- How to Plant a Camellia - First Plant at New House - In this video I plant an October Magic® Ruby™ Camellia in the garden at the new house. It is a red fall flowering Camellia from the Southern Living Plant Collection. I show how I go about planting it in my clay soil. I am using all compost at the new place.

The trenching shovel advice is some of the best advice I've ever gotten.
Just brought 10 October magic -Camellias from Southern Living and planted just like you showed in the video.
Thank you so much
Thanks Jim! I successfully planted a Lemon Glow Camellia this morning! 😊
That is a beautiful Camellia! I need a few more in my yard. As to your favorite shovel, I have a shovel my mother gave me about 45 yrs ago and this year the handle broke (I cried). I couldn't throw it away, and someone suggested I could replace the handle, so I will be doing that this winter. I understand that sentiment!
I have had a few tools over the years that I hated losing or breaking.
Real tears
Yay! The ceremonial first planting. Woo hoo! And a camellia is one of my favorites. 👏🏻👏🏻
Congrats Jim!!! The first planting!!! I look forward to watching your yard change!
Enjoyed your thorough mindset on planting this shrub (?). Not only do u explain the intention of the space but also how to care for it and talk about soil analysis and amendment. Great video! Can NOT wait to see this flourish.
Thank you very much for the feedback.
How exciting your first planting! Very pretty shrub.😊
Great instructions.
Can’t wait to see how you landscape your new place. I’m in Birmingham, Alabama and tonight it’s supposed to go down to 24 degrees. I think it was in the 70’s when it got this cold so soon. I usually have the air conditioner going on Thanksgiving.
I am going to get me one of those shovels. The plant is beautiful. I have a pink one. Can't wait till you start your vegetable garden.
Always happy with a new start
Clean slate!
Looks good Jim,
Looking forward to the Transformation 😀👍
Hi, congrats! Think you could also discuss your thoughts about how far decided to set the plant from the building. I've seen some crazy close installations! It would be great to hear your thinking.
Beautiful hope My bloom in October🌹
Hey thanks!
That’s awesome. Thanks for the great info. I’m new to Camilla, and just got the ruby. That music cracked me up. 5 seconds of sped up Jim. Good stuff! 👍👍
How’s It Growing? Once I seen what he was planting, I thought of you! Lol.
Nice job, Jim! 👍
Jim?
@@MrEunderwood wait i commented that
Beautiful shrub🌺
Very much like to watch your videos. I am in the same zone (7b) lots of great info!
Did you have to prepare the ph ahead of time?
Hello Jim,
I am obsess with Camelias. Sadly I live in a zone 6. Any Camelias you know that are extremely hardy?
Thanks so much
Love your southern accent btw 😎
The Ackerman hybrids are the ones to use.
jerome gagnon I live in zone 6b so I wondering if one would survive in my yard.
Jim thanks for the video. I really like camellias. The red color is beautiful. It’s hard for me to dig in my yard due to heavy clay soil and tree roots everywhere in VA. Your shed is looking good. I need to replace mine. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing the ceremonial first planting. I hope Holly likes her new yard?
Thank you for sharing... What month is the best time to plant...? I live in OKLAHOMA state...
Jim, I just found you a few weeks ago and really enjoying your videos. I'm in south wake county and have clay too. We're planning on planting some japanese maples, a ginkgo, and some camellias this fall
I do have a question - in other videos you say to use pine bark conditioner in clay, but you're using compost in this video. It looks easier on a large project. Does it matter? thanks
Beautiful shrub/tree! Question for you. I’m in zone 8a. If you had to pick one camellia that gets very large and is faster grower of the camellias which one would you pick ? I want to plant 6-8 as a screen but worry it will be 10 years before they get 10 feet tall. Thanks for your wisdom ! Do you accept tips !? :)
Hi there my zone is 8b. I am thinking to use camellia sasanqua as privacy hedge for one side of my property and ligustrum for other sides. I am planning to keep them 7-8 feet tall eventually. My landscaper doesn’t like the idea that he told me ligustrum will be a lot fast growing than camellia. How many years will the camellia hedge reach 7 feet tall?
I wondered what happened to the plants that you started put in at the garden center, did you dig all of them? I’m excited to see how your yard looks in a year. 😃
I did take them all with me. Used a few on landscape jobs and I still have several.
I just planted a white one.
Would that trench shovel work for edging beds? I find the half moon edgers to be terrible and usually use a shovel, but then my shovel doesn't create a straight edge. Thanks.
Yes, it's all I use. It isn't 100 percent perfect, but it's way faster
👋😃
Your not painting the shed first??? Your probably doing that yourself and don't have to worry about a contractor? And, can't wait to see the colors you pick for it.
I have the paint. I'm just waiting for it to warm back up this weekend. I actually put the paint on Instagram yesterday
