to "Walls-R-Us".
Is the overlap data visible to users somewhere on edhrec?
Both of the Kozilek's are named appropo for a lawyer, what screams 'Lawyer!' harder than 'butcher of truth' as a sobriquet? Well, maybe 'the great distortion', that'd be about the most lawyer-without-provably-being-a-lawyer... though now I want an Un-Kozilek that's a lawyer.
Real question here: Does Matt hate vigilance boi because he can't turn them sideways?
I’m a spotify listener and i came all the way over here because i couldn’t contain myself - JOEY - they really should’ve KELPT everything sealed. you would’ve 2 for 1’d on puns
I wanted to make a marchesa deck the monarch one but I already have a Isshin which is actually have very similar cards so didn't wanted to s duplicated or similar deck
Man I really would like to know if there is a way simple way to get data like this. I have some decks I don't run much but if I get a new commander and trade out 10 cards maybe I'd play them again
I love how all the segues get stolen this year!
The price for slowly attaining the dad joke power surely.
Also, play Liesa extort tribal! My friends don't let me play it anymore.
Liesa extort is awesome. I added ankh of mishra to mine for some extra brutality and it works great
It’s almost like a lot of people go to the same website to get their deck building ideas. -Echo
What's the best way to challenge the stats these days? I know people used to be able to send them in through email
Esix wants Avenger of Zendikar much more than A&N do.
henzi toolbox and Kresh I switch commanders all the time
Tribal commanders have overlap, what a surprise.
Is that a Juan Gonzalez reference? 4:00
Someone else is a baseball fan
Of the infinite IS the deck that became kykar for me
I. Am. Liking. This. Video. I. Am. Leaving. A. Comment. Feed. The. Algorithm.
I love these dudes but I hate how I have to fast forward 5 mins every video when I'm at work lmao
It definitely is Rutabaga your neighbors
JUST SAY SLIVER TRIBAL!!!
Jeez Matt your jokes really Turnip up
Are we really so down on decks that try to set rules and control to board, anyone who has played any 60 card format has come across similar. I quite like playing against a well built stax deck as long as the pod power is good, it's a puzzle to solve.
If you're building Hivelord the same as overlord, you're building that sliver deck incorrectly.
it’s not the first sliver and also the bottom line is the best slivers are fairly consistent across the different options
wish these were less scripted and more of just conversations
