I love your method here its LITERALY gain trust, then train same thing works with dogs, you first get trust if needed, then you train I use negative on my dog top, same way pressure and release I actually did it to stop her from pulling on her Haiti head harness....yeah needless to say a pop in response to slight pulling stops pulling after 5 times repeat multiple occasions and BAM no more pulling, also with dogs once older 6-9 months + deppending on the dog then you set em up to the bad behavior and do the negative and BAM the dog gets the hint do it multiple times with a few items and unlile a horse you dont gotta do it with every item but deffintly a few to get the command/behavior solid
A horse’s thought process differs from it’s reacting to stimuli. Range horses follow “flight or fight” in open spaces, but when confined to smaller spaces (just like a domesticated horse) they will display F I C A, fear-ignore-curiosity-acceptance. This is their “school” of learning how to think about a situation. I find this display of behavior profound in figuring out a horse’s strengths and weaknesses. Individual demeanor based on genetics and environmental exposure will influence the amount of time it takes to transition from one stage to the next. Equus is an active work of art in progress! Hats off to you for embarking on such a worthwhile cause and much needed help in managing the wild herds of America. The fact that she is dependent on you as her sole food source recreates the opportunity for bonding that happens between a foal and its mother, whether natural or adopted. The long trip and weight loss will be in your favor in this regard.
This is an AWESOME thing u do for animals that, otherwise, would be sent to the glue works. It's a rough road for these wild ones! Such an awful plight... On a lighter note... I like Ebony! Shorten to Ebby or Ebs. I think it works!
I personally love changing the method per horse! Great job with your horses! I think that counts as a pre-first touch! That way you can celebrate it twice! 😂 She seems pretty brave!
Thank you! Im trying my best to be adaptable. Mustangs are so much fun - they really do make you problem solve! Haha and I love the way you think! that's a good way to put it😂
With my first mustang - and second and third - I'd just go out and sit by or in the round pen with them to read a book. Just ignore the horse completely and move naturally, and invariably they got curious and comfortable with it. My first one also wouldn't take treats until she saw me eat them first, the latter two learned to eat them by watching the first. The first one never would eat carrots, though... my dog loves carrots, so she'd take them and give them to the dog. Instead, her favorites were bananas (with or without the peel), cinnamon gummy bears and old-fashioned peppermint 'puff' candies'. She insisted on trying everything else she saw me eat, too, but she never did like oranges no matter how many times she insisted on trying them. Personality really makes a difference with them. My first two were chosen because I liked their attitude and confidence, and both were hands-on within three days. The third... my father chose because she was pretty, and the BLM threw in for $25 to go with the second because they couldn't get anyone to adopt her. Hare-brained red-headed pain in the... well, suffice to say that the red dun took a few weeks, rather than three days, to be reliably hands-on. Fortunately, she was later placed with someone who was a perfect match for her, and they still adore each other. Sometimes, it's finding the right person for the horse. It's not a generic fit.
I love what you do! This is how I used to tame animals... food, outwaiting them and, when they allow it, touch. And yes, it counts. She can't be unaware of you, she was smelling you when she was pulling alfalfa out of your hand.
Weather you went to her or she went to you, first contact was made. And she absolutely knew it was you when she pushed on your arm. I doubt you’ll ever do two exactly the same, but you will find what works for you. Not sure it matters which road you take as long as you get to the destination.
Oh she's so lovely! It's wild how such a small movement like adjusting your neck spooked her.. Makes sense that she's from Nevada - drove through back when I was a kid and we saw a herd near the road, almost all we're super dark colors like her! Black or very dark bay. I think she's my new favorite of your mustangs 😄
I know, right! They are very on edge when the arrive. I so wish I didn't loose the footage of Sparrow in during this process :( She was pretty mild compared to Sparrow😅
Love this video. (New subscriber here.) Looking forward to your journey with "the black" (words from The Black Stallion). Love horses when they snort. Reminds me of the scripture at Job 39:19-21 (God questions the man Job): "Are you the one who gives the horse its strength? Do you clothe its neck with a rustling mane? Can you cause it to leap like a locust? Its majestic snorting is terrifying. It paws the ground in the valley and exults mightily; It charges into the battle." (the movie Secretariat quoted these Bible verses). She's beautiful. Best wishes on gentling your new mare. 🐎
Quick name suggestion! Sapphire? I named a horse sapphire that looked identical years ago and I thought she suited it very well. Can't wait for more updates!
Awww, this takes me back to when I got my mustang colt 42 years ago! I used pretty much the same method back then, even though we didn't have the internet to search back then so I was making it up as I went.
This beautiful filly has got a kind eye. I think as soon as you get a headcollar/ halter on her she's going to come on in leaps and bounds. She's doing really well for the 1st day. I think its better she's in the flight mode rather than the fight mode. She's going to make someone a really beautiful ride❤️
I love watching the gentling mustang videos . The thing I find sad is that they don't generally have the company of other horses. Even if there's a fence between them , I think they'd appreciate the company ! ❤️🌿🐎
You can’t always assume based on what you see on the screen. There are multiple mustangs here, but they get separated for training sessions. This was also her first day here, and she had traveled across the country, so I wanted to make sure she was protected and able to catch up on food and water before having to worry about herd dynamics
I guess well see. I favor a name that suggests the place where she came from. I would just call her "Goshute" or "Goshute Raven." Simply "Raven" is seems pretty good.
Black is Eswid in Arabic. She’s beautiful and I’m thankful she has survived such a long journey. I hate it that they have to be separated from their families and friends but I know that it’s next to impossible to keep them together. I wish you success and I will be praying for her forever home.
I found a mare once that had been allowed to run wild with Her Herd mates on a 500-acre horse ranch. She was 5 years old without any human contact when I purchased her. I use to sit under a tree reading a book in her pasture. I would also lure her with bearded oat hay and alfalfa. Her name was Misty Morning Magic, and she became one of my favorite horses. I find it's better to gentle a horse than to break its spirit. Magic for short. When I first saw her, she slowly trotted through low-lying ground fog. Slowly appearing like magic on that misty morning. My beautiful strawberry roan horse
What fun!! I'd love to have a Mustang. Did you know you are actually using positive reinforcement even though you may not know it? She gets alfalfa for approaching you. ☺️ I do like her brain!
wow i am INLOVE with her. i can’t wait to follow her as you work with her. i’d call her blackbird, keeps the simplicity of blackmare 😂, and bird since she’s a little “flighty”. goodluck with that gorgeous girl ❤.
of course that counts! she's such a little beauty. she may spook but she comes right back. for some reason my cat is fascinated with this horse video! 😸
What about moving around a little more during the initial waiting period? Like tap your hand on your leg, read stuff on your phone, shift positions, etc. Although the initial wait for her to approach you & eat might be slightly longer, she would already be conditioned to have a bit less fear of slight movements.
That part comes with time. I can say what we have done and do is grab a folding chair and if the horse is feral (run in from a large ranch at 2 to 4 yrs) or a mustang we grab a book and sit there and read for hours and hours and hours so the horse gets as adjusted to our presence and movements as you see this mare already is to the chickens who walk through her pen. We don't expect touch, but they eventually do become curious and you simply ignore them. They may smell you or your hair or even nibble you a bit, but you want them to be comfortable with a human being around all of the time flipping pages, changing legs, shifting weight, maybe even stretch, etc.. In this case she really wanted touch over desensitization like I explained with grab a long book and go sit out there as long as you can. Just different goals in the short term. Need both in the long term.
I can assure you, as I do this type of training as well, she was fully aware of your hand the first time. (She is aware of everything in the pen by now and outside the pen that she can hear, see, and smell too). Your smell was there and on the other hay put out. On the water that was put out. Horses read intentions and body language so she knew you weren't meaning to catch her or anything and your reaction to not chase her when she runs means you are not a predator. Her curiosity is very high so never punish it and let her smell all of the ropes, halters, and gear and she will be very accepting of it. Curious horses are good!!! Mustangs are more aware than any regular horse bred in a barn because their awareness mattered for their safety. You change the method per horse based on what the horse is telling you. . ."fearful", "dominant", "submissive", "follower", "leader", etc. and this let's you know who you are dealing with so you can accommodate better as a partner.
Because of her coloration, you could always call her Evening Star or Night Star. Star for the mark on her forehead evening or night because of the rest of her coloration. Star for short. Because I see a star in her, and she is going to shine brightly. She's a smart mare

I've been watching Steve Young's videos who works with difficult to handle horses. He discourages feeding horses from your hand. His believe is that it makes the horse dominant. Obviously you have experience with these wild horses. I've heard the best horses have some wild Mustang mixed in. It's said that they have more horse sense. It's going to be interesting to see how you get the bridle on her for the first time.
Steve Young works in the UK with horses who have been handled since birth as they do not have wild horses there and every horse is microchipped to show where it came from. Steve Young's advice and this is a general barn rule is because horses that are incredibly comfortable with people and then are fed treats from the hand can learn to expect them and become very pushy and fingers can look a lot like carrots so I've seen really nice lesson horses bite kids when they would never have done that if a person had not been over feeding them with treats. People from riders to owners also don't understand behavioral science so a treat or positive positive reinforcement like food can only happen when you mark a certain wanted behavior. If the horse does a task and you then choose to reward that task w/o the horse being pushy into your space or attempting to go into your pockets then it's safe to reward. I would say 99% of the equine people in the industry don't know when it's OK to treat and when not to and they give treats because the horse is pretty when the horse is actually invading their space and being disrespectful and the person doesn't realise it. The rule of thumb is for people to not treat because so many do it wrong and reinforce bad habits.
I live near the Goshute HMA and drive through it frequently. Do you know when she was gathered or how old she was? I'll start looking through my pictures!
This program was and is a great idea. Its just sad we didn't realize how hard working with them would be .For a spell of time because in truth people didn't work hard enough and in some ways it was a fad,and the results weren't as productive as B. L M wanted, they didn't stop the program, but felt more justified to cull the herds for meat production.Whatvyour are doing has far more potential to help the herds and spark progress in saving them.Don't ever forget that, because this is something we have to get right.
Hi! I love your videos and your horses! i was wondering about the name Nova or Eclipse for her? I think that could be quite fitting 😃 Edit: or maybe Blackbird?
There are really cool names for a beautiful black mare: Black Rose, Interstellar, Ninja, Charcoal, Batgirl, Black Panther, Black Pearl, Storm, BlackBerry, Star, Pepper, November, Night, Thermosa, Arrowheart, Mirror, Raven, Ballerina, BlackSwan, NightQueen, Shadow, etc…
Name suggestion: I like the Shoshoni names...I also like 'Fudge'! She touched...and she knew it...and, she's going to be hard to part with once trained, imho. Good luck!
my favorite thing with new horses and building that trust was just taking naps by the pin and pile of hay......i would go from sitting or napping at the outside of the pin right by the hay pile and the water bucket to leaning up against the water in side the round pin till the point the horse would start sniffing and nudging me after that things were pretty easy even if that stage could take up to a month it led to alot less fights when it came to saddle training because the horse already knew i wasn't trying to hurt it.
My suggestion for a name is "Gypsy" from a 50's movie about a black horse named Gypsy. I think it was called Gypsy come home. It was one of my favorite childhood movies ❣️🤠
Go back and review the mare’s behavior and posture with both the goat (2:12) and the chicken (4:18) and again at (4:50) notice how quickly her reaction, or lack of, changed with the chickens. This mare is a quick learner. It may be advantageous to have her watch how other animals interact with you. I have found clearing chakras each night, and each day engaging with calm but open energy pathways will speed the process in communicating with wild, feral, or abused horses (or animal).
Is the white on her face dried mud or her colour? The markings are pretty cool. I saw some name ideas here is the comments. My horse is named Kodak if you like that for her but I think this video is from some time back so I think you have already named her❤️
Mud and also some scarring. She does have that faded star though❤ And, yes! At this point in the timeline, she didn't have a name (does now). Some people have already guessed it, but I'm loving the name ideas to keep in mind for future mustangs!
RUclips rec'd me your channel this morning, happily subscribed! If you're in the market for some name ideas, I'd toss Raven, Magpie, and Phoebe (There's a species of bird called the Black Phoebe native to the west coast, where she came from!) into the pile (: Can't wait to see how this beautiful lady comes along! Awesome video!!
The next video in the series😊 ruclips.net/video/DU0oVwMTl70/видео.html

That touch definitely counts!
haha! It was some amusing first touches to be sure😂
This is just a suggestion, but I thought the name Mockingjay for her is pretty cool! She is so cute to watch, I am excited to see more progress!

Yes it counts.
Looks like the hooves need management and the bugs ! But, she’s brand new so looking forward to her journey

I think that could be quite fitting 😃
Edit: or maybe Blackbird?
I like Eclipse a lot! I think she's going for bird names though (Sparrow, Jeager, hopefully I spelled that right, and Merlin)
Yeah, i did think that, i also thought of Starling but didnt think it would fit
You've got all kinds of great name ideas!☺
@@Mustangsinfinity yep! I am ☺
That counts 🙂. I enjoy watching your videos. She beautiful ❤️
Be interested to see what breeds she from her long barrel that narrows at the back. You dont see that very often.
There are really cool names for a beautiful black mare: Black Rose, Interstellar, Ninja, Charcoal, Batgirl, Black Panther, Black Pearl, Storm, BlackBerry, Star, Pepper, November, Night, Thermosa, Arrowheart, Mirror, Raven, Ballerina, BlackSwan, NightQueen, Shadow, etc…
She will look beautiful once she fills out!
She’s gorgeous! I love her ! She’s lucky to be with you ! Keep loving her ! I thought of Raven as her name , or maybe lucky star 🌟
God bless! 🙏🏻🥰🎆
I did name her raven😄 it suits her so well!😊
That definitely counts! She is so lovely. I think you should call her Ebony or Beauty 🥰
Name suggestion: I like the Shoshoni names...I also like 'Fudge'! She touched...and she knew it...and, she's going to be hard to part with once trained, imho. Good luck!
I think you mean "wary" of me instead of "weary" of me. Great video.
Rogue chicken!
😂😂
Great work. I almost adopted one of these mustangs.
I would say that counts as a first touch, because technically you did touch her for the first time 🤩
Keep working hard!!
I love your vids and I think black jack or Kylo
.... I thought it was me who spooked her, as I had moved my finger, to give the thumbs up, and she turned away ... LOL 😂 ... 🤔 ... 😳 .....
😂😂😂😂
The way I started with a badly abused mare. 5 years to turn her into a 4 time state champion and 5 time honor roll horse. I'm on her in my avatar
I would name her Hekate or Nyx. Both dark goddesses. And both gorgeous beyond measure ❤️
my favorite thing with new horses and building that trust was just taking naps by the pin and pile of hay......i would go from sitting or napping at the outside of the pin right by the hay pile and the water bucket to leaning up against the water in side the round pin till the point the horse would start sniffing and nudging me after that things were pretty easy even if that stage could take up to a month it led to alot less fights when it came to saddle training because the horse already knew i wasn't trying to hurt it.
New sub...I love the name Nightingale for her 😊
She is so SWEET!
Yes, it counts!
My suggestion for a name is "Gypsy" from a 50's movie about a black horse named Gypsy. I think it was called Gypsy come home. It was one of my favorite childhood movies ❣️🤠
Love it!
I actually named my own horse Gypsy. 🤗 She's a bay, but I loved that movie so much.
How about halo? Or raven or amity shadow? Lily
Your still shows she has a good eye
I love the snorts. Lol
Stellar, for that tiny little star under her dossan.....beautiful.
awww i love and congrats
Definitely a first touch!
She sure is a pretty mare. I do love mares.
What kind of noise is she making?
Is it just the way she eats?
I don't think I've heard that kind of noise before 😃
A touch is a touch. It counts!
RUclips rec'd me your channel this morning, happily subscribed! If you're in the market for some name ideas, I'd toss Raven, Magpie, and Phoebe (There's a species of bird called the Black Phoebe native to the west coast, where she came from!) into the pile (:
Can't wait to see how this beautiful lady comes along! Awesome video!!
yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed! and thank you! ❤
Mustangs are good minded and trainable.most of them.nature actually breeds a better horse than we do.
