I can't be the only one that gets emotional watching these kinds of sessions. Seeing a bird stuck in one way for SO long make such great progress... I just can't help but feel overwhelmed with joy.
You present a confident Aura to the surrounding. I love how birds can pick up on that and in return it gives them confidence. You are truly a bird whisperer!
Once you realize you have to let them want to do something verses making them do something trust builds quickly. We see it in our birds everyday.....such a nice looking Amazon....we have an 16yr rescue orange wing and I think the Amazons get such a bad rap of being an overly aggressive bird. Ours can be a stinker once in awhile, but more often he is a sweet heart and just likes doing things on his own terms and needs space sometimes. Companions, not pets. Love your videos!!!
@@BirdTricks Cant wait to see them!!! My little orange wing is just the best....when they choose you as "the one" its just such a special bond. Ah you make it look so easy! It just goes to show how with the right guidance and clear training you can help a bird work through anything, and teach them any trick! 😍💞
I would also say that it goes to show how with the right guidance and clear training, you can help a *human* work through anything (and teach them any trick)!
I think he's just glad to have someone with confidence and that understands his language, to interact with. Seems like a lot of this is much more about training humans than birds. xD
Love seeing blue fronts! We have one who is about 35 years old. He is usually pretty sweet with us, although he goes back and forth liking me for a few weeks and then my husband. It's interesting. And he likes most of our friends, although he has tried to bite strangers in the past.
Been through this with my two BFA rescues. Billy was in the cage for 25yrs and after two years of consistency, love and support, he's only in his cage to sleep and is a totally different bird! Just taken on a female who lived in a pet shop for 20yrs, was rescued and then her Hoomin died, she refused to leave the cage for 9yrs!! She will fly AT you and attack. I'm only 2mths into rehabbing her. I wouldn't be without them. Yes, they're really hard work sometimes but I'd NEVER give them up! Not for anything! Even if I never get to a "perfect" place with them, as long as they're healthy and happy 😊
Nice video. My Blue Headed Pionus was cage bound. He passed last week. He was born in the 80s(like me). I had him almost 6 years. Introduced him to proper diet , avian full spectrum and real sunlight, and a proper cage (one meant for Amazons), instead of one meant for a parakeet and only two of the same exact type of perches. I know the damage to the feet that causes. I also taught him to fly/ or at least enabled him to by stopping the plucking/ and damaging of flight feathers. I took him to the Vet Dr. Laurie Hess, who in the tri state, is highly respected and has a book. You may be interested in, if you dont know her already. Not saying anything about your abilities . It's funny we are like little psychiatrist with are training of our birds! And slowly or quickly it works! Such as the birds have a healthy mentality/interactions with us! Great job Jamie♥️♥️🤣
You guys are the BEST with explaining why you do what you do. Like training birds to touch the stick instead of making them feel like you're making them touch the t stand is an incredible way of explaining things.
So happy that this little guy was able to let the barriers down for you and I hope that it continues for his humans. He's a beautiful companion and there's a sense that he really wants to do more interaction. Your work is amazing, blessings from Australia.
Wow, JamieLeigh! You did a fantastic job with Norm! You have special, calming energy that helps birds along with their training. I wonder why Norm chased Amber to attack her? Maybe Norm thinks of Rusty as his mate and needed to chase Amber away from him. Just a thought I had, as I was writing this about Norm chasing Amber. But you work wonders, JamieLeigh :))) You and Dave have a very special gift!!! Love, big hugs, birdie kisses. Barb, Beenie, and Baby spirit :))) PS. I sure hope Rusty and Amber are doing well with Norm now and the training!
Bravo! Well handled! I learn something new with each video -- this time, it was to make sure to also target the bird off the scary place. You are amazing!
Jamie, you are amazing. I was angry at the beginning of the video that he was afraid of coming out of his cage. I want to find the people that caused this and... but at the end of the video I was near happy tears because you successfully got him out of the cage. His body language changed so much, at the beginning of the video his bubble above his head said "OHH close the door, I'm scared", but by the end his bubble was "HEY, I stepped over here, where is my treat. Humm, if I go here do I get a treat?" as he moved back and forth on T stands uncommanded. You guys do such an amazing and great work, thank you for sharing it with so many.
my grandma has a cockatiel and he never leaves the cages, she even let the cage door open for the whole day but he's just sitting in there but he still interacts with her by repeating words or whistling a song she learned him. And watching almost all of your videos gives me the confidenc to try to do some target training so he can enjoy the time outside the cage :)
To be honest, I would be nervous around my pet too, if I knew it would seek me out to attack me. But I agree, it is not helping the relationship between bird and owner.
You know, I wish you guys could do follow up videos with owners you work with, to see how their at home progress is going for them after the training session. Would that be possible at all? Because this little fella I am curious how at home training is going for them and if he’s still trying to eat his human mama.
ITS.BRANDIE that kinda thing is pretty difficult to make happen unless the owners reach back out and book another session. @@BirdTricks I just got a blue faced amazon and had him for maybe 4 days at first he seemed ok would walk on my arm and shoulder now he doesn't want to leave his cage ..what kind of treats do yall use for target training? Figured I would try that ,he is 5 years old and the original owners gave him up so wasn't sure if he was depressed or what
My African grey parrot is the sweetest heart in the world but she has her moments where she demands attention and for some practical reasons, I can't provide that for her, she divebombs my head hahaha... then I simply find 5 min to talk to her and she becomes mellow and super cute again. I would say I have the opposite problem. My Chiku only uses her cage as a bedroom. That means she goes to bed at 9-10 and is let out in the morning at 9. If I need to go out she is free. For some reason, she becomes very quiet and still when she is alone. That is why I can't stay away for too long because she does not eat or drink when I am not around?
So we recently adopted a Sun Conure which we think might have been abused. I dont think any targeting training has been done at all on this 3 year old (by his body language). well, I started doing some additional training today around lunch with sunflower seeds. this was on top of his cage to start, an when he would get the treat I did the clicker. we did this 3 or 4 times and then started to work with the end of the targeting stick. he did the first one pretty well. then, it seemed to start getting harder for him and he would get frustrated. he then flew at my face and attacked my lip, flew back to his cage then attacked at my face again when I stepped farther back. he's been in the house only a few day and this is his 4th or 5th attack. I totally understand this is going to take time and patience. Here are my questions. 1) what is the right protocol when the bird is attacking? do i just stand there eyes closed and let him finish? or is it natural to jerk and protect yourself? 2) what is the right protocol when this behavior happens? do you try to target him back to the cage with a treat? or completely step back until he goes back into his cage. do you say NO? Just trying to understand what you do for these types of behaviors.
Hey I have a question! What's your daily routine? How do you guys keep all your birds trained? Do you have to go through all the tricks and training every day with every one of the birds? once every every week? Every once in a while on the whim? I know you guys train for your shows which probably requires vigorous training, but how about family pets? What do you recommend or is realistic? Especially if someone owns a lot of birds like 5-10? Because if that's every day then that would be 75 mins for 5 birds if its 15 minutes each. Thanks! Someone wanting to get way more parrots but not sure how demanding it will be to keep them all trained and tamed.
Mrs BirdPro.... is there any reason a wild bird would just fly into your house and "adopt" us? we had this happen to us this week with a wild mousebird. super interactive and sweet. sits on our shoulders (even the kids') and eats from us, etc.
I really need your help. I have an african gray that loves training, I am training him to flight recall, even if it is mating season for parrots everytime he flies to my hand he becomes hormonal what should I do?
I have a cockatoo going on 2. Originally, I was able to hold him. But now all he wants to do is bite me. Even when I first got him, he always runs away from me. I am so hurt and frustrated. I love him, but he always stretches his neck to bite me. I tried to do what is suggested in the videos, but I can't stop Max to bite me. He never bit me when I first got him. I wish I can train and give him a treat, again runs away once he is out of his cage........Help in need advice. Looks like a sulpher crested cockatoo.
I'm a little confused....You were able to hold him at first, but he ran away from you even when you first got him? Were you holding him while he was trying to run away? And have you tried giving him a treat while he's still in the cage?
My bird used to do so good, she is an Indian Ringneck. In the beginning she was doing so good with her training. I had gotten her to eat from my hand. But when we moved and I had to put her in a carrier she changed. She is fully flighted and will lunge at you from her cage when you replace her food and water, then she will fly and attack you. She bites hard enough to draw blood. What can I do. I love her to pieces but I even have to wear welding gloves to clean her cage now. What am I doing wrong.
I feel like that display case in the background would not be a great place to live. Fluorescent lights? I know I hate them! Thoughts? Completely non-bird owner/ learning EVERYTHING I can before getting a bird myself (like in a few years I think I’ll be truly ready) any advice or opinions welcome!
Ok so now you just need to train Amber, his owner, to always be ready to give him treats immediately when he does good. Because I can see this poor bird going right back to being fearful and wanting to stay in his cage if she keeps forgetting the treats
Sorry if I missed it but I'm not clear on what it was it that had gone wrong at home? Was it that he was targeting with aggression (biting, rather then touching)? What was it that caused him to lose confidence?
What would be the best thing to do when u have a parrot that hates u but love someone else 1 ) give it to the person it like and buy a new 1 2) keep the parrot and try my best to gain in love and trust and even if it does not trust and bond with me i still keep it as a pet as i am the owner and i bought it into my family
Hey. I wanted to tell u that ur videos have helped me build a base knowledge on how I want to take care of my bird. Seeing ur birds makes me really happy cause m also a bird enthusiast so good job!😋 if u don't mind, I have a few questions that, if answered, would really clear up my confusion and make me a better bird owner. In about two months, I'm getting an african grey. He's going to be 5-6 months old and I will be his first owner. Should I target train him? How will that benefit him? Should I use a clicker for this particular training only? Or for all types of training? Or should I not use a clicker at all and just praise him and give him a treat? I'll appreciate it if u answer my queries🥰☺ Love u❤❤❤
That is so wonderful! I don’t have any birds I would love to have one one day. I love watching your videos, how many hours did this process take with the beautiful Amazon?
One thing I see you guys stress is to not move the target stick once it’s presented. At 3:41 I noticed you ended up pulling the target back several inches more. What happened with his body language that made you realize you could push the boundary there when only a few repetitions before he wasn’t targeting without luring?
hi i have two budgies but they just WONT come out. they have only been in their cage for a month and its actually a new cage i dont know what to do. please help
This video was really interesting! One little constructive critique though, the fade-in and fade-out text was pretty distracting. I think mainly because it took too long for the full text to be readable. Keep it up!
Hi, I own a cockatiel I don't understand his body language unfortunately. He is not afraid of me at all, but he refuses to stay on my hand, he stands on it but constantly fly away and when I call him he doesn't come. But when a I turn back he comes on my head or my shoulder. So I am trying to understand is he playing or controlling me? 🤔 I am so frustrated 😢
Not sure if it's the same, but when I first got my cockatiel he only wanted to be on my shoulder. He would step up on my hand, then immediately rush up to my shoulder. I made sure good things would happen when he was on my hand, like treats and games, and over time he calmed down and now he often prefers being on my hand over my shoulder. When I first started introducing him to new people he would shoulder rush and only land on their head, so it was just him being nervous around a new person. After a few months with me he was cool being on my hand, and now he'll even recall to my hand! Personally, I think your tiel is just a little scared of hands. They're naturally scarier then shoulders and heads, since they move so much more, and a lot of birds have had bad experiences with them. Even ones you get as a baby.
Poor bird is in an environment with a jealous man. The cage offers protection from their arguments- I could go on and on but who messages their husbands shoulders instead of complimenting the bird !!
I need some help. I got two fisher lovebirds from a women. But they are very scared of me. I mean VERY scared. And I can’t hand tame them because they’re too scared... What should I do? nothing helps :((
This all takes time ! Every day you need to sit by their cage start say 4 or five feet and talk to them or sing to them in a couple of days move in a little closer and do the same talk to them do it for 10 or 15 minutes you want them to get use to being around them don’t move quickly or wave your hands around you want them to be calm do this till you can sit next to the cage and there not scared, after you can do that you can open the cage door and slowly put you hand by the cage opening, do it every day till the stop being scared, slowly put your hand inside and leave it there don’t move it around, let them get use to it being inside the cage , when you have it so there not scared you can get a bird perch and slowly get close to there chest if the still scared do rush it it all takes time when you can get them to “step up “ and say step up on the perch you can start moving your hand closer to the end off the perch until you can get them to step on your finger ! It all takes time , reward them with a treat each time they step up and good luck have fun ! 🐤🐦
I've commented before but never got a reply:( our Amazon been really needs help, She pools a lot on different surfaces screams Fri attention she's now currently attached to my brother and flies to him goes in his shoulder etc.Last fee days Thank God she's been ok.....she also flies like at me or with me when I'm going through the kitchen to the other room....i Hiw can I get her help?
My question is if she's had him for 12 years what does she keep on doing wrong LOL is nobody going to call it out now he can't leave the cage out of here there's something going on there
I have a terrified cockatiel that paces in the cage whenever you need to change his feeder bowl or open the cage door, I can leave it open and he'l pace around knowing he can get out but doesn't, he gets chaotic when I put more food in the bowl even if he's on a high perch, he'll drop down and pace. I tried the gentle approach but it doesn't work (offering a treat from my hand, he'll panic) I don't know what to do. (he came from a different owner and I don't know his backstory)
My Indian ring neck has lots of problems I don’t know if it’s from his previous owner not giving him much attention but he will not come out of his cage when I use a glove he likes to hop on it but when I use my hand without a glove he is afraid I tried giving him small treats but I get no response except going into the top corner of his cage
Pls help me my parrot won't even come out of the cage's door.....when i let the door open he just sleeps or cleans himself for a whole three hours.....what should i do
Don't know if you have a fix for this but do you know how I could get my pinnapple conure to stop following me ever time I leave the room or even his line of sight.

Mrs BirdPro.... is there any reason a wild bird would just fly into your house and "adopt" us? we had this happen to us this week with a wild mousebird. super interactive and sweet. sits on our shoulders (even the kids') and eats from us, etc.
This was so interesting to watch!!
Very nice!😀
Você é a melhor do mundo parabéns
Maybe the owners are a little afraid so he’s afraid ,he caught on extremely fast
My issue with it is how tiny it is....course I think that about most cages.
Amazing
Ok so now you just need to train Amber, his owner, to always be ready to give him treats immediately when he does good. Because I can see this poor bird going right back to being fearful and wanting to stay in his cage if she keeps forgetting the treats
Sorry if I missed it but I'm not clear on what it was it that had gone wrong at home? Was it that he was targeting with aggression (biting, rather then touching)?
What was it that caused him to lose confidence?
What would be the best thing to do when u have a parrot that hates u but love someone else 1 ) give it to the person it like and buy a new 1
2) keep the parrot and try my best to gain in love and trust and even if it does not trust and bond with me i still keep it as a pet as i am the owner and i bought it into my family
I'll appreciate it if u answer my queries🥰☺
Love u❤❤❤
Nice...
That is so wonderful! I don’t have any birds I would love to have one one day. I love watching your videos, how many hours did this process take with the beautiful Amazon?
Jeanine Hedgepeth this was a 3-4 hour class with all the birds being involved. 💛
One thing I see you guys stress is to not move the target stick once it’s presented. At 3:41 I noticed you ended up pulling the target back several inches more. What happened with his body language that made you realize you could push the boundary there when only a few repetitions before he wasn’t targeting without luring?
hi i have two budgies but they just WONT come out. they have only been in their cage for a month and its actually a new cage i dont know what to do. please help
is the toucan in the background a real toucan?? at the start btw
Thats really useful thank you
I just started watching.. What is the treat you’re using?
which treat are you useing plz tell me.
love form Dubai
This video was really interesting! One little constructive critique though, the fade-in and fade-out text was pretty distracting. I think mainly because it took too long for the full text to be readable. Keep it up!
Where did you get your clicker? I cannot find one that is target and clicker in one!
Lol try a Amazon who doesn't want a treat and full blown attack .
Poor bird is in an environment with a jealous man. The cage offers protection from their arguments- I could go on and on but who messages their husbands shoulders instead of complimenting the bird !!
What do you give the birds as a treat I’m just learning I have a red lord amazon 👍🇬🇧
I've commented before but never got a reply:( our Amazon been really needs help, She pools a lot on different surfaces screams Fri attention she's now currently attached to my brother and flies to him goes in his shoulder etc.Last fee days Thank God she's been ok.....she also flies like at me or with me when I'm going through the kitchen to the other room....i
Hiw can I get her help?
Ap M please email me at info@birdtricks.com 💖
My question is if she's had him for 12 years what does she keep on doing wrong LOL is nobody going to call it out now he can't leave the cage out of here there's something going on there
I have a terrified cockatiel that paces in the cage whenever you need to change his feeder bowl or open the cage door, I can leave it open and he'l pace around knowing he can get out but doesn't, he gets chaotic when I put more food in the bowl even if he's on a high perch, he'll drop down and pace. I tried the gentle approach but it doesn't work (offering a treat from my hand, he'll panic) I don't know what to do. (he came from a different owner and I don't know his backstory)
wonderfull
My name is Beth I had an Amazon blue her name was baby and she was sweet she was kind she would love loving and I am looking for another one
Pls help me my parrot won't even come out of the cage's door.....when i let the door open he just sleeps or cleans himself for a whole three hours.....what should i do
Where can I buy the clicker stick you are using?
Don't know if you have a fix for this but do you know how I could get my pinnapple conure to stop following me ever time I leave the room or even his line of sight.
Ross Hazlie I have a video titled something like “my sun conures won’t leave me alone” that’ll help you ❤️ it’s in my parrot training consult playlist as well as my collab playlists.
@@BirdTricks thanks so much love your vids
