The most fascinating aspect of this podcast is listening to Avery, someone who has presumably made a career of understanding American society and culture, spend 20 minutes discovering something that over half the country already understood. I left the country a decade ago because the rental market was insane for the working class (which we all basically are now), particularly as a parent. I moved to Mexico, and with an average middle class Mexican (not USD) salary here, my son went to a private Montessori school, we had a three bedroom home in a nice neighborhood, a bunch of dogs, and I could afford afterschool activies for him such as karate. In the US, I could have never done any of that with a comperable salary. I am now married to a local and my sister-in-law and her husband are service workers in a small local cafe. They have enough money for a house and two kids without struggling. Now, if a decade ago the rental market was brutal in the US, imagine it post-pandemic, with 8,000,000+ low income migrants seeking housing! It must be horrific for America's working poor to get by right now. And here's something I know, a grim truth no one in the media (not even Fox) is talking about. The migrants ARE NOT POOR! The vast majority are middle class, office working Venezuelans who were guillible enough to get duped by polleros/coyotes to pay huge fees for guidance through the jungle, through Mexico, and ultimately to the US border, where they're given a script by the cartels so they can lie to claim asylum. I'd wager 95% of the people who've poured into the US and Mexico (because a TON stay here and destabilize Mexico) are economic migrants taking advantage of the system. Now if that all sounds harsh, here's a horrific detail for the gentler, compassion-oriented folks who think we should let them come regardless. The abuse of women on these routes is prolific. If a family doesn't have money to pay the fees, they panhandle, steal, or sell young women and children. They may also be obligated to traffic substances across the border. It is a travesty that this isn't reported on. It is a human rights crisis and it is utterly destabilizing to Latin American countries and Haiti. And it's SO unnecessary, because in most cases, these people will have better lives in their native countries, either because there's nothing inherently wrong with their countries apart from being slightly poorer, or because they will work to improve their own government, rather than abandoning it and leaving it bereft of young, working age adults.
Thank you for saying all of this! I think neither side is telling the truth about immigration either it’s fear mongering calling them all criminals or it’s racist to even be concerned about it. The federal reserve even said that without mass immigration the unemployment rate would have been steadily rising, meaning the only true growth in employment has been for foreign born workers.
Tbh I don't think the Democrats wanted to listen to the working class, and I would not be surprised if they take donors money and run AOC for president in 2028 and lose again.
You're absolutely right. They're so smug and condescending, and they know less than almost everyone in America. The media is so stupid. Insufferable!~!

Excellent points, and I completely agree. As a resident of NYC and a Democrat voter, I find it frustrating when the party insists that "there is no immigration issue" or "there is no crime problem" when I see the challenges with my own eyes every day. Walking around NYC, it’s hard to ignore the visible issues with crime and the significant presence of immigrants in prominent parts of the city. While I don’t necessarily agree with Trump’s approach, I understand why people might be drawn to him. It often feels like the Left and Democrats are promoting a narrative that dismisses or downplays the reality that many of us experience firsthand. For me, that reality includes a noticeable increase in homelessness, drug use, crime, and challenges related to immigration, all very apparent in NYC.
The generational shift here is wild. Back in the 80s and 90s you could have a gunfight in Times Square and it wouldn’t even make the news, you couldn’t get the cops to come out for anything less than full-fledged mayhem in the street. Your mileage may vary but crime has fallen off kinda dramatically from when it started to peak at the end of Trumps last term and certainly from the real peak around 1990. That being said the last person you shoulda have speak at the popularity contest is Kathy Hochul.
That far left "journalist" found a coherent and apparently honest Democrat and her bias wouldn't let her understand the realities on the ground this man was conveying. It couldn't possibly be that her way of thinking is exactly the problem.
Excellent guest (and I am ultra MAGA). The host just could not fathom a world in which Dem voters are made unhappy by limitless immigration of poor people into the USA. Another example of just how much Martha's Vinyard is out of touch with the struggles of the working class.
If they would put criminals in jail instead of releasing them on probation, crime would decrease. Law abiding citizens are not the problem and are not surrendering any constitutional rights. If you want to change the US Constitution, call a constitutional convention of 2/3 of the States, otherwise leave us alone.
Incredible conversation with rep. Torres. I am a working class poc from the the NY suburbs, and this is one of the few times that the mainstream media has given airtime to a Democratic representative who speaks for me. And directly to me. This is one of the few times I have ever felt heard or seen by the Democratic party in the last ten years in a way that gives me faith that the party I’ve supported since I came of voting age isn’t down the shitter completely. It’s not that I didn’t know these civil servants existed, but they almost never get airtime on MSM. They never get to be a real voice in the left’s conversation. This is not a man devoid of values or private moral outrage, but what he spent at least some parts of this conversation trying to say to the journalist was that we cannot govern, campaign or engage with the people of this country solely by indulging in our moral outrage. Practicality, moderation and facing reality is important when it comes to language and policy. Something that this journalist seemed strangely seemed unable to understand.
No worries, I'm sure the billionaire convicted rapist who tried to overthrow the government and presided over 1.3 million Covid Deaths will keep his eye out for helping "the working class"....lol
Hanna, you’re great but I can tell your disappointment about the election is clouding your view and willingness to accept or fully comprehend what folks like this guy are saying. Movements like defund the police and Black Lives Matter do little to hold those communities accountable to their actions in the first place, and working class neighborhoods have been terrorized since that movement and the pandemic decimated policing. I don’t agree all police are great and their training needs a revamp but it’s ridiculous to accept that social workers would be better equipped to go out and deal with some of these scenarios. It’s great that some of us folks have our education and whatnot but that turns into privilege that usually shields us from the realities of the neighborhoods and communities we don’t want to live in either. And when prices are crazy, ppl become more disillusioned that dems are looking out for them just like they are the criminals.
Excellent points and agree 100% -- as someone who lives in NYC and voted Dem, my biggest problem is being gaslit by the party into saying "there is no immigration problem, there is no crime problem" -- when I see it, with my eyes, every day walking the streets of NYC. Immigrants everywhere, committing crimes. In major popular parts of NYC.
Yeah, I don’t know what it’s going to take to convince people like this host that this was not a problem about messaging, that you can’t just switch out one image or phrase for another and get a different result at this time. As the guest says, there was and is an actual emergency going on, several of them, and some Democrats continue to tell us that they aren’t happening. I really don’t understand it, it’s VERY superficial, and it has to be more than just an ivory tower kind of problem. They can’t claim they haven’t seen these things for themselves or that they weren’t told because we’re telling them every day and they just keep telling us it’s not true. It’s really freaking scary and honestly it’s only gotten scarier since the election ended and watching people like this host struggle to understand such basic truisms.
Hearing a Democrat say they should be constrained by public opinion is shocking in a good way. And shocking in that they really haven’t been in a long time.
