      Nice work, I've been a fan of your vids almost since you started, but Melbourne (and Point Nepean) are in south eastern Australia, NOT south western as you have in the notes. As a Melbourne resident writing on a rainy day with a top temperature of 10 degrees I have to thank you for describing our city as "sunny", perhaps that will help refute Melbourne's image as a cold, wet place.. ;)

    Living in Melbourne, I went to the fort when briefly in the area on holiday a couple years ago. It was quite a walk, as the trail leading to the old fort is only even taken by paid busses or walking. With almost no shelter and a rediculously large amount of flies. I quite enjoyed the fort, learning about what went where and so on. I even saw an Echina walking around in the bushes by the trail on our way back.
    There’s actually also a point along the trail where, in 1968, Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared when swimming off the coast in rough conditions, his body was never recovered and he was declared dead ‘in absentia’

    Considering the "The Second World War" started with a surprise attack on Poland by Nazi Germany, Nepean's claim of "first shot of the war" is easily debunkable.
    The most definitive claim for the first.... was the KMS Schleswig-Holstein, an old german battleship that was docked in Polish-controled Danzig the night before and opened fire on Polish gun batteries at 4 a.m. on September 1st, the day the invasion began.

    Fun fact: although fort nepean is the most well known, there are actually several other abandoned forts in the area. Out of the 3 on the peninsula however, 2 are in the point nepean national park, while the third currently is located in a campsite just 1 kilometre east of the park entrance. Theres also 2-3 other forts outside the peninsula, with only 1 of them actually being used by the military to the present day (swan island). Theres also noticeable other structures in the bay entrance including the southern channel pile light, chinamans hat (a decommissioned structure named for the shape of its roof) and popes eye, which was going to be yet another fort but the idea was abandoned due to the government believing that they already had enough forts, leaving only the outline of the island that was supposed to be the fort actually being built

    My grandfather used to work there so I was there quite often. I used to love going through the tunnels in the area, unfortunately most have been closed off now with just a few left for tourists. Occasionally live shells get found there too so it pays to stick to the tracks. From the sounds of it, it will also be opened for overnight camping soon too.

    Actually the ABC reported that the German Captain wanted to still escape, to do that you would have to go through an area called the heads, it is claimed a lot of vessels in the past so and it requires a pilot man to navigate the small area that's deep enough, and when he's on he outranks the captain, he issued the return to port

    This fort sounds just about as agressive as that island with an indigenous tribe on, somewhere on Earth. I remeber a story of a major Earthquake having hit the area and the government nearby the island send out a helicopter to check if they were okay. They quickly found out that they were, after multiple arrows were fired at the helicopter.

    I wouldn't consider it at all. Infact if we are talking about earlier wars that became part of the Second World War. I would consider the Second Sino-Japanese war. Which is another argument since no one can decide whether is it 1931 or 1937 that it started. WOULD be cool if you did a episode on the war.

    • @PlainlyDifficult
      @PlainlyDifficult  7 лет назад

    At least you have at least something thought about WW1.Here,it's just common knowledge that the Americans,British,France,Germany,Russia,Ottoman & Austria-Hunagry were in it & many people question why was it called a "World War" due to that common knowledge.We were barely thought or mention WW1 due to all the spotlight only pointing at the Japanese Occupation in WW2 mostly because we were just a British Colony & not yet really on the road of independence(even though there was 1 skirmish fought here from one of my favourite WW1 German Navy story (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Penang ).If it was mentioned,it would simply be like 1/2 lines from the text books & some side notes from the teachers.It's a shame too since after learning more from graphic books,strategy games,a certain RUclips channel & BF1,it is even more interesting than the typical story of "European powers fighting in a trench stalemate all across the Western Front using bolt action rifles,artillery,gas,grenades,MG & early tanks for 4 years while experiencing the suffering,boredom & painful lifestyle in the trenches"

    I'm one of the people who believe WW2 truly started with the Sino-Japan war and the Manchurian conflict (as it was continuous fighting of 2 major war powers).
    In my experience most Europeans believe it's the invasion of Poland (which, fair enough, but is after the Manchurian Incident) or The German Annexations (no real combat)
    some Ultra nationalists Germans believe it was the Occupation of the Ruhr as it was an "act of aggression".
    And some Americans believe it was the Raid on Pearl Harbor (because it marks the entry of the final major nation...somehow).

    Instead of Gallipoli, here in Canada they taught us about Neuve Chapelle, Ypres, Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Passchandaele. This sounds more interesting.

    • @callumjoyce1712
      @callumjoyce1712 5 лет назад

      in Australia we're taught about Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux for the same reason Canadians are taught about battles like Vimy Ridge, both our nations were quite young at the time and these battles are seen as showing the world that we weren't just colonial outposts anymore and that we could hold our own!
