Hello Mel, I had a similar issue with fault code on diagnostics that point to fault on two glow plugs but it actually turned out to the the glow plug relay module and it’s a easy 5min test with continuity tester. Two of the four copper strips inside the relay module had burnt out so two plugs were not getting any power. I did a video showing what had happened. 😊 good luck

Hay buddy yeah I found one of the internal fuses in the glow plug really was bad that led me on to finding the faulty plug I have now changed the glow plug and the relay thanks for taking the time to comment I’ll go check your video now 👍🤓👍

Soaking the plugs down for a couple of weeks is the secret. Then I make sure the engines up to temp before attempting removal. I spend a few minutes working the plug with some Plus Gas and wind them out by hand. Great job 👍

The finest release agent in the world is a 50/50 mix of acetone and atf.
Ceramic grease or anti seize grease is better than copper grease. Copper grease hardens with age. However something is far better than nothing.
Glow plugs are an integral part of efficient running. They don't just work on a cold start, they work all the time on modern diesels to improve combustion, fuel economy and clean running.
Dpf regen won't happen if glow plugs don't work even one. DPF's also clog up with glow plug issues.
The code is still there because you didn't turn the ignition on and off when instructed.

    Mel great stuff,
I got my glow plug replaced by a mechanic ,and when I got it home the no 2 glow plug was still showing as faulty,
I took it to a friend ,and he said the glow plug sensor was faulty,
I am looking into how much to get the glow plug sensor replaced,,as I have no idea what it even looks like.
The worst part is that if the sensor is the problem,I didn’t need to replace the glow plug,in all likelihood.

Mel you need a new glow plug control module as each glow plug is fused from that module and the fuses are soldered in, when your old plug shorted naturally the fuse for that plug would have melted and contrary to what people say it is not a mechanical relay switch >.<
These glow plug modules also use pwm (pulse width modulation) and vary the duty cycle even after the engine initially started to help with the warmup phase etc
    hope this helps you :)

Glad it worked for you though I did wonder if there were any other faulty glow plugs given your resetting experience. Like most I have a horror of breaking a glow plug and the use of WD40 or whatever ahead of time makes sense, as does some form of repeated light undoing torque. I had seen use of a battery impact "drill" suggested though you don't know exactly what torque the various settings would represent.

Are you sure the limp mode fault isn’t actually the vacuum pump? As you said it works with the brakes as well as the two actuators? Maybe the vacuum drops when the brakes are used and the actuator are under vacuum pressure. Just a thought hope you find the issue soon cheers Kev

Answer "No" but injectors do, but most don't bother and it works just fine with these mercs. most of the time your glow plug light will stay on if the one of the glow plugs fail, fit a new one and the light will go out when it should (after 30 secs or so), bad one the light stays on.

Some deep codes will only be removed with OEM manufacturers software. One option try a mobile mechanic, they sometimes have good code readers.

I'm desperate for anyone who has real experience with sprinters mine is a 2004 416cdi long wheel has been unusable for a year now just after I spent two years completing the conversion camper build and had to design it to fit two wheelchair spaces at the back. It has been in limp mode, hard cranking and no acceleration for a year. I've spent hundreds on it replacing the turbo actuator, fuel filter, high pressure fuel pump cam sensor, crank sensor, map sensor, on and on and had it back and forth to a range of mechanics who keep charging me diagnostics to not fix it. It's also had two leaks of tests which haven't shown to be the issue. I'm at my wits end and without fixing it I've lost thousands of pounds in value. There is no DPF, EGR valve or MAF sensor on this model. It has had air in the fuel lines a couple of times which has been cleared out but the symptoms will not go away. Can anyone please help!! I'm in Hertfordshire UK.

One of the best things you could do is invest in your own diagnostics and learn how to use it properly.
If I wasn’t so worried about losing my workshop before I finished my Vario build I’d offer to come and take a look and see if I could help you out but unfortunately rite now I’m in panic mode and working 7 days a week to get my van done if you don’t have any luck when I’m finished my van get back to me and I’ll see what I can do 👍🤞

@@BigVanSmallWorld Thanks Mel I have a basic reader and have spent hours and hours watching Sprinter videos including Florida van man and many others and messaging him trying to work out what the issue could be but every part I have had changed bit by bit when I think I've got a heads up hasn't resolved the issue. It's going into Intercounty trucks in Dunstable which is a Sprinter specialist on Friday so fingers crossed but I am not holding my breath. I am fully expecting them just to say they plugged in but didn't get any relevant codes then charge me "diagnostics" for guessing it "could be x or y or z" and then get it back in the same condition. I would have tried to deal with mechanics myself but I am not mobile enough to work for long periods of time or get down in awkward spaces etc. After I did the build I got rust issues and spent months dealing with them grinding filling sanding and then hand painting the whole van with rust oleum. Then suddenly the mechanical issues started which I am just not up to dealing with. I really appreciate your reply best of luck with your van I hope it all works out.
