@nik00lakisGR It has wires, and is electric, but its not meant to be played for performance. it's a practice violin, therefore it doesn't need the same punch as an EV model.
i don't know much about the sv200, but on the yamaha site sv150: boasts sophistication and revolution sv200: boasts pro sound and little feedback If you would like more effects, get the sv150, if you solely want a brand name electric violin and little feedback, i would lean towards the sv200. Be sure to test them both out at a dealer before you spend more money on such a costly thing finally, i think the SV-150 would be more fun and cost efficient overall, because it comes with the control box.
@roughout it still has strings that vibrate, so yes it actually makes noise. It might be a bit quieter than a violin with a huge mute, but not THAT much. It can still be heard in a different room, assuming the room is rather small. The biggest difference is that without a speaker or headphones, it'll sound bad.
Thanks for kind reply! It does sound like you are satisfied with SV-150 already. I plan to use mainly for silent practices & occasional band play/practice with other friends. Given that none of us are professionals and don't really have/nor care to have state art of equipments, it seems to me that SV-150 would be sufficient for my play. It is little pity that I don't seem to find any local stores nearby that carries SV-150 to rent out where I live. Thanks for suggestions!
@LlamaLlord21 A violin with a "large metal practice mute" is not "pretty quiet". All this is relative to what we are comparing to but the question asked was "can I...play without making a sound outside my ears?" A violin with a practice mute can be heard anywhere with our 4000 sq ft home. Will a silent violin be heard through the door or wall, or by someone in the same room?
@FiddlerAdam thanks for the response the choice of words was a bit harsh but understandable. I just kind of wanted to hear opinions as well. I was not about to drop the money on it without a lot more information. :P
I did my best at reading your message, and here's my best answer: I'm not sure if they sell the violin in brazil, but i think they might, since it's an international company. And for what comes with it: the only thing you'll get with it is the violin, the control box, the book of music, the SD card holding the audio files, and some cheap earphones. hope i helped.
Sorry for the inconvenience. Silent violin is the ... model name of the instrument. So, it's a "Yamaha Silent Violin" not a truly silent violin. With this violin, it's quiet, so you could play it at night without waking anyone else (Assuming you wouldn't sit RIGHT next to the person you're not trying to wake. Even playing in the hallway would be good enough with the door closed.
well, obviously - if you would like a violin that you can play everywhere and be heard, the EV is the one for you. on the other hand, if you want something to practice with anywhere, the SV is the one for you.
I did my best at translating your question, i hope my answer is suitable. I'm not completely sure, but their website says that they operate in Brazil. So you should be able to get one. And for what it comes with: (it all comes in a cardboard box) violin, book of music with SD card that holds the audio files, The control box, and some cheap headphones. no bow is included. I hope i helped.
@Henry92RLC I'd say a heavy practice mute does the job if you only want it quiet, but it's not quieter than the silent violin, unplugged. Mutes also affect different violins differently. My old violin would make more of a "bug-in-your-ear" sound, whereas my new violin is actually quite sonorous, and sustains pitches long after the note is released. TL;DR: It's not MORE quiet, but it's quiet enough.
How silent is it to others when you play with headphones on? is it basically as audible as playing an acoustic with a mute or even quieter? (trying to consider neighbours, roommates during late night sessions). thanks so much for the reply!
Let say we use sv150 and sv200 on stage, but sv150 without control box and both using amp (with/ without same external fx processor). What's +- fr both? Is sv150 comparable with sv200 in this case? Thanks.
Please let me know if you have tried this configuration, and please try also using earphone/speaker directly without control box, because in the begining I won't buy an amp first. Thanks.
@DollwarDevil if a string breaks, put a new one on. in the video it was plugged into an amp. but believe me, if you're looking for something to practice with, this is maybe as quiet as a violin with a sizable mute. It's like a toy since it has the box, which is also very useful, but the EV models are more for performance.
So, SV150 can be use without control box? I have asked someone, he said his control box was spoiled, so he cannot use sv150 with amp (at least with those that he have tried with), what's your opinion? Thanks.
What is like the reference prize for this instrument? I would REALLY like to buy one (but I need to know the price and I haven't been able to find it anywhere).
don't mention it, and just so you know, the effects are a little different sounding than they may sound here. (like "mirror room" - actually has a pounding reverb with the legato sound) i plan to post more videos of the sv-150 i'll take requests for effects and songs. (but i'll start with suzuki).
Anderson Violinista.
So do I. now I'm thinking weather sv150 workable without the control box or no. I don't wan't if later my control box spoiled, I cannot play my sv150. My annother option is buy sv200 and add another tascam mp-gt1 or mp-bt1. I have checked that MP-GT1 have a features that enable us to eliminate guitar sound for play along practice (but not sure for violin) this is another confusion.
Piezo pickups react to the vibrations of the strings sounding. I guess its mounted near the bridge. They are NON magnetic pickups so they don't require the use of strings that are mostly made of magnetic material (steel). The only thing I'm wondering about is how sweet or mellow a tone can the piezo pickups reproduce, but seeing how it's classified as an electronic instrument, maybe all you need is definition and clarity playing in an electro-acoustic ensemble.
Also, when i tested out the sv150 (because I'm getting one soon) - the only effect out of 24 that had feedback was either tube drive or jet (which are essentially the same thing)- another reason.. plus, i just think the box adds more fun!
It is 1/8", but i wouldn't say that's a big problem. I bought a 1/8-1/8 cable for my speakers. But if your speaker input is different, you can buy an adapter at radio shack (or some other store), they can't be that expensive if a 6' cord costs $8.
through my experience, i have not been able to use the sv150 without a control box. maybe there's some kind of warranty, i don't know. but if you don't want to rely on whether or not the control box works, and are willing to give up the box, go for the other models.
I read that you can put a heavy practice mute on an electric violin and it makes even more quiet. I looked all over the Internet and couldn't find much about. Do you know if it makes it more quiet?
hi! thanks for great video. I have a question on SV-150. I am thinking about getting an electric violin, either SV-150 or SV-200. As an amateur who wishes to plays with other musicians (also amateurs playing keyboard, guitar, etc, as well as practicing, of course), how do you feel about SV-150 to SV-200? Main concern I have is whether SV-150 would be able to perform without much issues (noises, etc) when hooked up to an amp. Thanks!
Well, if you play it without the box, it would be quiet. honestly, i only use it to tune occasionally. I prefer it quiet (unless i'm giving a performance). And so yes, you can play it without the box, it would just be quiet. And finally, the AC adapter (not included) connects to the control box. I wish i had one, because the box sure sucks power fast.
@DonnaaPinciotti I suppose that depends on your headphones, but yes they are pretty quiet. Though, now that I am older, i would much rather just have a large metal practice mute. I would be able to play the same violin with the same shoulder rest, chin rest, strings etc. and it would be just as quiet. Sure you get rid of a few bells and whistles, but i think it's worth it.
I am having trouble deciding between the 130/150 is the quality very different between the two? I am just looking for solo silent practice that I can plug headphones into but I am looking for the classic sound so I feel better playing classical pieces.
Is there a different technique you have to use for an electric? do u apply bowing lighter, ect. how close to an acoustic is it? and finally, is it good for performing? not a solo, but rather in a group.
im planning on getting one of these since I've broken 2 acoustic violins in the past year (lol), just a question, do you need to buy an expensive amp, or is the control box enough? (like, outsides of practice, if perhaps you want to perform for friends or something), what would you need?
Eu gostei muito do timbre desse instrumento, eu já tenho alguns violinos elétricos e sempre procuro outras opções que se aproxime do trimbre do violino acústico.
It can be used with an amp, but when I've performed with it with an orchestra accompanying me, and the other soloists either using my sv or the teacher's ev, I thought the ev was a bit louder and had much clearer tone quality.
It's not completely silent. it sounds just like if your regular violin had no body. Just tight strings suspended by a frame of a violin. And yes, if you aren't playing anying marked ffff, i'm sure you could play without waking them. I usually play in a different room than the others in the morning when they are still asleep.
Hiya, I loved the demonstration. I'm looking at learning the violin at home. I live in shared accom and want to avoid nuisance neighbour claims so am looking at using headphones and hooking the violin up to my computer. Would I be better off with an electric violin or an acoustic one with a pick up? Any help you can give is appreciated. Cheers :)
@hgchjk It wouldn't be loud enough to wake a person in the next room. They would probably hear it if they woke up in the middle of the night and were trying to get back to sleep, but no - not wake them. It's about the same, if not quieter than quiet speech.
@xxxMasterPro I wouldn't say it's bad. If you're looking to perform with it, i suggest buying an EV model, as the SV's are meant for practice, and thus they are typically weaker and quieter.
You can play your heart out, just watch out for wires. The volume is really the main difference. Watch this video for group performance (you be the judge) : NYSMF/Yamaha Silent String Quintet
I'm pretty sure it retails at $1295, but that's not a solid price. If you have a burning passion for it, just go to your local music store and ask them if they have one.
Well, if you were in say, a hotel room. You could hear the acoustic almost clearly from the other room, but with the silent, it would be pretty faint. It would sound as loud as people talking quietly.
Well... i'd start out the traditional way, since there are major differences between a violin and the sv150. it is a nice toy to have once you have your skills established, but learning on one might be risky.
@laura195116 No!!! Definitely not! It's considerably lighter than any acoustic i've ever held. Perhaps half or more of the weight of an acoustic is removed.
Pois alguns violinos elétricos que eu já testei ou tem o timbre muito artificial parecendo de um teclado ou é muito estridente com médios muito gritantes.
loving my SV-150
@nik00lakisGR It has wires, and is electric, but its not meant to be played for performance. it's a practice violin, therefore it doesn't need the same punch as an EV model.

im confused , so an electric silent violin cannot be heard without an amp of headphone right??? does it work like that with all electric violins ????
Personally, i haven't tried using the sv150 without the control box. if i use an amp, the sv150 is connected to the box which is connected to the amp.

Thank you very much for the movie!
What do you do if a string breaks or gets too worn out... v_v ? Also, is it plugged into an amp that whole time or was it just the box. o.o?
@DeathlyGust Yup, you just need to get the right cord and possibly adapter.
@DollwarDevil if a string breaks, put a new one on. in the video it was plugged into an amp. but believe me, if you're looking for something to practice with, this is maybe as quiet as a violin with a sizable mute. The 150 is the only one that comes with the box, and it's not sold seperately. so honestly, i have no idea whether or not the others are connectable.
what is the main purpose for having having the SD slot? and does the Yamaha SV-255 model have that capability?
So, SV150 can be use without control box? I have asked someone, he said his control box was spoiled, so he cannot use sv150 with amp (at least with those that he have tried with), what's your opinion?

Is it very loud without any speaker or headphones?
Thank you a lot! This was very helpful. Greetings from Germany
@Vlessgorian "it retails for $1295, but at my store it's only around $900 because they discount it." as said by me... a long time ago

@tewordt That would be "Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity" from Holst's "The Planets"
hi! thanks for great video. I have a question on SV-150. I am thinking about getting an electric violin, either SV-150 or SV-200. I am having trouble deciding between the 130/150 is the quality very different between the two? I am just looking for solo silent practice that I can plug headphones into but I am looking for the classic sound so I feel better playing classical pieces.
SV-130
Yes.
I have used gut strings on my electric violin. It sounds really nice.
Is there a different technique you have to use for an electric? do u apply bowing lighter, ect.
how close to an acoustic is it?
and finally, is it good for performing? not a solo, but rather in a group.
Does anyone know the name of the practice track he was playing?
im planning on getting one of these since I've broken 2 acoustic violins in the past year (lol), just a question, do you need to buy an expensive amp, or is the control box enough? (like, outsides of practice, if perhaps you want to perform for friends or something), what would you need?
Eu gostei muito do timbre desse instrumento, eu já tenho alguns violinos elétricos e sempre procuro outras opções que se aproxime do trimbre do violino acústico.
I found the same problem with all the cables. What is the make of that little speaker that the control box is plugged into ? Good sound !
Preamp? I don't know. The box has three places to plug in a jack: Violin, headphones, and output.
That's the best i got.
without the control box, the only differences i can think of would be the physical ones. Otherwise it's the box that sets them apart.
Which strings? Like what type of strings? Well, i would assume that any strings will work with it.
It can be used with an amp, but when I've performed with it with an orchestra accompanying me, and the other soloists either using my sv or the teacher's ev, I thought the ev was a bit louder and had much clearer tone quality.
i really doubt it. i'm pretty sure the sv-150 models are the only one's with the box. I don't think any EVs or other SVs have the effects.
I suppose i could post one, but i won't be able to for a while.
@laura195116 It's part of the frame...
It's not completely silent. it sounds just like if your regular violin had no body. Just tight strings suspended by a frame of a violin. wow this is power
Is it possible to purchase the tuner/FX box separately?
Gustav Holst's "Jupiter: Bringer of Jollity" from "The Planets Suite"
i honestly have no idea. but if they are the same price, i'd recommend you get the 150k so you can share the difference.
That is the very famous theme of "Jupiter: the bringer of jollity" from Gustav Holst's "The Planets'

it retails for $1295 - as of my comment 9 months ago. It should be around that ballpark.

@laura195116 No!!! Definitely not! It's considerably lighter than any acoustic i've ever held. Perhaps half or more of the weight of an acoustic is removed.
I guess i could. I haven't got around to making a comparison video yet. And i have to choose a song.
@yamenhawit I'd say definitely start with an acoustic.
Honestly, i have not researched this at all. You'd have to ask someone at a local music store.
@laughdude9 only if you have an amp.

Well, you CAN play the violin without those, but it would be really quiet.
