Easy Sourdough Sandwich Loaf for Beginners: Soft & Sliceable!

  • Sourdough doesn't have to be complicated or wasteful! This sourdough sandwich loaf has been my go-to sandwich bread to make at home. This recipe has never failed me and tends to (happily) disappear very quickly!
    RECIPE: (I double this in the video so keep that in mind, this is the recipe for a single loaf):
    65g bubbly active starter
    300g warm water or milk (non chlorinated water)
    1Tbsp Sugar
    1Tbsp Oil or butter
    400g Bread Flour
    100g Whole Wheat Flour
    (I have done all 500g with just bread flour with success, a softer more delicate loaf.)
    1.5tsp salt
    Mix together until just combined and let stand for 30 min to an hour in a bowl covered with a damp towel. Knead dough to smooth texture after the flours have re-hydrated and let stand 8-10 hours before flattening into a rectangle and rolling into a loaf. Let rise in lightly greased loaf pan (you may choose to use parchment if sticking is a concern) for 1-2 hours. Bake at 375 degrees 40-45 min until golden. Let rest in the pan outside of the oven for 10 min before unmolding. Allow to cool completely (if you can, keeps the bread more stable for thinner slices) before slicing. Store in a plastic ziplock (once fully cooled) for up to 3 days. Best toasted beyond the first day.
