Buona vita a tutti ciao.
Beautiful ship and beautiful video. The ship silouhetted in the title is the A. Doria, a bit smaller and with the funnel exactly amidships, while the Da Vinci's was further aft, as can be seen in the footage at 01.04.
Yes, though I personally love the Doria. The Colombo seemed so much more conservative than the Doria, I know the Italian Line wanted each ship to have its own identity - but always wonder if it was a budget constraint - so much money spent on the Doria they had to economize a little on the Colombo. The Leonardo was so cool in 1960, reflecting the evolution of mid century modern - the blond wood had now been replaced with a honey color, the the artwork in some cases seemed like a preview of pop or even op art, the printed fabrics were really gorgeous, like the tourist class dining room’s drapes that looked like abstract red and black flowers on a white background - really cool!
I'm indebted to OlympicWS for these great videos. - As a ship lover since my early teens I despair of the junk we have today compared to the elegant and beautiful liners of the past. I'm of an age to just remember the last of the great trans-atlantic liners, only the current QM2 comes anywhere close and she is a pale shadow of the original Queens.
I have framed scale deck plans in my home from when I worked for Costa Cruises, which chartered her for Bahamas cruises in the late 70's. What a sad end to such a beautiful vessel.
When I was a little kid back in the late 70s I went with my parents to see off my grandparents, they were going to the Bahamas and it was docked in the Port of Miami. I was only on it for one day but it left me with a special memory that I'll never forget. Does anyone have any information on how the ship burned down. I've looked it up but there's limited information on it some stating foul play or electrical problems. If anyone knows more it would be greatly appreciated. Rip Leonardo Da Vinci you will be sorely missed 🙏
Mah! Vallo a capire!!!! Ah!
That was the first class lounge of the Cristoforo Colombo, not the Leonardo. The latter was the epitome of 1960 design, the green corridors with the blue cabin doors, the tapestried ballroom with cube-shaped chairs, the fishbone Murano glass light fixture in the library, the hammered silver wall panel of DaVinci in the foyer, the futuristic cabin class bar, the printed chintz curtains in the cabins, the glass stairway railings, the Pirelli rubber floors in the cabins, the mod mural in the tourist class pool bar - Italian modern design that bridged the 1950s with the 1960s.
SS Leonardo da Vinci If she didn’t burn down Passenger ship 1960-1976 1977-1978 1984-1995 2002-2009 Laid up 1976-1977 1978-1984 1995-2002 2009-2012(scrapped)
The ships that were owned by French line had to be laid up because French line went out of service so some ships were sold and some got scraped the most living one was the ss norway but she sadly died In 2008 so the French line had dissapered the only some parts left from norway the parts went to save the ss untitled states so the parts can fix her so ss United States is the only ship coming with ss norway
Painting the hull of Leonardo da Vinci and Cristoforo Colombo with white color was a bad idea. Only black was giving its unforgettable impression of those ships beauty and class.
No, Andrea Doria and Cristoforo Colombo were exact sisters. While Leonardo was built as an Andrea replacement but slightly larger. Check and compare on Wikipedia the design specifics of them.

She was the most beautiful of the Italian Line's post-WWII ships. She was the Andrea Doria's design, pushed to a higher level.

Did anyone notice the fleeting glimpse of the Queen Mary next to it?
Either QM or QE at 0:37? Yes, could be... They used to meet quite often at New York harbor.... Look at 1:21...
Actually no I didn't because it was the Queen Elizabeth - lol
