  • This song was written (and performed live with Ambrosia) many years back when "The Jerry Springer Show" first aired. Joe's compositional inspiration jumped forth after watching a particularly disturbing episode dealing with abnormally enhanced female mammary glands. AKA "Freaks". Again, please note, this funny but eerily prophetic song was written years ago, long before others had even a clue.
Sunken City was Joe's solo project during the summer of 1998. Joe and I were sitting in Tommy's (local dive bar) which is down the street from the venue, Sacred Grounds Coffee Shop & Gallery and Liz who booked Sacred asked Joe if he wanted to play there. We laughed and asked how much they could pay since the place could only legally hold 100 people. She told us we got the door like everyone else. We did some creative math and told her he'd get another guitar player and do and unplugged a duo. I told Joe I'd handle most of the details (aka produce) and back it (financially). To make a very long story short the 2 piece acoustic set ended up becoming a full on 7 piece prog unit that played more than just the coffee shop. The show at Sacred was a truly magical night. The band having just met each other a few days before played with only 2 rehearsals and totally surprised themselves later that night when we all went back to my studio to watch back the video. Even I was surprised as to how damn good they were. Without the tape we really would have thought it was just another gig. Unfortunately it didn't last although we had high hopes. The fact is a 7 piece prog group was just not financially sustainable even back in 1998. There were a lot more places to play then there is now but that's only about half of what there had been during the 70's. Anyway it really was a gas as they say.
Look for more Sunken City videos soon. I have 2 days of rehearsals I shot with many incredible musical moments.
Joe named his band after Sunken City. A neighborhood in San Pedro, California, where after a couple earthquakes, a street full of new homes fell into the sea. Named Paseo Del Mar, it's a popular place for people to have bonfires, drink beer and jump to their deaths. Not really but that's the government's excuse for fencing the public out. Of course every day and night hundreds go through or around or over the fences to visit what's left of the actual asphalt street, and a little bit random storm drain plumbing so they can make their own art. I'm talking about spray painting, or tagging, graffiti as art. Many, So many people, whole families, friend groups carrying bags of cans of every color and type of spray paint you can think of arrive in nice new cars, go down the cliff around the fences to spray the shit out of what's still there. Google it.
