I couldn't figure it out either, but looking at them side by side in the description - it's the chapter 1 dash order with directions flipped matching the symbols below the torches (4th order is implied by extension from the first three). normal horizontal flip vertical flip both flipped
In chapter 1, the monitor under the satellite displays different colours and the coloured birds move in different directions, from that you can tell which moves you need to do to reveal the crystal heart. The same moves apply to the coloured gems in chapter 6. The signs under each torch want you to perform the moves in a certain way. Credit goes to Jakez123 for figuring it out.

Thanks, I always saw these floating around and said "oh well thrt probably dont don't matter." But chapter 8 "the core" Required you to have all them to pass the levels.
Yeah you know, I’m not against puzzle elements in games like these, but the clues to find the secrets sometimes fall into pixel-seeking or into “fuck you” territory. The way to get them isn’t really telegraphed very well. Then most of the puzzles fall into some obscure code-decryption and it gets overcomplicated. I mean come on. In a platforming game as varied and creative as celeste they could had at least made the puzzles varied, not just making them a series of random dashes in the air. It’s definitely the weakest part of the game by far.
none of the dashes are random. the tv tells you the color bird order to follow and the birds spread out to tell you which direction to use. for the multiple dash segment later the torches show you the way to do that code from before. the first one is normal the second one is fliped horizontally next is flipped vertically and the last one that is wiped out is doing it flipped both h and v.
Nah, the problem with most of the puzzles is the fact they are exploiting really obscure mechanics which weren't implemented anywhere beforehand. Sometimes i could harldly tell am i doing things the right way or just struggle to break a game mechanics in desperate attempts find a way where there is none. For example puzzle at golden ridge- you need to duck and sit still on the bizzare white box to switch background and foreground. Altrhough i knew for sure that this box have something to do with the hearth, i never would guess that sitting still may be a solution. There are no other platforms in the game you can jump off from or any other usage for sitting down in the entire game, so this is hardly a logical solution. So i agree that this puzzling mechanics is the weakest part of the whole game.
for those who want a more concrete way of knowing where the hearts are, (try completing each stage to get there faster with checkpoints, if these stages aren't complete just go until you get to each part) 1 is in Forsaken City. Select the Crossing, (the place with that traffic light right next to your checkpoint) and make your way to the right. You'll come across a house, and since the player cuts to here, we'll use it as a landmark. Now simply follow the steps in the video to get there. 2 is in Old Site, begin at Start, and follow the steps in the video. Every time the camera shifts, your dash is regained, so use that to your advantage as presented in the video. 3 is in Celestial Resort, begin at Big Mess, (the place preceding all the books where Mr. Oshiro tells you you're slow) and after he says that, find him in the mess, and talk to him. After talking, make your way to the opening to the right of Mr. Oshiro. Go through the place, and get to the button. Press it, and follow the instructions in the video. Don't get distracted by the computer, it's gonna stay there. Once you're done just boot up the computer, finish a level or two if you want, go to the menu, and press Exit Pico8. 8:00 holy shoot this took me to many tries to do without the guide because i couldnt figure out how exactly to do it, i found the secret area where you stand but like i couldnt figure out what to do after, thank you so much for this guide.

Puzzle solution explanation: The birds in the first chapter give color meaning (see 0:32): White = Up Red = Up-Right Yellow = Up-Left Purple = Left Blue = Down-Right Notice the radar and the screen below it - they make the pattern: White-Purple-Blue-Red-Purple-Yellow. By matching the colors with directions and repeating the screen's pattern, you solve the first puzzle. The second puzzle (chatper 6, 4:50): The colros maintain their meaning. Notice the gems read from left to right give the same pattern as the radar. The first plate is just repeating the pattern. The second plate shows a mirror placed vertically. This causes horizontal movement to be flipped, but doesn't affect vertical. So White (=Up) stays the same, but Purple (=Left) is reversed and becomes Right. Red (=Up-Right) reverses horizontally to become Up-Left. The third plate shows a mirror placed horizontally. So White becomes Down, Purple stays the same, Red becomes Down-Right, etc. The last plate means full reversal of directions. Pretty cool puzzle :)
*"Eye of the storm" heart in chapter 4 is a reference to Mario bros 3, where if you crouch on a block long enough, you will drop into the background and can get a secret item BEHIND the goal*

You take the original order of the chapter 1 heart of Up, Left, DownRight, UpRight, Left, UpLeft and do that first. The symbol under the 2nd torch normally indicates reflecting a graph over the Y-axis. For this you need to reverse the directions of the inputs going horizontally (e.g. Right becomes Left, UpRight becomes UpLeft) So it would be Up, Right, DownLeft, UpLeft, Right UpRight. The Symbol under the 3rd indicates the same thing as before, except you reflect it across the X-axis, or reverse the inputs going vertically (e.g. Up becomes Down, UpLeft becomes DownLeft), so the order would be Down, Left, UpRight, DownRight, Left, DownLeft. The Fourth one I’m not sure how you would figure out without a guide, but you’re supposed to reverse both the vertical and horizontal inputs, becoming Down, Right, UpLeft, DownLeft, Right, DownRight.

I think the videos are designed and shown really well, but most people will not do everything their first go, so knowing what section to go in each chapter would be A BIG help. Literally no one does this and I don't get it.
The one on the golden ridge is a reference to a popular glitch in super Mario Bros 3 on the NES. Where, if you crouched on white semi-solid platforms for a while, you'd eventually clip trough the foreground and be in the background. Speedrunners use it a lot.
Dunno if this is in the comment section already, but it would be helpful for people to know which section these are in, like when you get to pick after you've beaten the level, cause you still have to know the game pretty well to know where these spots are in the level or complete the entire level over again, which is a little time consuming, especially if all you're trying to do is get to the c sides
All of these are so random, and even when you find them sometimes you don’t know what to do. But the one for Chapter 4 is fairly easy to get once you find it, but that’s only if you know SMB3
It's insane how many people in this comments section have no idea how most of this can even be figured out. The only ones I needed a guide on were the birds and the jewels. Birds because I didn't have the time to write the combination down, and jewels because there were a lot of them. (And also they involved the bird puzzle) The one in resurrections I had a friend tell me about, but I could have found it since by that point I had figured out the trick. I just hadn't expected it to be utilized at any point.
The only one I found by myself was Eye of the Storm - but even then I couldn't figure out the white platform, so I just used assist mode to cheat and give myself an extra dash. I must've spent 10 minutes in that room trying to figure it out.
It's the key you' re supposed to get. You just need to use that hidden red bubble to go AROUND the lock it's "intended" for so you can use it to open the secret area under that dirt square.
That stupid white block one. My friend who haven’t played the game that I was playing with said just sit there and meditate on the block and then we went thought the background and we lost our minds lmao
Even after looking at it I still don't get the first one -.- i was at that machine for a few minutes before leaving deciding it must be nothing xD i'm just imagining trying to do it in the dark days where i couldn't google everything
I just realized The white box at 2:30 could be a reference to super Mario bros 3 cause in smb3 if you duck while standing on a white box you go behind all the obstacles
Gojiro7 the game say just in the dream of chapter 2 you can get the heart, by dashing from frame to frame to make it. The game also include a hint for you by a poem.
Looks like the first four are the easiest so I'll do those so I can get the required amount to reach the summit and do the last level. I just got this on my switch and loved it instantly
Im mad cause i just threw away the piece of paper i had to figure out the bird code. Figured i didnt need it anymore. Not that i would have figured out to flip it and reverse it cause of the signs underneath, but still...

Thank you. No way I would have found some of these on my own. The screen transitions refreshing air dash in particular to climb higher.
Puzzle solution explanation:
The birds in the first chapter give color meaning (see 0:32):
White = Up
Red = Up-Right
Yellow = Up-Left
Purple = Left
Blue = Down-Right
Notice the radar and the screen below it - they make the pattern:
White-Purple-Blue-Red-Purple-Yellow.
By matching the colors with directions and repeating the screen's pattern, you solve the first puzzle.
The second puzzle (chatper 6, 4:50):
The colros maintain their meaning.

How on earth would you even figure out the torches without this tutorial?

Loving that SMB3 reference on the 4th heart
I'm so glad I learned all of Madeline's combos.
Francesco Maniero what does this mean
Thank you so much for making this content. It has very helpfull for me.
can you also make a video about all the b-side locations? that would be really helpful. thanks.
Up!
The white platform thing is a straight reference to Mario bros 3 where you crouch on it for a bit and it puts you behind the background
All of these are so random, and even when you find them sometimes you don’t know what to do. But the one for Chapter 4 is fairly easy to get once you find it, but that’s only if you know SMB3
I’ve beaten the game and I didn’t know those even existed.
Also thanks so much man this has been so helpful
Thank you Doctor Casual for my life
ThIs Is the Best tutorial i've ever seen, now i am going to the real ending!!!
Thank you very much for the video for the crystal hearts.
I just discovered that chapter 7 does not save your Crystal pieces if you leave the chapter.
My soul is dead.
Thank you very much!helped a lot
2:32 I love it.
It's insane how many people in this comments section have no idea how most of this can even be figured out.
The only ones I needed a guide on were the birds and the jewels. Birds because I didn't have the time to write the combination down, and jewels because there were a lot of them. (And also they involved the bird puzzle)
The one in resurrections I had a friend tell me about, but I could have found it since by that point I had figured out the trick. I just hadn't expected it to be utilized at any point.
Whenever you hit a low in life, just remember that I thought you need to get every heart
2:30 got hyped on the super mario bros 3 reference xD
Oml i wouldve never have found these
2:30 what a cool idea
The only one I found by myself was Eye of the Storm - but even then I couldn't figure out the white platform, so I just used assist mode to cheat and give myself an extra dash. I must've spent 10 minutes in that room trying to figure it out.
thank you this was very poggers of you
The reference in chapter 4 for mario 3 is the best reference in the game
I like the Mario 3 refrence in Chapter 4.
Very helpful bro, thank
I don't get the one in the mirror temple. Where do you start off there?
Thank you so much really helpful
where did you get the key for chapter 5?
02:50 Hey, where did you find that key?
It's the key you' re supposed to get. You just need to use that hidden red bubble to go AROUND the lock it's "intended" for so you can use it to open the secret area under that dirt square.
very very helpful video, thanks a lot.
I did the second one on accident without this video just because I was messing around
Lol me too
1:35 is THAT what the dust bunny things used to look like!?
Also try to wave dash when you are got impulse from that dash mechanism.
very helpful, thanks.
1000th subscriber poggg
thanks alot for this guide
2:36 I think you can just dash into the block and you will go right through
That stupid white block one. My friend who haven’t played the game that I was playing with said just sit there and meditate on the block and then we went thought the background and we lost our minds lmao
The eye of storm hearth is a cute reference to a super Mario Bros 3 speedrun
Even after looking at it I still don't get the first one -.- i was at that machine for a few minutes before leaving deciding it must be nothing xD
i'm just imagining trying to do it in the dark days where i couldn't google everything
screen flashes, then birds dash out
it's... it's literally simon says ._.
chapter 4’s crystal heart is the best without a doubt
"The one that is literally impossible to solve unless you have played a completely unrelated game from 30 years ago is the best one"
I just realized The white box at 2:30 could be a reference to super Mario bros 3 cause in smb3 if you duck while standing on a white box you go behind all the obstacles
It is.
Cool
how in the hell did you or anyone else figure out that cheat code to get the first heart XD
Gojiro7 the game say just in the dream of chapter 2 you can get the heart, by dashing from frame to frame to make it. The game also include a hint for you by a poem.
okay
the way the birds move is how they found out the code, they dash outwards in each direction and the satellite gives you the order
How do you get the water fall in chapter 3 to get to the heart? I do the chest but its blocked
It's simon says.
99% of the Hearts: need active exploring to get
1%: big brain time
😂😂
Looks like the first four are the easiest so I'll do those so I can get the required amount to reach the summit and do the last level. I just got this on my switch and loved it instantly
Do the gems on the final level save when u go to map?
looking at this 4 years later
im glad that the dudes with red eyes have outlines now
jesus christ
useless data here: Celeste ----> Light blue.
up left downright upright left upleft
God damn most of these are unfairly cryptic!!
Love the game and in my top 3 favorite of all time but MAN i hate most of these hearts..
HOW THE ACTUAL FUCK WERE YOU SUPPOSED TO GET THESE WITHOUT A GUIDE.
Chapter 5 Step 1:
Inexplicably spawn with key
on the crystal heart for the summit chapter, do you have to get all the crystals in a single run, or can you save and quit in between.
You can save and quit in between.
Im mad cause i just threw away the piece of paper i had to figure out the bird code. Figured i didnt need it anymore. Not that i would have figured out to flip it and reverse it cause of the signs underneath, but still...
