I DUG an abandoned ‘88 Tercel out of the Michigan mud and got it to work. 5 months later I flipped, yes flipped it in to a ditch after slamming a curb. Rear axle was bent, front steering 30’ off axis. Drove
it for another three years. Toyota Tercel. The car for those that have no fucks to give.

    • @SHBazTBone

Kevin Quattro I learned standard on a ‘92 Tercel I bought from my friend for $100. That had been on it’s side and ROOF because of us “rallying” our cars in fields. Had around 240K when I bought it. Drove that go kart around for two years until the floor fell out of it.
Best little car I’ve ever owned. It was fun, it was bulletproof, got awesome miles, and just didn’t give a fuck.

Sounds like a 1999 Corolla. Bland as shit. Boring. Not fast or what a teenager wants.
But its loyal and reliable, with histories that you have been told about it from your family, and plenty of memories to make once you do own it. Like an old dog in a way. And when it finally dies, boy its that painful.
Anyways, ill buy myself a Peugeot 206 GTI because 140hp naturally aspirated 2liter manual subcompact hatchback sounds REALLY fun lol. Also, 7350rpm redline goes brapbrapbrap

The joyful racket it makes as it attempts to accelerate, says, "I'm a good boy, right?" It's just so eager to please. It was slow, not particularly good looking, and booring as hell. 10 years later when I sold it It had 215,000 miles on the odometer, and aside from tires, brakes, and oil changes the entire maintenance It required was one belt replacement, and 3 batteries. It deserves that scathing interior description. A coworker bought a new one and sold me his old Nissan Hardbody. I rode around in it a few weeks later after I'd sorted-out the problems with the Hardbody that were so bad the dealership wouldn't take it in-trade (particularly brake and ABS lights on the dash, it needed a full brake job) and frankly the Hardbody was far more comfortable both in ride and in interior comforts, despite being a five speed manual with hand-crank windows and having over a hundred thousand miles' wear on the driver's seat.
If they'd made the Yaris interior nice, it probably would have seen its exterior quirks and underpowered engine overlooked a bit. The seats on even a brand new one were low, hard, and shaped to not provide good back support. The lack of cluster behind the steering wheel was disconcerting. The inside was roomy for the size of car, but felt cold and uninviting.

I've got a 2010 Yaris. It's a hatchback with a manual transmission. It's even got crank windows in it.
It didn't have cruse control but I added it in (was incredibly simple to add)
A few things about the manual though, you aren't going to get 40 mpg all day. When everythings running perfectly I'd regularly get 38 but lately 35 has been good (probably winter fuel and whatnot)
But my manual does have a tachometer and it's pretty dang fun to drive too. The manual has lower gear ratios then the automatic. And will go up as fast as you can pretty happily in 3rd gear, which will take you to almost 90 miles per hour. But it does not like going any faster once you shift into 4th and I mean that makes sense, it's max speed is 110mph.
Mine I bought at 100k miles and it's up to almost 170k now after 2 years of delivering pizza and a 40 mile dayly commute for school. Then another 2 years of very light driving (I put 50k on that first two years and now I've added the 15-20k in the last 2). I've never had any significant issues with the vehicle and I think it's fantastic.

This is my car, finally! I've had mine since 2010, bought it with 13K on the clock. At 145K now, I've gotten in two major accidents, hail damage, hit multiple animals. The car is a miniature tank. I keep thinking I'll get rid of it...but it just won't die. I love it. It literally is the meme "Yaris, it's a car!"

RallyCross, also known as RallyX, is a type of car competition in the United States and Canada, sanctioned by Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). It is a timed event that involves solo driving on grass or dirt and can be considered "autocross on the dirt." As with autocross, the emphasis is on driver skill and handling rather than absolute speed, with frequent corners generally keeping speeds below 60 mph (100 km/h). In many ways RallyCross is to rally racing as autocross is to road racing.

Thanks for the fair review, I just bought a one owner well maintained 2007 Yaris 3 door hatchback with 5 speed manual transmission last week to have as a cheap car to drag around behind our motorhome when we travel. After a week or so of driving it around most days to shake the bugs out, I can confidently say it is not as bad as I thought it would be. Now sure it has 1/4th the horsepower, is slower, rougher riding, has less comfortable seats, than my daily driver, which is a Dodge Challenger SRT-8 with 6 speed manual transmission, but all of that was to be expected. Overall, in nearly every aspect it is not as bad as I thought it would be, being a 6'0" tall 200ish pound man, I was surprised how easy it is to get in and out of, how relatively comfortable the seats are (way better than my son's former car a 2008 Nissan Sentra), how responsive the little 4 cylinder engine is, even the manual transmission gear shifter felt better than any other comparable ecconobox I have driven. Sure it still feels like you are shifting a fork in a bowl of mashed potatoes, but at least with the Yaris it is a bowl of extra thick mashed potatoes. I suspect the 5 speed manual is a bit more peppy than the automatic, as it is rated with a 0-60 time of around 9.5 seconds, I have yet to take it onto an limited access highway, though I have had it up to 65 mph or so on a 4 lane highway, and I can tell that that is about the upper end of its happy speed, with the car starting to feel a bit light and squirrely even at that speed. Overall I think it should do a fine job for general tourist duty, grocery getting, etc. when we travel, and at under 2,300 pounds it would tow almost like it is not even there behind the motorhome.
So my vote for the Yaris motto is, Not as bad as I thought it would be.

You have not really _driven_ a Yaris automatic until you have maxed out using the 4-speed automatic like a standard. Toward a 90 deg corner, downshift to 1st through the corner itself; then quickly into 2nd is maxing out the autoshifter at its most refined. Scotty Kilmer said the standard shifter is to be preferred and that may be so for purists, but my first Yaris salesperson, a Quebec skier, (2006) put me on to shifting the automatic and I never looked back. Latest data, Yaris is the #1 selling car in Japan followed by the Corolla. Too damn bad Toyota doesn't sell them here anymore.

After she tinted the windows it looks great.

I owned this exact car, bought it brand new in 2008. Lovely dark blue. I don't care what anyone says, I loved this car. I firmly believe that it is sort of a spiritual heir to the original VW Beetle - cheap, affordable to own, great on gas, utilitarian while still having a quirky personality. The newer ones are just nice small cars. The 2007-2008 had that quirky look to them. I routinely got 30mpg, even thrashing it around town in traffic. With the rear seat folded down you'd be amazed what you can squeeze in the back. Nothing could go wrong...roll down windows, manual locks, side mirror you had to push into place, parking it in town was a joke, only a SmartForTwo could beat it in that respect. Only reason I sold it was I needed a bigger CUV, sold it to a buddy that kept it for a few more years then sold it to someone else.
