  • Starting a new career can be a challenge. In many instances, we have the opportunity to learn from a mentor or manager who can guide us in the right direction. And while I serve as a mentor for financial coaches, few have actually experienced or witnessed a financial coaching session.
So I was thrilled when a member of our online community agreed to allow me to record a coaching session as I coached her around a financial decision she was trying to make. See, she had asked for input from our online community but received so many different responses she was actually further from a decision than before.
I hope you’ll tune in to this bonus episode and hear how we walk through Lydia’s decision. I share a bit of what pre-work I did before the session and why I approached the session like I did.
Please pardon the audio quality; this is the first of what I hope to be a number of examples of what a coaching session looks like in real time.

I love that you acknowledged that we all have different privileges. I think that’s an important element that’s not often considered when thinking about a personal financial situation. ❤️ Looking forward to listening to the entire episode,

You mean we're not all the same and don't have all the same opportunities?!? :P Can't wait for you to listen to the rest Betty!

Excellent session. 🤗 I really appreciate how you allowed the client to talk thru her thoughts and feelings. At no point in time did you impose your own opinion on the client. So often, as coaches, we tend to forget that coaching is all about what the "client" needs and not what we THINK the client needs. Talking thru the best-case and worst-case scenarios really helps our clients to prepare both their thoughts and emotions in advance, should either scenario unfold in their lives. WELL DONE!! 🏆 I would love my coaching sessions to be as fruitful as this one. Thank you to Lydia as well for allowing us to be the "fly on the wall". 😛

I am so glad you enjoyed the session. And you’re right- I’m not the one who has to live with the decision, the client is, so what I think they should or shouldn’t want is irrelevant! I appreciate you listening and taking the time to comment as well!

This was fantastic! Thank you for sharing and being vulnerable. I’ve been coaching for about 6 months now and your podcast/book has guided me.

Between reading the Financial Coaching Playbook and watching your Podcast episodes I feel like I'm in a DIY class.

Thank you Kendra! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and found it valuable. I'm curious if there were aspects that you hope to add to your own coaching sessions?

@FinancialCoachAcademy I loved the way you asked questions. There was only one question I was thinking about, which was hinted at but not directly asked. I would say, "You seem to leaning towards paying for the coaching session. In your heart of hearts how quickly do you need the coaching to bring in money? It may take more money to get your coaching business off the ground, how do you feel about that being a possibility?

@@kendrafriedland2226 Great addition! Love that question! I always think of other questions or scenarios we could explore after a session. Every time- but that's also why I think it's important to meet consistently with clients and not just one time. We can continue to dig deeper while planning out various decisions in even more detail!
