My brother experienced the same thing in Ukraine. When there was a misunderstanding about something he asked about waste collection (and the personnel in the hotel thought he wanted his wastebin emptied out which they immediately did) he gave the woman who did that a small fee/tip while explaining she misunderstood him and didn't have to do that.
She looked at the coins and then made a preying gesture and next to the little English she had spoken before she was now talking to him in Ukranian, and the other maid with her who was able to translate into English explained to him that she was thanking him for having just provided the money for the metro ride home...
My brother still remembers how hard-hitting that experience was.

I only have massages when I travel in Asia. They are 8x more expensive in my home country.
You should def try it! I went so long without getting a massage because I thought it was a waste of money. But you can get a quick one for $20 or $30 anywhere in the US, and it's totally worth it. Treat yourself!
