I used to drive a step van, and I have a few other cons I can think of for the step van: Steps, instead of just the ease of getting in and out of a van without any steps involved. Quite a few times especially in rainy and snowy weather, I slipped trying to get in or out of the step van, or I tripped on the steps and hit my shin, boy did that hurt. Lack of a rear view mirror, sometimes you just like to use your rear view mirror to see the cars or traffic directly behind you. Blind spots, being there are no side windows, there are some blind spots which make it hard to see. Depending on what engine you have, the ride is rough and bumpy and the engine is noisy, I had a diesel step van, the engine has loud and from time to time black smoke came out of the exhaust. Also, I didn't find the seat and seating position as comfortable in a stepvan compared to the cargo van. Turning radius, step vans can't make a quick u-turn like the cargo vans can. Lastly in my opinion, I think they are slower compared to the stepvan as far as acceleration goes. But as for pro's, I do love the higher ride height, you get a better more commanding view of the road, you feel like you are king of the road, more space, more room to work, more room to organize and layout packages, all the head room you can ask for, you can actually stand up and drive if you wanted to. But I am sorry, even having all of those air vents, and fans, in the summer I was still hot and sweating even cruising 50mph down the road, I need A/C or I can't concentrate on working.

lol when i was getting paid $160 a day for doing 240 stops 300+ packages. that’s when the routes were really hard. guys were happy to have any route less than 200 stops. drivers now 130 stops they crying. lol back in the day our trainees get 100 stop training route. so to compare before and now it’s hell a worth it. pay got better and route got smaller.
Dude try a semi on small streets
I know where your station is lol I worked there for almost a year. In the beginning of the video where your parked; that’s where I use to park my car because parking was always full with vans lol
🤫 lol 😂
I drive a lifted Silverado 1500. My turning radius is below average. I’m about to start working for a DSP soon. Is there a difference from a lifted pickup truck to a step van? Been driving trucks all my life. So I’m curious.
I’m currently in an Amazon warehouse but I’ve always wanted to be a driver but I’m not sure if it’ll be the same as something like doordash, I have about 300 deliveries on there so hopefully that little bit of experience is good enough
You don't need experience.
Lol they don't care about experience. They barely train you, they see if you sink or swim. That's why so many of us drivers watch these videos. I learn so much more from RUclips, than those stupid videos they made us watch.
Sprinter van is no more soon for some dsp. they replacing with step van for some stations..
Over here is 22 for step van , I am driving sprinter van for few months, then take step van training most likely in summer.
Wow I didn’t know that but I know that if you drive them you’ll like them better then the sprinter vans. I know I do
@@wize9762 electric van rolling out too soon , are you in California, they spotted one In Los Angeles , making deliveries.
Wonder if that dot too , lol because it have sliding doors
@@Matthewxie5505 yea I seen it it’s by the company that’s making electric trucks they have like a transformer looking symbol I’m not sure the name they look cool tho I would love to get a chance to drive it.
@Matthew We have some of the Tesla step vans at our DDA.
@@Matthewxie5505 the doors got nothing to do with DOT it’s the weight of the vehicle basically 10,000lbs -26000lbs medical card required and anything above that will be a Class A or B license.
Don't let it get too crazy I hope your number of stops or whatever increased
Does Amazon offer overtime? Or would I be able to work more towards 6 days a week? I used to work for FedEx ground and am used to the workload would just like to know if they give as much hours.
Great question so this all depends on the DSP you choose to work for. My DSP offers 10 hour shifts 5 days a week but some DSPs only offer 8 hours or less.
Were the boxes heavy at fedex ground
@@Bhullarsaab92 yes sir!
I dont believe a lot of you guys when you say you have to deliver 300 packages and have like 180 stops. I get about 9 to 11 totes and deliver about 190 packages. I get it done 4 hours early but thats because im running to every stop. Doing that all day is crazy. Especially when its only 1 to 2 packages per stop
What state do you work in? I use to do Sprinters in San Antonio, and I would go out with 150 to 200 residential.
How would you guys compare this job to warehouse order picking jobs? I’m trying to kind of get away from those order selector jobs and do something a lil less physical
Much better than warehouse jobs, less hard on the body and more freedom
Dam thats it? If that was a stepvan from fedex you would have a bunch of large 70lbs plus packages all over in that asle lol
Watching youtube videos wondering if I should show up to my ride along tomorrow because I tested in the sprinter van but found out from my DSP I'm driving the step vans and am only getting paid $16.50 which is a dollar more than what I made at my warehouse job lmao
How much was the raise going into a step van? I saw a couple other videos that said it’s like a 3-4$ increase. Our dsp in Nevada is set to get these in a few months
Well since my DSP is new he is only offering a $1-2 raise but I’ve seen that other DSP’s start you off at $18 and some even give you $19
@@wize9762 yeah my DSP has been here since November so only a few months. Hopefully the more the better! Ty
@@wize9762 my dsp is gonna give me 19.25 an hour you think it's worth it
I’m getting paid 20
Do step van drivers start before the sprint vans?
I wanna drive a step van cause I'm so damn tired of the door and sliding doors on the fords.
It’ll be the best decision you make you also have allot more room
@@wize9762 I asked my asst manager what I needed to do. So tmrw imma do the training module and get certified.
Recently I did a route with apartments I absolute dread. Took me about 6 hours to complete. My last 2 hours were down to houses. Not really a safe area. So I decided to keep the sliding door open. Violations be damned. and it opened my eyes how flawed the delivery vans are. It's SO much easier to keep the slider open, jump in and out and just get going. I think I broke my record and did 47 houses in an hour. I hate using the door now.
So that's why i want to step up to the step vans. It just makes more sense. Even if my routes will be heavier.
I just got offered this position. From what it sounds, it’s not worth it, I get 200 stops 350 packages daily. This seems too slow, I finish around 5 30 and get paid for 10 hours, definitely not doing it
Sorry to hear bro but Different DSP give you different amount of packages my DSP gives me 120-170 stops with 220-300 packages I usually finish early and get to go home and I get paid for 10 hours. It’s definitely not something I plan to do forever but it’s cool for right now I hope you find something that works out for you tho ✌🏽
More room = better organization = way faster.
Also do u have a to take a physical at the DMV to start driving the Step van?
No they just make you take a medical exam which is not a drug test even though they make you pee in a cup. It’s fast and simple your DSP should tell you where to get one
@@wize9762ok preciate the good word & info bro! 💯
Oh and I had a question, do you also get paid for the full 10 hour shift even if it only takes you 6 hours to finish? Or does that vary by dsp?
@@freebeezy7443 It depends on DSP. But mines pays 10 hours no matter what time you finish. But usually if you finish early they’ll send you to help other drivers.
@@freebeezy7443 Great question nothing wrong with a little devils lettuce lmao 🤣 The medical exam is only to check that you ain’t going to die of a heart attack on the job. They do make you pee in a cup but it’s only to test the water you have not a drug screening. Your solid bro. Good luck 👍🏽
How can you drive slowly in these vans when you have 160 stops with 330 packages 👀❓🤷🏼♂️ And you have only 9 hours to deliver. Amazon wants you to deliver every package. So why not speed up and get it done on time.
Well with the new ai cameras speeding is impossible lol
39 stops? I’ll finish that in 1.5 hrs. I’m in Seattle doing 150 stop on a light day!
They were all apartments and it was 230 packages so it took me about 3 hours to finish
The speed bumps suck in these!
can anyone apply for step van for as long as you got a clean driving record? or do you have to have experience as a regular delivery driver to upgrade?
Can you do a video of how to start the step van
I herd rumors that its harder for a dsp to let you go cause you drive step vans, is that true? I was thinking about applying and then working my way to step van for the experience and the extra job security would be a pro for me.
get a cup of water dip your finger in the water if the water doesn’t fill up the space where your finger went in then the rumors would be correct.
Do U guys do pick ups ?
Do they give good hours for box van drivers ?
Dude . Get a job at ups, you’ll do the same job with way better pay and benefits.
But don’t you guys do pick ups too? We don’t do pick ups yet unless it’s on our itinerary
@@wize9762 i mean it’s more work but you make top pay in 4 years which is $40 and a 100k salary because of required OT. And a pension and benefits.
What lol. I need the AC. We have a 1-2hour drive to and back.
Is the step van easier on the knees? Getting out?
Nope I’ve noticed my knee hurting more then usual but I think it’s because I sometimes jump out the van instead of stepping out like a normal person lol 😂
FYI it’s illegal to have both headphones on .
Oh shit I didn’t know that thanks 🙏
@@wize9762 Hey nice vid. I drive for ups man. Invest in a nice bluetooth speaker and spare battery banks. There's some great speakers for $70 that can sit in the front of your truck between the panel and your front mirror.
Are you in the same truck everyday?
Yup the same one for the 5 days I work. It changes when I come back from the break but sometimes it stays the same.
dang, I am sorry that you only make $16/hr. in a step van, DOT drivers at my DSP make $20/hr.
The least amount of stops i had one day was 3 LOL that was the easiest day ever. Just 3 big overflow boxes 🤣
That’s the type of route I dream about getting but never do lol 😂
Man in Texas we’ve been getting 350-380 packs on average all week. 190 stops and like 60 overflow. It’s fucking ridiculous

They have Heat but no AC
im still in tha bed at 630 and I drive for fedex lmao
Con ! The step van is shakey . I think they need to put more weight inside them ..
Do yu have to have your cdl
Great question no you don't you just need to pass a physical and get a medical certificate which Amazon pays for also the physical is not a drug test even though they take a pee sample.
boutta start my training for dot
I stay in l.a they pay 18.50 50 hours 5 days weekly pay 967-981
Is it more pay?
16 Bucks for any driver role should be criminal, I did the DSP thing for a while and got 20 dollars an hour for a regular van the step vans were getting 22.50 and they were not responsible for tickets they turn them into the DSP and the DSP covers them.
