One of Haydn's early symphonies that should get more airing. The cello solo work alone would justify it. The composer often wrote extensive solos in his earlier symphonies, wishing to show off the ensemble's individual musicians to his patron. Movement two is almost a mini-concerto, evoking Haydn's two full concertos for that instrument. While not a guest performer, an orchestra's principal cellist would have every right to ask for bonus pay. And that's just one movement. The whole symphony is a joy to hear.

I think the penny has finally dropped for me (with Haydn)

Freundliche Grüße an Mozart-Liebhaber!

Comparing Mozart and Haydn is as pointless as comparing red and blue.

Splendida esecuzione!!!
