Thanks to you Heir, Ive been playing allot of people that said they came back to the came because of the hype. Rome 2 is a great game and it is a genuine pleasure to share my replays. I am moving to a new city and wont be able to play for sometime, therefor I sent Heir a bunch of replays if he is in need of content. Thanks to everyone that took time to write a kind word
interesting game as always! I'm pretty sure you would win if you used that last citizen cav sooner. Without Blearic slingers the outcome could be so much different.
I feel like towards the end of his time amongst us... he was pretty fed up with CA. The last few videos I watched of him, he sounded pretty tired. Hopefully hes doing better now wherever he is.
Sparta's history is very interesting. They were indeed good for a short period of time and won pretty impressive victories, but then the other hellenic states caught up and surpassed them, and they resorted to playing up the propoganda of themselves and basically coasted on that. They ended up getting trashed later on, as their society was pretty bad at replenishing manpower and they did lag behind. Their best units should represent their peak, and worst their downfall/worse.
I was doing some reading about ancient Greece from Alexander to the end of Macedon and I counted the battles between Macedon and Sparta. The results? Macedonia 3 wins in major battles, Sparta 0 wins in major battles !!! Alexander contemptuously referred to the battle between the Macedonians he'd left behind vs the Spartans in revolt as 'a battle of mice', that's how he viewed Sparta. Sparta had diminished into a pretty insignificant power at the time period of this game after their defeats to Thebes, the game kind of reflects this.
Thank you Sol. Always enjoyed watching your replays you seem to find ways to fight others don't think about till it is too late. Tough loss this times but still an enjoyable battle. Much appreciated.
Morning Heir ... Amazing matchup! A big thank you to Sol for sending these in. deciding factor in this was I think the Balearic Slingers. One of my favourite units :)
I feel like we are having a little Rome 2 renaissance. Its good to return to the classics. I'm even down for some Shogun 2 replays. Regardless, Thank You both Heir and Sol Invictus for rekindling my love for the classics. Tired of goblins and daemons! I need my hoplites and oathsworns!
Yeah, thanks, Heir... I stopped watching your channel for a few years because it went all Warhammer, but now that you're back in Rome 2, so am I on your channel :-)
I am definitely more in the "don't make Sparta too op just because of popular culture" camp but they do need to be stronger than they are to be honest. I always wanted them to give them their historical non spartan units. The game has the helots, the Perioikoi, and Spartiate but at its height Sparta had other subject peoples, mostly other Greeks from Laconia and Arcadia. The most famous of these being the light infantry from the border hills with Arcadia, the Skiritai. There was a whole system for sons of helots to undergo the agoge and become full Spartan citizens that could be a unit. Same with the Trophimoi, who were foreigners that were not full citizens but basically came to Sparta to study the ways of war. Some of those men eventually completed the agoge and became full citizens but I think most when back home. You could still make a unit with them. TLDR my point being there were a bunch more "historical" units for them to give Sparta that would be just as realistic as any other of the loosely historical stuff in Rome 2.
Busy work week this week Heir - however, I’ll get some good replays sent to you courtesy of the SPQR Imperators this weekend. Have a great rest of your week!
Sparta's units seem "weak" because you are considering them at their peak against their contemporaries but by the timeline of Rome 2, military and metalurgic technology has made a lot of progress. They are basically an incredibly well done execution of tech that is a "generation" old. A flawed but still useful analysis would be a comparison between a highly drilled/skilled arbalest vs early hand cannons.
Are you open to others submitting replays? I'm newer but have run into a few interesting battles I'd love to see reviewed and critiqued. Actually made a pike army work aggressively in a 2v2 tonight! Either way thanks for still making these videos, they're actually what made me start playing Total War and I always enjoy seeing this game in particular.
The problem with sparta in this game is that their spears get outtraded by sword units and they dont get the great heavy shock cav most greek factions get to fight those swords so a clever opponent with the right faction just takes as many sword units as allowed,
in real life sparta lossed just as many wars as they won yes they were elite but just to low in numbers it also took many years to become a elite if you even survived the training i'm not sure but i think they are around 35 when they completed the training
Spartans were experts with spear and sword, they would keep wielding their spears until those either broke or there wasn't enough space to fight with them theoretically they should have the ability to throw their spears, and being a heavy spear it would do heavy damage, and fight as a heavy sword infantry, particularly when you have to chase enemies
Dunno if the problem was with Sparta or infact hoplities in this game. They hold for a long time but thats it. Always felt like they had no stopping power. Would have been good if they could have been balanced better.
The main reason I miss the Rome 2 MP battles is that I could actually see what was going on. There is too much magic in warhammer that relies on faction-specific game knowledge to even tell what damages what if you're not familiar with the game. The fact that every channel has pivoted purely to warhammer these days is kind of sad
I have yet to ever do a battle I wonder if I did so if I ran all Illyrian Hoplites elits my favort faction in the whole game in the grand campain I can get them up to 145 or more amour. and the other hoplites with 105 amour just have to ask dose Illyrian faction have any chance to be a top faction. in mutplayer. or is just trash I have seen u beat Geti in 1 of your vidows. I Gave up on spart for Illyrian Hoplites thinking this was a great move... but I am about to go back to spart if u guys think Illyrian Hoplites elit is a trash faction???? also thanx to Heir of carthage I like waching the vidows and paying the whole time for spart to win :( u toldy played me also can you play more battles with Illyrian Hoplites factions I need the hope.. I might just play that faction and take it any how. I kind person what would lose 100 games in a row playing Illyrian just becuse I love Illyrian Hoplites with highest amour. around. Illyrian is my favort faction.. bye far.. end is sparta.. 3rd is Selud. in grand campain. I aways felt its more powerfull then rome justl like u sayed in 1 of your vidows also. open to feed back thanx to all
Sparta was also part of the PRE ORDER DLC along with the rest of the Hellenic City States, OOOF. If my memory serves i think Sparta even has Spartan Pikemen, but yeah their just "better hoplites" and thats ABOUT it. Rome 2 definitely is "Classic" despite all the crap it got, well deserved crap. Personally holding out for a GOOD gunpowder game, maybe a Victorian Era.

@@buffdude4281 let's goooooooo! I'm trying to rope as many players from my mainly warhammer clan into Rome 2 as well
Thank you Sol!
Ahhhh man, I miss Maximus and his breakdowns. Truly a master in game sense.

Love these videos. I look forward to watching them every day. :)
loving all the historical content lately
Heir I have been subscribed to you for about 6 years now, I am so grateful you are presenting mp Rome 2 battles again. Thank you, and sol invictus!
Thank you Sol. Always enjoyed watching your replays you seem to find ways to fight others don't think about till it is too late. Tough loss this times but still an enjoyable battle. Much appreciated.
Thank you Sol and Heir for these excellent battle replys
Love this! After ten years I can still go on RUclips and see new uploads of great Rome II battles. Keep up the good work!
Thanks solon, rome 2 still is amazing. I love it. I can't wait to see the next historical title.
Big thanks to you Sol! And Heir as well for putting it up. Love this content
Thanks to both you and Sol, the content surge is making me want to get back into the game honestly

Would love to see some fleshed out Greek city states, rise of Thebes and such. Is the Greek campaign in Rome II worth trying?
ooo one minute ago! Thanks for the content man!
The historical content is a nice change up from all the fantasy. I like WHTW3 but the variety is awesome. Thanks Heir!
It was a great battle. Sol smashed me in a battle before this one. It was a great time playing against such a fantastic player.
I've been enjoying the Rome 2 stuff. The campaign just got samey after a while, but I did like the skirmishes.
Thank you Sol Invictus!!

Sparta has 800 years at least of military excellence “they proved it on the battlefield a few times”
Spartans were experts with spear and sword, they would keep wielding their spears until those either broke or there wasn't enough space to fight with them
theoretically they should have the ability to throw their spears, and being a heavy spear it would do heavy damage, and fight as a heavy sword infantry, particularly when you have to chase enemies

Thank you Sol Invictus. TW fans are dying for a new historical title long overdue.
Sol didn't put his hpolites in a phalanx once. That seems like he seriously nerfed himself.
Unfortunately phalanx are broken in this patch, used to be good but no longer
@@Sol_Invictus- Really?? What's wrong with them?

Nice
The Spartan Hoplite aren't amazing, reason being? They don't have 30 weapon damage spears which come with more armor penetration.
Like Sphacteria all over again.
🔥🔥♠️
I'd definitely like to see more of this. Can't get into the warhammer stuff, imo it all went downhill after rome 2
The spartans beginning was a mess
I like that Sparta only gets a limited number of the Heroes of Sparta but its super annoying in the campaign.
w rome2
ymmv but i think hoplites suck in this game
Ahhh two of the trash factions in Rome 2…non barbarians are great
i recently pulled my friend into rome 2. having fun with campaigns
yeah Sparta needs a buff
