I wear an undershirt and often leave the top button undone where it shows for three main reasons. One being I don't have a lot of chest hair, but enough that some hairs do show. Second is those V-Necks really just feel odd, and make me uncomfortable, which I know you (Antonio) have said in other cases to wear what makes you comfortable as it makes you more loose and confident (the tie/bow tie question comes to mind for that statement). Finally, I was in the military, and one of the uniforms I was the utilities. Blue button up shirt that you didn't button that top button, and a white shirt under it, and it worked. Undershirt also showed in working whites (button up again) and the dress outfits. The main thing you have to worry about is make sure the undershirt, part that shows, is crisp and fits against the form well. So I suggest you make sure you buy one that will be a bit tight, and make sure the collar isn't fraying or wrinkled. The tighter fit will help at least against wrinkles.
Why did i miss this when i watched all the videos before...i have been waiting for this forever...i saw it from the site you mentioned...i've actually never worn undershirts...and i'm planning on sporting one starting this year...but the thing is nobody wears it in my society...but i don't want my shirts ruined...and this videos helped a lot like all your other videos...thank you sir
During one week this summer, I will try to watch all of your videos, from first to latest, and take notes. I can't watch an entire video without being so curious about one of the suggested videos that I can't resist clicking it, only to find another suggested video. The hunger for knowledge that your videos give is amazing. Thank you sir.
While I don't usually let my undershirt show when I wear a dress shirt, when I'm dressed casually, I like to pick a colored undershirt that matches or compliments the shirt I'm wearing. I wear a lot of plaid, and enjoy choosing an undershirt that accents one of the colors in the plaid, or that matches the base color.
Paul Ash Your undershirt should match the color of your skin. This may seem odd at first but even underneath a white shirt, a skin-colored undershirt will be less visible than a plain white T-shirt, especially in the areas between skin and T-shirt around your biceps and collar. Read more here: www.gentlemansgazette.com/undershirt-guide-to-wear-or-not-to-wear-one/
I personally think having the undershirt show when wearing flannel or more casual shirts is fine, though dress shirts are more formal and thus having the undershirt show is a clash of formality in that situation.
Hi Antonio you have inspired me to dress confident and look goo I was wondering when it is appropriate to wear a pin on your collar. I would also like to thank you for your service.-Jake
First of all, great video as always. I am surprised you are not a household name yet. On this matter, I believe an undershirt showing is acceptable, and can sometimes help bring coordination to the ensemble (think of an accessory such as a belt, ring or decor on shoes) that matches nothing else. An undershirt of the same color can make you seem more composed. The one area where there is no compromise is when a jacket is worn. Then you have too many layers for someone to focus on.
I've actually found that compression shirts also work great as undershirts as they're made to keep you cool and dry. Some may find them uncomfortable but I'm used to them and when you sweat it actually cools you down
Thanks for the video! I'm tall and slim with bountiful chest hair, and currently have a job with an issued polo as the uniform. In order to get anywhere near a proper length, I wear an XL polo, which leaves waaay too much room around the neck (undershirt is clearly visible even if top button is buttoned). Needless to say, I always wear a crew neck undershirt. Often, I'll wear a darker color, as I find this looks better than a plain white.
Although I wouldn't go to the supermarket in an undershirt because it is underwear, I ironically do enjoy the undershirt's contrast, whether white or black, to whatever button down shirt I might have on when it is being worn underneath something. I don't wear undershirts with a polo because that's usually way too hot and a polo is never buttoned to the top anyway. The best undershirts have at least 5% elastin in them, they gently fit the form and also feel like they're laced with helium, they float on your body. H&M has some with a thin border for a bit of style.
I feel that comfortable tops in the winter are low v neck sweaters or super v which I find comfortable and attractive along with super v under shirts. With no chest hair I keep that under shirt out of sight with the low cut sweater. I sometimes feel some people are looking at my bear chest. In the summer mostly wear low tank tops or in certain other times it no SHIRT at all.
A white crew neck T-shirt is as much as part of my uniform as my badge or utility belt. It is a required part of my uniform in fact ... V-necks are prohibited. Any cop will tell you that they must wear a T-shirt to help conceal nipples and chest hair. When not in uniform or wearing a suit but in casual leisure clothes I prefer no undershirt at all.
I think police officers and military guys should wear a white undershirt. They look really handsome when they do. But lately I've seen them switch to black undershirts which I don't like.
@Myobokuuzan I'd change the undershirt every day, unless you're doing very light work indeed -- it's right up against the body, so it gets all the sweat and smell that it's protecting your top layers from.
I usually wear a v-neck under my dress shirts at work but if i do wear a crew neck it's always black and I make sure the collar lays flat. I wouldn't wear a white crew neck under a dress shirt. It just looks kind of cheap.
I've tried v-neck undershirts, but as a larger man I have to buy larger undershirts, and then the V portion just tends to be too big and uncomfortable. But the contrast does bother me, so I've added different colored under shirts to my wardrobe to match various dress shirts I wear. That way the contrast isn't as stark.
If you wear an undershirt and wash it after every wear, how often will I need to wash a proper shirt and how should it be washed? Thanks Really enjoying you videos!
Mr T Great hearing from you. These articles should help: www.realmenrealstyle.com/tips-wash-clean-mens-dress-shirts/ and www.realmenrealstyle.com/clean-expensive-clothing/
@mkahn91 Yeah, a deliberately contrasting undershirt like that is definitely different from a little white collar poking out where it's not supposed to be. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
If I had to choose between yellow sweat stains on a nice shirt or an undershirt showing I'd go with latter any time of the day. I have high quality shirts that after 10+ years still look great (can't remember when I bought them) because I've taken care of them.
Well - I think my opinion was pretty clear in the vid but I am going to be in the no camp unless you're using it hide a distraction. So that's my vote!
Unless there is a specific exception, I also think an undershirt counts as underwear as is the equivalent of showing your boxers. The one time I do show my undershirt is when I wear a v-neck/quarter-zip sweater with no collared shirt underneath. Sweaters look better layered in my opinion, and layerlessness looks worse than the undershirt does (especially if you know how to use non-white undershirts that coordinate with your sweater, but that's relatively advanced, and white is always safe)
I am also in the camp of just wearing V necks as an undershirt. Although, you brought up some good points for some gentlemen to wear more of a crew cut undershirt. But admittedly, I don't mind if another gentleman shows the little bit of undershirt with an undone top button. It is low on that totem pole after all. I'd also like to add the term "wife beater" I feel like was a term people used in the 90's. I'd more frequently use the term "tank" rather than an offensive "wife beater" terminology. Being we are conversing about being gentlemen, I find it more appropriate.
My undershirt always shows because I usually wear my dress shirts unbuttoned , I find it gives me a rebellious look and lets my gold chain exposed , I also feel like it lets more air in during summer time . What is your opinion about that ?

Antonio, First, I have really enjoyed a few of your videos and wanted to thank you. Second, I am really struggling with finding shoes to wear other than running shoes. The setting: a casual night out with friends at a bar/restaurant where jeans are appropriate. Could you please discuss different shoe options (color, hue, style, texture) to be worn with jeans? Also, could you touch on what shirts I could wear with these styles? (I was thinking of jeans, a polo, brown shoes, and a brown belt)
If I have a clean v-neck shirt on hand and I know at some point my collar will be undone, I'll wear a v-neck. Otherwise, I'll stick with the crew neck. Although that might change once the need to buy more undershirts arises.
If you have an expensive white crew neck t-shirt like Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren (polyester/silk material) under an expensive white dress shirt then it is ok. If the undershirt shirt is cheap like Fruit of the Loom or Hanes and 100% cotton then it down grades your style!!! You should do a video on expensive undershirts and t-shirts and how they can add style. By the way, once again you did a great job with this video.

Interesting. Ive always wondered about this. What about when you are wearing a necktie should you wear a v neck or a full t-shirt. For me i would always be trying to fish the shirt up.
what color shirt should i wear under a white dress shirt. if i wear one you can see were the undershirt sleeves end and if i don't wear one you can tell, my skin is Italian shaded
Am interested to see more of your opinion on this subject, as I wear black EVERYTHING I'd like to hear your POV for a showing black undershirt. All the V-necks I have hence tried still show, and I refuse to look like a girl, and I also have chest hair. Advice?
@jabadroid20 A dress shirt worn with a necktie will always have the collar button done, which should cover up every style of shirt. At this point it's largely a matter of personal comfort, though I'd recommend the V-neck so that taking the tie off is an option. Thanks for asking!
@MrTalktothebear It may just be a matter of finding a brand with the neck where you want it. And as long as you're keeping the necktie on crew-necks should work just fine!
@racermaniak Appreciate the feedback - my wife wanted to try this again. We'll be doing quite a few more like this and then put out a vote to see what wins!
Mr. Centeno, what would you say to wearing with an open collar, such as those mandarin popovers you see these days? You have to have an undershirt in order to not be an Abercrombie & Fitch model, and lots of that undershirt will show. For me, my only color is black (yes, every day, every article of clothing) so it turns out to look rather stylish instead of underwear-ish. What do you think?
@RealMenRealStyle Well, in this video you talk about undershirt showing/exposed at the top when the top button is undone. I am very interested in your opinion on undershirt lines showing through the shirt fabric in a business casual setting (wheter is sleevless/tank-top or short sleeved tee/undershirt). I mostly read that it's a no-no as well as that a see-through fabric is a hallmark of bad quality. What do you think?
Great video- nice looking guy, intelligent, good speaking voice, interesting. But the host should add some variety with pictures, graphics of examples, ect! The host should have shown his v-neck t-shirt in a pic.
I have a scar/keloid on my chest which I don't like and bothers sometimes with button shirts so I wear the crew neck. However, I'm going to try to v-necks because I like the look of no undershirt like how you wear your shirts unbuttoned.
I don't think it looks good, because in my opinion t-shirts are casual wear and it contrasts dress shirts. If you are going to wear an undershirt, go with a v-neck or a-shirt.
I always wear an undershirt, but never let it show while wearing a dress shirt. If I'm wearing a casual shirt, however, I don't mind. And in summer time, I might be wearing a short sleeved casual shirt unbuttoned all the way down (on particularly hot days - I usually have to go on holiday for that), showing the whole front of the undershirt. I find this preferable to showing bare skin, which you should only do if you have the body for it (and I can't really say that I have), and strikes me as just on the wrong side of the tacky-border, even if you do have the body for it. An undershirt at least maintains a modicum of decency, and it is not as private an undergarment as underpants. But in a corporate, semi-formal or formal setting, I wouldn't let it show.
This channel is called "Real Men Real Style", but I don't feel like a real man when I watch a RUclips video that tells me to grab a free e-book on men's style and fashion, to like the video, and that teaches me how to wear an undershirt.
Is it ok for a under shirt to show at the bottom of the dress shirt meaning the under shirt is longer than the dress shirt even if its tucked in for tall people?
Great Videos man.. Very creative idea (RMRS) and your videos are very clear and helpful. I don't subscribe or anything but I gave It my THUMBS UP! Keep it up!
Sorry again I disagree I do not like the feel of v neck. And a shirt showing is no big deal. Out here in the hot areas a full cover t shirt looks good and if you open 2 nd buttons. It is always better
The other night during a UFC event, Brock Lesnar was commentating and he had a nice blazer with a light blue dress shirt underneath with a bright white crew neck undershirt underneath that. I thought it looked terrible.
I wear thermal crew neck shirts under my business casual clothing in the colder months. The thermal shirts are gray and creme colored and do show when the top button is undone. Would you consider this acceptable? I do wear v-neck undershirts in the warmer months though.
Too often the white undershirts are dingy, or bacon rippled, and if you're showing an undershirt you're avertising that you know you need to wear one because you're sweaty and/or hairy. Don't wear one if you can get away with it. Hide it if you can't.
I've been wearing Hanes undershirts for a long time. One thing that I'm starting to notice is the collar and its wear. The seam to the collar bulges out. Do you have any suggestions for a clean collar?
If a lot of people in the corporate world wear undershirts and show them; do they have a special reason to that? Also, does that mean that if I let my undershirt show, I would look like a corporate? (more of a joke, but still want to know the answer)
I imagine you should wear a V neck more dressed up but what about a casual look with a button up and some jeans? I would rather wear a v neck to but I'm a skinny guy and I feel it makes it makes me look skinnier by being able to see my skinny neck, lol
RealityHurts923 Casual shirts can oftentimes be thicker so it's best not to wear anything underneath or you might get too hot. Unless it's a thinner material, then do what feels right but don't let that undershirt show.
If you wear an athletic undershirt, you need not worry about it showing when you unbutton your dress shirt. An a-shirt is more of a grown-up look. A crew neck undershirt makes you look like a frat guy trying to be an adult.
I fall into the chesthair camp... Austin Powers style... so crews it is for me. But, white shirt=white undershit. Blue shirt=gray undershirt... I try to tone down the contrast.
I know another person who loves to be dress up, but his undershirt is always showing, and it completely ruins his look. I personally don't wear undershirts very often, because I find it uncomfortable and hot.
I wear an undershirt and often leave the top button undone where it shows for three main reasons. One being I don't have a lot of chest hair, but enough that some hairs do show. what undershirt would you recommend during the heat? in order for it to absorb the sweat in the back so in wont show in the main shirt?
I don't think it looks good, because in my opinion t-shirts are casual wear and it contrasts dress shirts. If you are going to wear an undershirt, go with a v-neck or a-shirt.
What company did you talk about? Rib tee?
Thanks for the advise. I'll give it a try

What about undershirt under the hoodie or sweater? Should it show?
DNikola91 no
The other night during a UFC event, Brock Lesnar was commentating and he had a nice blazer with a light blue dress shirt underneath with a bright white crew neck undershirt underneath that. I thought it looked terrible.
Completely agree
Hey buddy! I'm new here and I'm definitely posting your videos to my facebook. Do you think undershirt colors matter?
Dude you one handsome man. Respect
I wear thermal crew neck shirts under my business casual clothing in the colder months. The thermal shirts are gray and creme colored and do show when the top button is undone. Would you consider this acceptable? I do wear v-neck undershirts in the warmer months though.
jzeeder I actually have a review of thermal underwear - check this out: www.realmenrealstyle.com/mens-thermal-underwear/
i never wear undershirts they make me sweat a lot more
buddy... u are awesome.. thanks!!!
Do you have any suggestions for a clean collar?

i wear my undershirt over my dress shirt, that means i dont get my dress shirt dirty.aint i a genius!
@dt0957 Keep watching - see if you catch me taking your advice:)
@AnomalyTea Agreed - great comment!
@bobdava3226 Your basic "A-neck" (scooped) T-shirt or sleeveless white undershirt should work all right for you, I think.
@therealgarygnu I like that you're paying attention to this - you are on top of it sir!
+RealityHurts923 You can wear a button up shirt with a jacket and jeans.
What about under an oxford
I prefer to not show an undershirt...however I have have a large scar from surgery. I hate to show my shirt. But I hate to show my scar. Torn.
The scar makes a story. The undershirt makes a goof
@jksolem RibbedTee - great company!
yes it can because you can dress however you want
@Jasonsreality Thank you sir!
I'd suggest going back to your black background. It's easier on the eyes :) White is a bit to bright.
@RealMenRealStyle Yeah. Exposed undershirts + TV = Fail.
I'm wearing wife beaters all the time, 24/7
Ifeel we been hanging out all day talking clothes
No!
Just a fashion trend. Showing shirt is more macho. Trend is towards less macho now.
I fall into the chesthair camp... Austin Powers style... so crews it is for me. But, white shirt=white undershit. Blue shirt=gray undershirt... I try to tone down the contrast.
What about a wife beater shirt under a v neck with a dress shirt is this excepted and what is the purpose of the wife beater shirt?
LOL! I was thinking that too... XD
I know another person who loves to be dress up, but his undershirt is always showing, and it completely ruins his look. I personally don't wear undershirts very often, because I find it uncomfortable and hot.
+Peter Kiss It has some advantages though
+Peter Kiss I used to wear under shirts like this, because of chest hair, now I just Tom Selleck it.
+Real Men Real Style *proceeds not to mention any*
My beard hides my chest hair
Should children wear white tanktops as undershirts to school
