- I got my 16 year-old hands on a copy of Garbage's Version 2.0 back in 1998, and that CD was put on heavy rotation on my Discman everywhere I went.
The edgy and cutting edge arrangements together with Shirley Manson's sultry croon just connected with me during a time when I was going through a lot of adolescent emotional turmoil.
'The Trick Is To Keep Breathing' was a haunting track that accompanied many lonely bus rides and late night walks, and Daniel Shulman's bassline really melodically supported the whole arrangement with its laid back feel and dark drone.
Shulman was often seen playing a Musicman Stingray in many pictures, so I believe this song was recorded on a Drop-D tuned one. I don't have a Musicman Stingray in my collection, so I've brought out the DGCF tuned Frankenbass and soloed the Dimarzio Split P in the middle position to try and cop a similar tone and vibe.
Equipment used:
Bass:
Early '90s Fender Japan Silver Series Jazz Bass body (Alder)
Warmoth wenge neck with brazilian rosewood fingerboard
Dimarzio Model J
Dimarzio Split P (soloed)
0.047uf tone capacitor (rolled off 90%)
Leo Quan Badass II bridge
Hipshot Bass Xtender
Fender Fat Finger
Stringjoy custom gauge strings (0.050 to 0.120)
Audio:
Zoom B3 used as audio interface
Aguilar amp sim with Fender Bassman 4x12 cabinet sim
D Comp compressor patch
Edited in Reaper (low shelf added to beef up tone to better match the mix of the original studio recording)
Video:
iPhone 7
Edited in Davinci Resolve 16
You do a great job!! It's nice to see someone who loves this entire song where base is lead
I love this bassline, 2.0 has such good basslines.
Yes, it did! However, I somehow also still often find myself going back to listen to their debut album as well...so many gems in that one too.
@@IsaacTanBass Agreed, also very good, maybe better as a whole.
Nice work. You should be proud of the practice you put in
Muy bueno!!! Saludos desde Salta-Argentina 👏👏
Very nice sound.
Nailed it! Great choice!
Good job dude, actually really want to hear this on a fretless as i think it would sound twice as awesome
Ah....unfortunately, I no longer have a fretless bass in my rotation...
Beautiful cover my friend. This song also connects with me.
Thanks! Means a lot to me, since I tend to only cover less popular songs
@@IsaacTanBass no problem. This cover means a lot to me.
@@mattildahubbardo this song also got me through some tough times
Isaac Tan me to
Im back here again still love your video
Are those tabs listed somewhere?
I'm sure they are, but I can't read or write tabs and notation, so I learned by ear.
@@IsaacTanBass thanks for replying. I did find them on one website, but slightly different version. Good job on this one.
@@theelephant2887 mine will look entirely different, because I'm playing in DGCF tuning with this particular bass
@@IsaacTanBass I was actually wondering if you were using standard tuning since you are playing higher on the neck. That makes sense. Thanks.
@@theelephant2887please say you remember what website it was i need it
