    Just everything about the process, the lengths you go to in order to frame these works of art, its all quite mesmerising. The video itself, as with all your others, was so relaxing and informative, it really doesn't get better than that so thanks😁 have an awesome day too!!

    this is a really informative video. Thank you for your generosity in sharing. I have not been making frames, instead mounting my watercolours onto cradled birch ply panels. The way I learned was to use cold wax on the surface of the watercolour first, allow to dry for a few days and then spray with the finish. I see you just use the spray. For some reason I thought the spray may have made the watercolour smudge, but obviously not. I think I will try this and remove the step of the cold wax (which btw, smudges any colour pencil I sometimes use wen I make mixed-media pieces). Thanks again Tim!

      @TimSchofieldArt  Год назад +1

      Hey @ThePattiw 🙂 I've used a mineral wax as well in the past and although I quite liked the finish it didn't work for me because it stripped back some of the white paint I use, so I can relate. I've never seen Golden Archival interefere with my paintings; another concern that people sometimes have is that it will cause some yellowing, but I've never had a problem like that. Only positive things to say about it!

    I am not a watercolorist, preferring to work in oils or egg tempera - but how you seal the watercolor and display it without glass is simply gorgeous. I love watercolors (even if I find them so very difficult to do) and the glass has always been a big turn-off for me, I find it too distracting from the work. Your framing lets the viewer focus on your beautiful art unimpeded. Great job!

    • @TimSchofieldArt
      @TimSchofieldArt  Год назад

      Thank you, Cynthia. 🙂 I have the same feeling about the glass. It makes sense to use from a practical perspective, but I think this method marries enough benefits from both sides to make it worthwhile doing, I'm glad you agree! 😄

      @@TimSchofieldArt The new UV non-reflective glass types are so good it looks like there is nothing between the viewer and the work. I used to hate the UV glass because I felt it deadened the colour, and in my embroidered works, killed the sheen of the silk fabric and threads, a quality I use intentionally in my work. I recently had some embroidered works framed behind UV glass and it honestly looked like there was nothing overlying the work.

    • @TimSchofieldArt
      @TimSchofieldArt  Год назад

      @@bluewren65 That's awesome! I don't have very much experience with the non-reflective glass. I checked it out a few times at a framer I used to use, but I only saw a couple of versions. I'm glad you've found something that works well for you! 😄

    • @bluewren65

      @@TimSchofieldArt There's all kinds of ways to display your work and you just need to find a way that works for you. I love how you are framing your works. I work more with gouache than watercolour and I think your approach would be too dangerous for that (you can just see a collector accidentally spilling something on a gouache painting and watching the whole thing melt before their eyes 😯). When the framer first suggested the UV glass I was "no, NO!" but then he explained that it has really changed over the last decade. I couldn't be happier. It's also particularly good for pigments that are less light fast as it is the UV rays that cause the degradation.

    I am glad to have found your page. I have been mounting my watercolours to boards for a long time, though I seal with cold wax, I have asthma and I am also afraid I would mess the spraying up,. I buy frames and mount the paintings myself, but you have inspired me to try making my own. I am looking forward to looking at the rest of your channel.

      That's great to hear, Lesley! The sealant sprays are definitely not something you want to breathe in. If there was an alternative I could use, I'd prefer to avoid them as well. I spray outdoors and I use a decent mask, but the beard inevitably means it's not perfect so I try to hold my breath as well haha. I've tried wax and I see how it could be great, but sadly it activates some paints that I use at times, so it wasn't something I could stick with personally. I hope your frame making goes great! I've changed things up a little since this video by gluing the pieces of wood into a moulding before making any 45 degree cuts. That way it's not necessary to make the outside of the frame and the inside in 2 separate steps, and it removes almost half of the cuts needed so saves a lot of time. 😃

    • @TimSchofieldArt
      @TimSchofieldArt  10 месяцев назад +2

      No problems with yellowing. 🙂 As far as I can tell from my research, it really comes down to the kind of varnish used. There are ones out there which can discolour, and I've avoided them. I have a few test pieces from when I first started, so I can keep an eye on them over time in different conditions and they look the same as on day 1. 😃

    Interesting technique. However, when I used to own a small gallery in South Africa yonks ago, I was 'told' that mounting a watercolour immediately loses its value. Museums and 'real' galleries did not accept a mounted unglazed watercolour... Perhaps times have changed since I closed my gallery in 1998/99. My personal opinion is: bravo for finding a way to frame watercolours without glass!

    • @TimSchofieldArt
      @TimSchofieldArt  Год назад +2

      Hi Maria. 🙂 Thank you for your input - I think that the perspective you were told might still shared by some, and I would probably even expand it to other things as well, such as signing a watercolour in another medium like pencil. Since I use mixed media already in these paintings, I don't worry too much about appealing to a 'pure' watercolour audience that I think also comes with the expectation that the paintings are presented in a more traditional way. I think that will inevitably alienate some number of people, but I'm okay with that personally. I enjoy pushing things in new directions and trying out different things. In terms of value, I've sold paintings framed in this manner through two galleries so far, at higher rates than traditionally framed pieces due to the additional work that goes into them. I don't have enough data on it to come to a definitive conclusion one way or another, but I would say that I haven't run into any obvious problems when it comes to decreasing value of a piece so it might have changed a bit with time. 🙂 The glassless aspect is definitely a bonus; you can get so much closer to the detail in a piece when viewing in-person, and no reflections on the surface is always nice too!
