one of the best things i like of 40k is the difference between the 30k and the 40k... mankind was far more powerful and technologically advanced but even after the heresy and all the destruction and loss that it brought the imperium still stands after 10000 years of never ending war against what seems like unstoppable odds; technology get always worst as it downgrade to almost stick and stone and a corrupted self-serving burocracy try to keep it afloot... despite this mankind endures in a never ending war of survival
That... might just sum us up _now_ . Just our technology is still advancing. Petty bureaucracy, corruption, arrogance, ignorance, the striping of humanity as we fight over things that won't matter in the long run. Really makes you think... then again, science fiction / fantasy isnt about the action, *it's the lesson it hints toward* .

Perhaps the thing that I respect about the Imperium of Man is the will to persist. No matter the cost, no matter the foe, no matter how far they fell, they will stand up and survive with defiance spat between bloody teeth.

The Imperium IS a shit hole where brutality is used by a totalitarian mega state to keep the status quo. Ever wonder why so man humans take up worship of chaos? You should do Living the Dream (by Five Finger Death Punch) Horus Heresy Tribute next, I feel like it works so well with the superhuman nature of the Primarchs and the Astartes but they're more human than most people know
