Sad I had to miss this live. I donated to GDQ for the first time this year and put my incentive towards the screen size in this. Lost my grandpa to cancer in July 2023 and while I don't have a lot of money, I at least wanted to chip in a little if it means it will help somebody else avoid having to go through what my grandpa and my family went through.
I'll never forget seeing the bullshots of this game in Next Generation magazine back in the day. It looks SO amazing, my friends and I used to day dream about flying around the city and beating people up and shooting them with eye lasers.... Then it came out.
My very first home PC wasn't powerful enough to run Diablo (the first one) at native resolution. If you entered game and pressed ctrl+z it would zoom in just enough around your character to play but wouldn't render anything else. At 4x I think that made the total viewing area 160x120 or 2.5 times the size of the character model.
I remember first seeing this game via ProtonJon several years ago. Specifically remember him interviewing one of the key devs and hearing just how cool and ambitious their plan for this game was….. and how brutally that got blown apart in the process of working with WB
"Studio meddling" is something usually associated with the movie industry, but Superman 64 proves that executives shouldn't be allowed to make decisions in any field.
Well, if you are going to play Superman 64, this is the way: On a tiny screen so you see it as little as possible and a speedrun so you play it as little as possible.
Superman 64 is a relic of an age where bad games meant something. Releasing a game for home consoles was expensive enough that true garbage like this was appreciated. Truly awful games became cultural touchstones. Now, with AI and cheap asset flips and the rise of digital distribution, the garbage isn’t even remarkable anymore. It’s just the background radiation of the gaming world.
So I love gdq but haven’t really kept up with it for a few years. I’m scrolling to see what games were done and I instantly laugh when I see Superman 64 knowing this must be some meme. I say to myself “isn’t that supposedly the worst game ever made lol?” And the runner says that almost instantly 😂
People poop on superman 64 all the time but I can't think of an earlier use of flight rings, which are used in maaaaaany modern day flight races. Even irl drone racing uses rings sometimes.
I just love that the run starts with "if you're having problems with the screen right now, YOU DONATED FOR THIS!!!!" Let's be honest it was worth it .
Donated for less lag so we the runner has to suffer less. :)
I can't believe screen sizing was an option for THIS game.
I played this ages ago and didn't know it was a thing.
Watching the 20% screen run on my phone through youtubes miniplayer
based
1 pixel video
OP "no... we can go smaller!!"
The less Superman 64 the better.

"Satan where did the screen size end up" that that just fit to perfectly
The beginning of the best block: Awful Block.
Darkseid specifically being the villain that you have to arrest is very funny to me
"Solve my Speedrun, Superman!"

It never occurred to me that the zoom was to make the game run faster! (I started playing it when D2 came out, so performance wasn't a problem.)

“Then there’s no time to waste!”
Why did they add a 20% screen size option? 👁️ 🔎
It is a business decision. Doom had it. And Doom is cool. Therefore, in business logic, Superman 64 is also cool.
I’m a little disappointed easy mode doesn’t have the rings, but still a very fun run
It is disappointing, but the run would literally be twice as long. Some of the ring stages are 5-6 minutes each.
Way to go Brad! So proud!
This might have kicked off the best awful block ever.
I’ve always to see SuperDan 64: Dan of Steel done quick!

Note to self, if ever going to GDQ live, bring binoculars.
I’m going to need glasses after seeing this run.
Wild! Should have zoomed in the game screen so it filled the main window!
shrinking the screen size makes the speedrun faster because Clark Kent wears glasses, but Superman doesn't 🧠
what was said at 2:37 and 7:32?
This has to be the biggest amount of subpixels I've ever not seen
Someone PLEASE pixel-count the 20% game window. I need to know the exact screen resolution it's rendering at

Kryptonians living in Kandor be like
I genuinely don't understand the point of the screen size option. The HUD is literally off the screen at smaller sizes!
I wonder if having a 5090 would make this look better haha
Amazing
I love videogames
That's certainly a small screen. 😂
Here pour les morceaux de bras

Lol small screen was a scam
What.
Screen bs ruined this

Pilotwings had flight rings and came out almost 10 years earlier
